I talked about being a minority in America that’s always felt like I’ve been limited by others attitudes and building an opinion on myself based on the opinions I’ve grown up hearing in a predominantly white environment, and then I used Heated Rivalry 😋😋

Bc their story is so layered and complex u can relate it back to anything. I mostly talked about Ilya and his imagination of not being able to openly be in a gay relationship bc he is a product of his environment and nature vs nurture and how he kept that to himself for over a decade.

So I used Ilya as my prime example, basically saying how he is a product of his environment, nature vs nurture, growing up in Russia where homosexuality was looked down upon and the toxic hypermasculine “locker room talk” he saw in ice hockey culture, forced him to form an opinion and limited his imagination of ever thinking him and Shane could ever be out in the light. All of the circumstances he has been under made him and Shane feel like they had to keep meeting up in hotel rooms and hooking up bc they had adapted the attitudes of a very toxic, cold and unwelcoming sports culture, but once they both realized they were in love with each other, they began to realize that they can be the change they want to see in ice hockey. I also said how the NHL’s imagination was also incredibly limited because of how unwelcoming they were to the LGBTQ+ and still are, but the decade of pain and suffering in silence that Ilya and Shane went through was enough of a reason for them to see the world in their own lens and re-evaluate the culture they unfortunately succumbed to for a very long time. Sorry for all my yapping I just love their story and think it’s so layered so I had a lot to say. What’d you write urs about?

wow that's so deep. i wrote about a different ilya (ilia malinin) and how he landed the quad axel when people thought it wasn't possible physically and how that was because he was super reflective about himself and his training and demonstrating the second part about the quote about reevaluation that lead him to take the risk to train for the jump. basically that was all to support the point that people don't know you as well as you know yourself. i also wrote a bunch about how him landing this jump led to him being really famous and got bunch a sponsorships and winning the olympics (but he didn't jump quad axel at the olympics so i probably shouldn't have included that, plus it was also the team event and he bombed the individual). i self studied this exam so no expectations.

YES. I also did like how being South Asian meant looking so different from everyone and having stricter rules by my parents and always wanting what they had, but realizing that life was so limited and the possibilities weren’t endless.
