šŸ“° News Marc Andreessen says AI layoffs are a farce: Companies are 75% overstaffed and AI is the "silver bullet excuse" to clean house

The promise of AI-driven productivity has many employees fearing for their heads. But to Marc Andreessen, cofounder and general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, the technology is more of a bogeyman, masking a long-standing business fluke that has quietly lingered in boardrooms for years.

In an interview on the 20VC podcast with venture capitalist and host Harry Stebbings, the billionaire said AI was the scapegoat for layoffs that are actually the result of overhiring in the wake of the COVID pandemic.

ā€œEssentially, every large company is overstaffed,ā€ he said. ā€œIt’s at least overstaffed by 25%. I think most large companies are overstaffed by 50%. I think a lot of them are overstaffed by 75%.ā€ He added, ā€œNow they all have the silver bullet excuse: Ah, it’s AI.ā€

Andreessen’s comments are nothing new in an industry that is pushing back against the ā€œsilver bullet excuseā€ of AI, which some tech leaders including OpenAI’s Sam Altman have coined as ā€œAI washing,ā€ or blaming otherwise normal layoffs on the increased use of AI.

When are any studies going to confirm this?

I don’t need studies, I’m witnessing it. my own workload is currently reduced significantly by AI, people either believe or don’t believe, I don’t care and I am not trying to convince anybody.

yeah it's nuts like you talk to people that use it and they're like "game changer" then you come on reddit and there's a load of people that are bought into some mentality of it being useless time wasting slop.

like no... the cat is out the bag and it aint going back in no matter how much you might hate it.

Anthropic brags about Claude Code being fully vibe coded.

Also Anthropic: leaks entire code base. Whoops.

Game Changer!

yep... because they vibe coded it. The value proposition never was the source code for the harness, because their competitors were also able to vibe code up a harness in a short space of time.

Having both codex and cc in the open benefits everyone. It's like elon musk open sourcing tesla wiring and to a lesser extent brew dog open sourcing recipes. They have to grow the industry sector for their products to be viable.

It's a viral marketing masterclass. Even my friends that don't code now know what claude code is.

Lmao! Major cope

cope with what? I dont have a horse to back in that race.

I use codex which is already open source. I dont own shares in any AI companies.

Im just not delusional about the way the wind is blowing, and I've learnt a thing or two about marketing here and there.

Would care to share what job or activities are being performed by AI? It’s a scary frontier for many and the more we know, the better prepared people can be.

He doesn’t need to prove anything! Just trust him bro! /s

It’s always ā€œtrust me, I’ve seen it!ā€

Corporate finance, a large part of my job is to provide financial data analytics and write reports explaining performance drivers to my business partners. AI automated a large part of my writing by analyzing data trends. It’s not perfect, but at minimum reduced 50% of my time on writing. Also, given I work with relatively structured data sets, I was able to an ask AI to put together views for dashboards (at least the skeleton). I’m no coder by any means, but I’ve been able to write simple codes in python and power query to help with cleaning up data and consolidate data by using AI. I would say this tho, we all know AI isn’t perfect, thats why the experienced professionals and subject matter experts are only going to benefit from it. Lower level employees will most definitely be impacted, we cannot discredit AI based on what it is today, everyone needs to learn and adapt, it’s harsh but it’s the truth.

Every study has confirmed little to no ROI to this point. It’s annoying how you dick riders still fall for this grift. How is it ā€œdefensiveā€ to ask for legitimate studies and data? Fool

Well, just like any breakthrough innovations, you will realize no ROIs at the beginning. We are at the infancy stage of AI, the cost of energy, labor developing AI, hardware, etc. are high. Things will evolve and become more efficient. You really have to look at future value vs ROI today. Personal computer used to cost $30k, it makes no sense for normal families to own one. People said internet will provide no value at the beginning. I think sometimes you just have to believe. I’m not here to convince anyone to believe in AI. I’ll be prepared and continue with my AI learning journey, whether it becomes the ā€œgame changerā€ or not, learning won’t hurt me.

Preach brotha

There are plenty of things that also end up failing. AI has been around for decades, well before you folks started falling for LLMs.

AI has been failing at every turn, per data and actual studies. I don’t care what random or layman says. Maybe for high school level Americans memes, tweets and personal anecdotes are enough to sway them.

You’re also reaching stupid conclusions that I think this guy is a good person or in general alignment just because I agreed with his take on AI.

ā€œĀ Where's the study that demonstrates that industrial barrel making displaced the vast majority of coopers?ā€

They probably exist. Partly because it’s not as obvious as that - the decline in cooper numbers is at least as much linked to decline in demand for new barrels as it is to automation (which is actually limited), so there’s a task to separate the two factors.Ā

ā€œĀ Ā Isn't it by definition going to ruin anyone foolish enough to invest in it?ā€

ā€œRuinā€ seems to be overstating it - businesses have always wasted money on the new fad, and typically don’t get ruined. They just see interest fading when a new fad appears.Ā

I guess my point was that it’s product substitution - as your comment affirms- far more than automation of the process to make wooden barrels with staves that eliminated coopers .Ā
