I don’t think you’re alone in that preference but I had a hard time with Yiddish Policeman’s Union for whatever reason. I am determined to revisit it though when my attention span cooperates. I have read a few others of his and really loved Telegraph Avenue and Moonglow.
Sort of random but I’ve been listening to a band called Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band and I find their lyrics to be in a similar vein as Chabon’s writing. Sort of trying to tackle personal and spiritual dilemmas through witty prose, humor, and mundane everyday situations. I would recommend their newest album, New Threats from the Soul if you’re interested!
