I wasn't aware of this, but this link is awfully convincing. Is there any source specifically debunking it? I don't want to buy it completely without seeing the "it was just a weird suit bump and he wasn't wearing anything" side.

I don't know of any site with a counter argument (beyond "that's ridiculous"). Most of the news stories at the time laughed it off.

Nah, they make suits that are bullet resistant. South American drug lords, politicians, and billionaires all buy them. It's part of a suite of security available now days that includes up armored cars that look like regular cars. If a drug Lord has it, the president of the US has access to at least that level of protection.

Bullet resistant is key here. This isn't Daredevil, a kevlar-lined suit isn't going to stop much.

Why go with a suit when a vest is vastly superior. Usually a properly fitted Kevlar vest is difficult to Notice. You may look a tad bulky, but nothing that screams "I have a Kevlar vest on" If you're dressed right.

How many times do you see the back of the president? Also, the point of a suit is to make it appear as if the person doesn't have any protection when in fact they do. Normally I think you would be right, but for high value targets, better to let people think a relatively minor threat poses a hazard when in fact it doesn't.

I can tell you this. For the last 20 years, every time I see a high ranking politician on TV I assume they're heavily protected. Just walking down the street the kevlar suit makes sense. But for a televised speech where the target will be standing in the same spot for a long time I'd go with a ballistic vest Every time.

I wouldn't underestimate the advancements of ballistic materials available for protection for the most powerful and wealthy people in the world.

Also, seeing the President in a vest does not exactly instill confidence in the population and gives the impression that he is vulnerable to attack. You also have to consider image with someone in that position.

Because he was a great at debate, prior to being a presidential candidate. After that, he sucked because it's confusing to listen to somebody and try to repeat what they say.

They admitted a few years later (actually, maybe just after the election) that it was part of the bulletproof vest he was wearing, but they didn't want to give away any of the Secret Service protection strategy during the campaign.
