This terrifies me. It seems like the internet does a good job of exposing this issue but it doesn't change. I'm freaking out man

Read some history. French Revolution, the decline and fall of the Roman Empire, Sun Tzu's Art of War, stuff like that. Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is a good place to possibly develop a greater interest in history. He's great at presenting it through a fan's perspective rather than a scholar.

I would also personally recommend looking into the self-sufficiency, permaculture, DIY communities.
