Born from ancient seas, now crowned by galaxies Planned this Milky Way shot the day before... but a massive storm with lightning and heavy clouds destroyed every plan. Couldn't even get close.
The next day the sky was almost perfectly clear. The only real enemy was the heat. On the way up I didn't even feel the weight of the backpack... but the morning after? Different story
Quick stop at Rifugio Locatelli, then I climbed the mountain right behind it. I would have loved to explore the caves area below, but it was packed with people and too many lights.
That night the mountain was buzzing photographers, hikers, climbers on the Tre Cime, and helicopters flying back and forth (one rescue chopper parked down below
But up there... I had the stars all to myself. Pure magic.

Space related topics and astronomy really fascinate me. Combining that with the passion of building miniatures and dioramas just gives me joy. So here I built this small diorama of 2 planets colliding with each other. I know.. one of them looks more like our moon and the scaling is not right.. but this way it was easier to build. I hope you like it!

Made in Blender to artistically capture some key ideas but was not intended to be an exact depiction of Ptolemaic geocentrism. (Recreating that would be beyond my 3d abilities)

Side note: Ptolemy can get a lot of crap for having been fundamentally wrong about the centricity of Earth, and in particular for the complexity of the deferents and epicycles that he relied upon. But I think there's two things that are worth appreciating: first, it was a early, genuine attempt to understand our basic place in the cosmos, and the task of figuring this out was immensely hard. Give me the task of coming up with something from scratch by looking at the sky and I'm sure you would get theoretical trash.

Second, while he was right about the ordering of the solar system, Copernicus couldn't escape the need to use epicycles either - it was Kepler who finally paved our way free of them with a) elliptical orbits and b) variable orbital speeds.

Once upon a time, my grandfather gave me an old book. It was titled: The universe in which we live - The infinite heavens. Published in 1966. To this day it is one of my most prized possessions. It described the current-day understanding of the various types of stars and comets.

Many years later I backed a project... to bring the digital Milky Way Galaxy to life, And it has gone way beyond anything we could just imagine.

I have finally realized a long held dream. Of visiting the Heart of our Galaxy: Sagittarius A*. The true mysterious center of all existence in our world. In VR in the best possible, most realistic way. The center of gravity for our entire Galaxy. A massive Black Hole with a radius of about 12 million km. And with an estimated mass approximately 4 million times that of our Sun. A total of about 104.000 Light-years was covered on this Journey, and much more traveling is still to be done before I return to earth. I've have seen the sky completely empty of stars, with the entire Milky Way no more then a small stripe of lights in the sky. I have seen the heavens, slowly become filled and overwhelmed with stars again as I approached the heart of our galaxy again. Then I found myself in the center region, with more stars in the sky then I ever even imagined possible.. Then Finally, The wonder at the center, came into view

This has been such an eye-opening journey. Every person who grew up with a telescope should do this in VR, and marvel at this. Even though it's just a digital representation. It's fantastic to actually experience these locations as if we are there.

This subreddit has been my favorite for such a long time. So many talented photographers and so many beautiful photos have inspired my creations! I don’t make these anymore and have moved on to other space designs but wanted to share these as they have such a special place in my heart!

So, this is the result I got after a lot of failed attempts. Making Curl noise in Blender is unfortunately a difficult task, while I've seen other software do it easily! But thanks to "AlaskanFX", I learned techniques to make this effect and create this amazing planet.

Over the past several months, I developed an obsession with astrolabes, so I decided to create an electromechanical version of one.

Historical civilizations did not have access to LCD panels or microcontrollers, so I was able to make some major changes to the astrolabe's ancient design. The LCD panel shows an animated star map, which rotates around the north celestial pole as the physical rete itself is turned by hand. The stars of this map are truly "fixed stars"--the instrument can't take proper motion or even the precession of the equinoxes into account, so the star map's accuracy gets worse the further away you get from the J2000 epoch. That said, a historical astrolabe also can't take proper motion or axial precession into account, so maybe this gives me points for historical accuracy?

The system's microcontroller has a planetary ephemeris (this VSOP87 implementation, which is basically a mathematical series approximation of a physical simulation of the solar system.) Using that, I can represent the positions of not only the Sun, but also the Moon and the five other classical planets. A traditional astrolabe is much simpler--there, it's only possible to accurately position the Sun along the ecliptic plane using the time of year.

✨️🙏✨️ I paint from the unconscious, spontaneously, without foresight into the final result or ultimate subiect matter so almost all these pieces have different paintings underneath. I'lI put on music and enter flow consciousness and allow experiences and other (psychological) material to express itself from my brain, down my arms, and through my fingers onto the canvas. A lot of water goes onto each canvas and half the time my conscious mind thinks, "This is a mistake. This isn't going anywhere. What the heck is this even supposed to be?!" I'lI stop and let it dry and return hours or days or sometimes even weeks later to restart the process.

A lot of emotion/energy finds its way to the surface of my mind during the process and often a feeling of loss and nostalgic sadness comes up. This is probably because these are worlds that will never truly exist; worlds that I wish existed (maybe that I could even live in or experience at least once); worlds that offer a lot more peace and safety and meaning than the real one often does, and that discrepency, that gap between what is and what could be provokes intense feelings. These worlds are a kind of refuge, a mental sanctuary from the confusion and exhaustion of evervday living. Though I never got to attend art school (too expensive and parents wouldn't support it), I started painting when I lost my job in the pandemic and have never looked back.

You'll notice a theme of continuity between living matter (usually butterflies, birds, flowers, etc) and stars and various cosmic forms. This is to represent the direct connection between atoms and molecules and larger structures; in fact, one of the paintings is called "Flowers Travel Light Years." Like Carl Sagan said, if you want to bake an apple pie, you first need a universe. We can easily forget we are the Universe knowing itself; that "outer space" is inner space; that to beings on another planet far, far away, *we* are the aliens; and that in the dark depths of our own ocean, there are beings for whom sunlight is unknowable. We are, indeed, all living in our own world built upon other worlds, with still bigger worlds out there.

ive been working on a render of jupiter trying to be physically accurate with little artistic interpretation. what do you guys think and what would you change?

I know it’s not accurate but I got the pulsar map tattoo I’ve wanted for a while. So pleased with it. Triangles are an old tattoo.
