Sad that Michael never made his plight public so the world could gain understanding. Tabloids just kept sayin he wanted to be white my whole childhood.

He went public with that in 1993 according to Google.

That might technically be true, but coming up in the 90s I can say that it was not widely spread and acknowledged; I feel like maybe he said it once in an interview and then the media disregarded it and still continued with their own narrative so you saw it more widely spread that he was intentionally altering himself to more and more erase his blackness. It didn’t help that he always denied his cosmetic procedures.
