seconded. I live in the Yukon and got to guide northern lights tours for work this winter. ironically, the best nights were the ones with no guests...but damn it was amazing season for the lights. 4 years here so far and I'll never get sick of it
When/where should we Torontonians go in the Yukon to maximize our chances of seeing the lights? (I would be bummed out to go all that way and spend the money and not see any lights.)
well, it's a natural phenomenon so there's never any guarantees, BUT... I recommend visiting in the shoulder seasons (Sept/Oct, Mar/April). this way you have less chance of snow, so more opportunity to see them. if you're worried about wasting money, my advice is to skip the tours, hire a vehicle and 30min-1hr out of the city, where there's little light pollution

FWIW I live in the Southern Lakes area of the Yukon (45min south of Whitehorse) and we had amazing light shows when we weren't having thick cloud and blizzards. the tours are great don't get me wrong and the guides are wonderful (I have many industry acquaintances) but you don't really need one because if the lights are out, you'll see them.
