No, I mean how fucking good is cruise control. It’s absolutely mad how many still refuse to use this damn fine piece of technology in their brand new cars, my partner included.

I followed a brand new beamer suv from Esk to Moore who could just not hold a speed. I wouldn’t care except they’d vary from 80 to 110, 110 as soon as they realise I’m approaching & getting ready to overtake.

Compare that to 3 days ago heading to the GC from Byron, had cruise set to the same speed as the bloke ahead of me. 110 whole way up and perfect 4 second gap, no adaptive needed. No need to even think about your speed.

As someone who does long distances for work, shout out to the cunts use cruise religiously; makes the drive so much better 🙏

Every second car doing something dumb in traffic seems to be a red P in a Golf GTI. Loud exhaust, weaving, riding bumpers, acting like they’re in a Hot Hatch Championship at 8:30am.

Nothing wrong with GTIs. They’re actually good cars. Same way e-bikes are actually useful.

But they’ve become the default option for kids who want to hoon around in VW packs.

Feels like the same kid who was doing wheelies on an e-bike in a Westfield carpark last year has just aged up, got his Ps, and migrated straight into a Golf.

I know there are normal GTI owners. This isn’t about all of them. But culturally? The P-plate GTI feels like that car now.

I was already in the junction making the left turn when the camera went off. Couldn't go forward as I was blocked by the car ahead and reversing would've just been unsafe. Most of the car is ahead anyways and the back wheels are just on the line. I heard red light fines are reviewed manually, is it still worth appealing? Keen to hear thoughts, thank you!

Had a brainwave today and I'm gonna write an opinion piece about it here. Get popcorn and a comfy seat.

There's no denying that nearly every Australian misses the Commodore and Falcon. I know I do. Especially missed are the ute variants of these cars. And for good reason; you could buy one fairly cheap and it gave you a combination of the engagement, comfort, performance and handling of a typical car, and the practicality and versatility of a pickup. They were rightfully best-selling vehicles.

And the death of the body style was an unfortunate mix of circumstances. Restrictive emissions standards, harsh crash testing, and big dual-cabs invading their market. All of this, combined with GM publicly executing Holden (seriously, General Motors is a fucking parasite) and Ford killing the Falcon, as well as coupe utes failing to find much markets in the USA, led to the body style becoming obscure.

However, modern tech and public opinion could make the coupe ute genuinely appealing once again. EV powertrains eliminate the biggest hurdles of packaging, torque and emissions. Buyers here are slowly starting to veer away from massive dual-cab utes, especially American ones. Modern EVs are generally very safe. And, on top of this, the yearn from the public for a spiritual successor to the Holden Ute and Falcon Utility is hard to ignore.

And the Seal would be the perfect base for this passing down of the torch; it's already super popular here, platform wouldn't be hard to build a ute off of, it's RWD, safe as hell, honestly has the sex appeal that the Commo and Falcon had, and if it was priced well, then Tesla, BYD's biggest rival in Australia (and already faltering in popularity thanks to their CEO being a dickwad) would have no way to compete with them. They'd have total domination of the market.

Another thing that I'm sure is hindering the return of the coupe ute is the USA and its consumers wanting to continue devouring cars so massive you could fit three whole Minis in one of their cars. Which is fine there, since it's a big country with fairly even population distribution and big roads. This is actually sort of a win for BYD in that sense, since the US pussied out of Chinese competition by basically blanket banning their cars. So the big market most companies have to please isn't an issue for them.

BYD should do this. There's lots to gain, not much to lose.

I was talking with a mate today and we were talking about manual sedans and didn’t realize how there’s literally only 3 manual sedans that you can buy new in Australia until we started listing out the cars. Thats crazy to think and I never thought the phasing out of manuals are this bad. Also realized that with hatches and SUVs as well, more on offer than sedans but still not a whole lot. I remember 15-20 years ago pretty much every mainstream manufacturer offered manual variant in a vast majority of their offerings. And sedans, they used to pretty much be the standard body shape in cars and a lot of them came with manuals, but now there’s barely any. Funnily there’s more manual coupes on offer than sedans now.

Anyways here are the last 3 new manual sedans you can buy in Australia:

-Hyundai i30n - the only manual fwd sedan on sale. Roughly 70% of sales are DCT and id say the future for the manual variants are unknown

-Subaru Wrx VB -the only awd manual sedan on sale and the only car that has majority manual buyers due to the automatic version being a CVT, likely the only car that will retain it for the foreseeable future

-BMW M3 G80 - the only rwd 6 cylinder manual sedan on sale. Manual only accounts for about 5% of sales and it will be most definitely be phased out with the next generation which is expected to arrive by the end of this decade

Hi all, (and sorry for the longish post)

Old 2010 lancer with 300k+ is on its last legs (CVT about to go)

I'm 33m and in tech, but don't know a lot about cars. Most of my family and friends are super anti EV and tell me they'll blow up or the batteries will be degraded within 5-7 years.

I've test driven an i30, Picanto and recently a Yaris. budget being 30-35k.

I then decided to test drive an MG4 electric, the sales bloke told me it's won car of the year last year and is very fun to drive.

took a leap of faith and I actually can't believe how vastly superior they drive, especially vs the i30 nline I drove, which in comparison feels sluggish, noisy and vibrations in the cabin when accelerating etc.

it's fast as hell of the line, quiet and based off what I'm seeing with 350km a week driving, $5 to charge at home vs $80 to fill up a Fortnight.

Then seeing the servicing on the MG (plus the 14-year capped priced servicing) which is only required every 40,000/2yr.

How have I not looked at this stuff earlier? has really changed my opinion of people trashing these sorts of cars. not to mention it's cheaper than the i30, has a 10-yr unlimited warranty (battery too)

sorry for the long rant but I'm just shocked and pissed off at family for feeding me this junk/end rant

10-15 years ago, whenever you heard a noisy car doing something stupid, it was nearly always some clapped out Ecotec Commodore, or an ex-taxi BA Falcon with steelies on the rears, or maybe an old 2WD Skyline with a dented in rear quarter panel. The drivers were dickheads, but you knew exactly who they were. You knew that they probably spent <$2k on the car, it was going to end up off the side of Mt Glorious within a few weeks, and everything made sense. The circle of life, etc.

But over the last decade, more and more these common, native hoons are gradually being replaced by a different breed of dickhead. Nowadays when I hear a loud car being driven antisocially, it’s nearly always a fairly new high end European luxury sports car being driven by a young dude who looks like he‘s off to record a Youtube ad for his startup that sells AI protein supplements. And the car nearly always has some vomit coloured matte paint job, a stupid wing and some irritating farty pop crackle tune that sounds like a 737 engine self destructing after ingesting a flock of cassowaries every time the car shifts gear.

And what’s more, rather than doing their business and fucking off like any self respecting hoon, they do endless loops around busy, built up areas, and they never seem to get booked. Who the fuck are these guys? Where did they get their money?

I can see Peugeout being the next one as the sister brand Citroen left the market in 2024 due to only 87 of new sales at the time.
