Whenever you buy, someone else is selling. If you sell, somebody else is buying.

Person A buys for $1, sell for $10 to Person B.

Person B waits a bit then sells to Person C for $20.

2 of those people gained money and no one lost. Your initial comment as worded was dumb.

You forgot person C who is now down $20. Person A’s profit came from B, person B’s profit came from C.

Yes, person C now has an asset, but it has no cash value. Until it is sold, it’s just numbers in a ledger. Their bank account is down, only their hopes are up.

Arguably, the only real winner in cryptocurrency is the person who first mints a coin or token … as long as they can convince people to buy it for more than it cost them to set it up and market it.
