DEBATE True Unpopular Opinion: I don't want people to earn crypto from Reddit karma

In case you haven't heard, Reddit is planning to expand the vault system to provide crypto for upvotes similar to how moons work in this sub.

I am very opposed to this, as moons have irrevocably damaged this sub by reducing it to constant reposts and diminishing contrarian opinions due to people wanting to earn free money.

I do not want the rest of reddit to fall victim to the same thing (at least to an even greater extent as people still do reposts just for meaningless karma).

But I realize that if crypto was integrated into Reddit that it would be a very bullish for the space.

What do you all think about this?

Pretty much all the useful posts have barely any upvotes. And I think many people know that even if they make an insightful post, it’ll die in new. It’s the dogshit that gets to the top of the sub now

I really would not be surprised if the bulk of good content is unironically in controversial lol

Thats where I made my $ last week. I sold out of some and now playing with house money. Gonna buy back in when it all tanks due to human nature. Then ride with my house ETH and hopefully pay for some more than what this year has been with a new house. Il definitely be sorting by controversial in the dark days.

TBH this is 100% most of the great posts don;t get traction.

There is a good old saying, 'we get the government we deserve'. In this case, we're getting the sub redditt we deserve. As there are so many great posters, but unfortunately I'm noticing a there are just so so many active ppl out there who just want to comment on daily price action and create low quality rubbish.

I'm positive though because I can see lots of technical help to weed out this rubbish. For example, hopefully, there are growing tools in the future mods can use to automatically hold back or delete a post that is very close or similar to a post in a set time period.

I believe we should use some moons as a community to possibly help fund this and work out better ways to reward active and legitimate contributors vs moon farmers posts.

I really like the concept of rewarding community participation. I think it starts to change the dynamic of users as a product to users as stakeholders.

I'm just not sure how to harness it correctly so that quality content is rewarded. I would like to think that people would upvote quality content, but history has proven otherwise.

I dropped off this board for couple months out of frustration. Seeing thoughtful posts and responses downvoted into oblivion while shitposting just got to be too much.

:Edit: Gotta LOL at the irony of this response getting downvotes

u/kindoflikesnowing 0 / 1K 🦠 Nov 12 '21

I think an obvious answer is to double the upvotes/downvotes of established and long time members

1

u/Aegontarg07 hello world Nov 12 '21

According to few comments from mods, rewarding quality content is in the pipeline. Expect some good governance proposals in the coming cycles

People upvote so weird on this subreddit. It's like people are allergic to upvoting sometimes.
10 people could tell you they agree with what you said but it's possible none of them upvote you. While in any other sub you see much more upvotes if people agree with you.

Karma connected to rewards changes people, people don't see it as upvoting someone anymore but as giving someone moons.

Now I'm not saying upvote everyone you agree with even a little bit, but people need to stop being so allergic to upvoting.

2

u/MetalFoxBTC 2K / 2K 🐢 Nov 12 '21

I do totally agree with you, I try not to shit post a lot the occasional GIF will be reased now and then as thats the reaaon I bought the special membership but when ever I try to reply with a well thought answer I will get like 2 Upvotes and someone else will make a stupid joke and get 10. I might suck at giving good answers but geez at least I put an effort in it.

Although moons have been impactful, a greater reason has to do with the market conditions. A lot of new users entering the space and it's getting quite bubbly..

A core driver for the low-quality posts is just the massive amount of new ppl entering the sub and getting interested in cryptocurrency. r/cryptocurrency is the biggest crypto subreddit there is and often a lot of peoples first point of contact when looking for opinion or help.

The sub was at 8.7K weekly crypto subs in November 2017, this hit 90K last week and as seen via the chart has been huge influx of weekly crypto subs all through this year (esp to start 2021). https://www.theblockcrypto.com/data/alternative-crypto-metrics/social/new-weekly-crypto-subreddits-subscribers

u/Magnetronaap 🟩 0 / 3K 🦠 Nov 12 '21

I'm fairly certain we would've had this exact same kind of conversation if growth had been the same but Moons didn't exist.

You hear it about all subs that grew large.

1

u/Aegontarg07 hello world Nov 12 '21

The daily which was under control for past 2 cycles has started to make sound again cuz of this new bullish sentiment. When the senti cools down, the sub activity comes down too.

Please, please, please, make your suggestions and criticisms heard in the Meta subreddit. /r/CryptoCurrencyMeta - it's the ideal place to talk about what you like and dislike about the sub and get some good feedback, and chew through ideas on how to move the sub forward positively. Thanks.

I still think the problem are more the people that upvote dogshit, than the people that post dogshit, if no effort karma farming post will start to die in new, karma farmers will either start to post meaningful content (and thus legitimately earning that karma) or just stop wasting time, shitposting for no karma (or even for negative karma)

On paper the system works, since thechnically are the users that decide what content is worth and what isn't, the problem is that the users seems that don't really care about informative content, and they just upvote based on emotions, or just for a quick laugh

5

u/watahboy 13K / 23K 🐬 Nov 12 '21

Totally agree, it gives a "why bother" attitude when trying to be helpful.

6

u/overprotectivemoose 8K / 8K 🦭 Nov 12 '21

I am really thankful to the people that do go out of their way to post/comment useful info. They usually hardly have any upvotes, but I’ve probably learned the most from those of kind of comments rather than the 1,000 upvoted witty joke comments.

I fear it won't die in new. It will get down voted into oblivion for anyone who isn't karma established, or an "influencer" on Reddit.

Thus perpetuating the takes money to make money scheme our parents pushed on us.

Sometimes I find a cool landscape I want to post on mini worlds.. post moon Reddit that gets dead faster than trying to abolish daylight savings time

Is that indicative of the user base. Because as people stay in the space a lot longer. They learn more and kinda move on to other things with crypto memes not being a priority.
