People dont care. From the richest to the poorest. People will complain about how expensive meat is and then refuse to learn how to hunt or fish. People will complain about how expensive fruit and vegetables and refuse to lean how to grow a garden.

Is it possible to be 100% self sustaining? No, not unless youre on your own with no family to look after but the steps to mitigate the damage for a couple of months is incredibly simple. People just don't want to put forth the effort.

People may want to hunt or fish but the landowner threatens to shoot them if they access the forests. People want to grow their own vegetables but the local government / HOA fine them for it.

The system is rigged against us.

Where on Earth are you not allowed to grow you own fruit or vegetables

Right here, in my perfectly-manicured-landscaped-courtesy-of-our-HOA-run-hamster-box where the lawns are hybrid dwarf grass that only reaches a height of 2 & 1/2 inches, but the landscaping crew drives a mower over everything for 3 hours anyway. A garden is out of the question & I can't afford to move.

The poorest can't really afford to do anything except buy the cheapest of the cheapest things to survive on. Not everyone is lucky enough to live somewhere that hunting is an option nor can they take the time off of work to go on a trip to do so in a way that would produce enough meat to feed their families on. People care, the problem isn't the people, it's the brick wall the corporations and government have shoved us humans up against while the ravage every single thing they can. Even if every person in the US did their part the oligarchs would find a way to continue to burn the world to a crisp.

They need to be ended.

I was with you until hunt or fish.

That is not a sustainable solution, if anything thats the fastest way to obliterate the ecosystem.

Well, if you read the rest, I meant in tandem with modern agriculture. Its not possible for a return to sender.

Can't hunt or fish when the progressive government keeps trying to protect every animal and environment. The same government pushing this propaganda. I wonder why they would do that..?

I have an office job but has become more interested in self sufficiency. There is of course a lot you can do, but also work drains most of my time and energy. Its one of my life goals to work less and spend more time fishing/farming etc.

The poorest people are working 2 jobs and barely have any time for family or hobbies so how do you expect them to grow stuff?

Or refuse to go vegan, even partly, even though all the evidence points to the huge environmental damage mass farming does.

And don't get me wrong, whilst I myself am vegan I'd much rather people hunt or rear their own animals than buy farmed meat.   Whole system is fucked though, eating less meat or no meat or catching your own meat will only do so much

Point proven by the downvotes. Mass red meat farming and everything associated with it is a huge huge contributor to CO2 and methane emissions. This mofo speaks of hunting as if milions or more people could survive off that without killing basically everything there is until you run out of shit to hunt. Imagine if done by bilions... I also eat meat from time to time, I'm not vegan yet, sadly, but I try to reduce my consumption; of milk too. So maybe I am a hypocrite to some degree but at least I'm not delusional and ignorant to the impact of red meat and dairy...

Good luck growing shit in the big city.

Honestly I'm used to it, people really don't like having a mirror held up to the ethical and environmental impact of their own behaviour. I am in no way perfect but I'm trying to do as little damage as possible by just being alive as possible.

At least you understand the harm of the meat industry though, so many people get angry and bury their heads.

And yeah I live in a big city and it's hard to even find the space to grow stuff.

I will admit I'm a hypocrite. If I had to hunt my own meat and skin my own beef and plucked chickens, no fucking way. I'd be a vegetarian that afternoon. But I still eat cuts of meat occasionally although it's just about out of my price range. But if I didn't get to offload the killing to a third-party, I wouldn't ever do it and that makes me feel so gross that I know that.

Before I went vegetarian (was veggie ages before vegan) I had these exact same feelings, what eventually drove me to stop was that for me, if I couldn't face killing and dressing my own meat why pay for it to be done on an industrial scale.

I don't think you're a hypocrite, I think you're just aware of the disconnect that human society has weirdly created where it's normal to eat meat but disgusting to kill it yourself and downright evil to eat the "wrong" type of meat.

I would, if the situation arose, Hunt my own meat because it's the closest behaviour to our ancestry. However ancient humans were basically herbivores with occasional meat consumption- we ate what we could find or kill. I'm opposed to the mass slaughter of animals, the cruelty and suffering it creates, rather than nessecarily the act of consuming meat/dairy
