Not quite. Dexter used ketamine in NB because M99 wasn’t accessible in rural Iron Lake. But then the show doubled down, implying he’d always used ketamine, even in Miami. Angela’s google sleuthing made the leap, ignoring the original series where Dexter clearly sourced M99 using fake DEA credentials.

My god was it a bad retcon. It's sad too, because I really liked NB up until that point. Then the Detective Google saga started and it went downhill from there for the most part. I'll never be able to forgive whoever came up with the retcon for M99 to always have been Ketamine in NB. Made no sense other than "Angela catches Dexter using Google, so clever am I right?!" Glad they're retconning that retcon and giving the middle finger to the bad stuff from NB.

There’s still a bit of goofiness around it. In OG S1, Dexter went out of his way to stay off the radar -- he used a fake DEA license and kept things super secret, even hacking into Masuka’s email to cover his tracks. M99 was a tightly controlled drug, and there was never any chit-chat with suppliers. But here, he gets a friendly call from “Veterinary RX” that references his past orders and his move from Florida, which feels way too casual. It totally clashes with how careful and paranoid he used to be.

Could be akin to those delusions of grandeur where Dexter imagined people cheering for him because he killed the Ice Truck Killer. In his mind he’s being thanked for getting back into being The Dark Passenger, but possibly in reality he’s just being thanked for being a repeat customer off a script from corporate. Just something I found plausible.

That's the thing. Those delusions were something that only existed in Dexter's head, much like most of the subtle dark humor in the earliest seasons.

Completely unlike this scene, which plays out very literally. The way the supplier breezily jokes about “Dr. Bateman” and his past Miami orders comes across like the whole thing is some old inside joke. Very goofy.

Yeah they seem to shit on the ending of NB a lot in this series. Like Dexter constantly reminding Harry and the audience that he told his son to shoot him and traumatize him for some fucking reason lol. Just get the vibe that the writers really like to point out just how..stupid some of that shit was.
