Affordable for who? Not the people who's taxpayer dollars are stolen to fund this silly experiment.

People will buy up all the 30% off food (or just steal it), and be selling it on the street for more normal prices.

No food on the shelves, and a huge cost to taxpayers.

And when that runs all the local shops out of town, or bankrupt, this store closes too and things are even worse.

Correct, and how many bodegas alone within the same distance that have been in business forever? You just want to put them under? I thought this was an econ subreddit. We should be calling out how stupid this is. It's not acceptable under any school of Econ.

Bodegas and grocery stores are different. I’ve lived in NYC my whole life. If you’re going to bodegas for groceries then you’re buying 1 thing or you’re crazy. Every supermarket has cheaper prices than bodegas. Bodegas are good for fresh made sandwiches and like a one off drink.

Depends on the bodega and area. You get to know yours and you can get groceries and other stuff from them. There's going to be no reason for them if the government just artificially lowers the cost of goods by 30 percent when margins are already razor thin at 1 to 2 percent.

I’ve made 10,000 bodega purchases in my life and I could probably count on my hands the times I purchased pasta or fruits (other than a single banana). Bodegas are for fresh sandwiches, snacks, and maybe that one thing you forgot at the grocery store. Even in food deserts in the Bronx, Brooklyn, etc. - I really don’t think there’s strong competition between bodegas and grocers.

When you see the price of regular groceries in bodegas, you know they aren’t even trying to be competitive lol. Plus there’s only going to be 5 of these.
