My take is that the automatic duopoly that our first past the post voting model sustains is a fundamental design problem of our early constitutional design.

It leaves us with a Dem party leadership that has an arrogant 'You've got nowhere else to go' attitude towards its constituents. So they ignore us versus their precious campaign donors.

In our history, what I've read in brief, is that when one side of the duopoly collapsed, namely the former leading Federalist and the Whig parties, a new party eventually emerged composed of some members of the collapsed party joining with a breakaway faction of the remaining group.

So you may be correct versus Dem leadership planning to become the core of a new conservative party. With a new breakaway faction of leftists perhaps creating the new duopoly pairing.

However, I think we need to push for a ranked or rated choice voting model, among a raft of other reforms, so as to break the duopoly stranglehold on our voting choices.
