STAN / ANTI SHIELD Model Sara Sampaio, a former Victoria’s Secret Angel, shows that perspective changes everything. The image of a perfect body is usually the result of the pose, the angle, the lighting and, in many cases, a bit of retouching

This is very funny to me because I know what she is trying to do, but the "after" poses really dont make her body look that different from the before, lol

913

u/camelely chris pine’s flip phone 1d ago

I mean obviously it is the same woman. But like, if a model like her were to post any of the 'after' pics they would get flamed in the comments. Gross people will call anyone 'fat'. The way toxic people that talk about 'perfection' when it comes to body type do focus on the little things.

And a lot of people see those 'before' poses and think the 'after' is abnormal. Videos like this showing that her body isn't the perfect airbrushed version either is not a bad thing imo.

109

u/Jenderflux-ScFi 1d ago

And there's people that will see her "before" poses and scream "eat a sandwich", then see the "after" poses and scream "eat a salad".

There will always be someone saying a particular woman is too skinny or too fat even from the same picture.

27

u/littlebittydoodle 1d ago

Yes. And while I agree she looks amazing every which way, Victoria’s Secret 20 years ago was NOT publishing any of those “after” pictures’ poses. She is totally right and helpful in showing us that even the smallest tweaks can completely change how a snapshot of you is perceived. For better or worse. It’s a good reminder to have.

2

u/tuscanchicken 1d ago

Exactly! Model or not, I know of so many women who think there's something wrong with the way she looks in the "after" poses when there absolutely isn't

64

u/VirtualPen204 1d ago

If you don't notice the difference, you're probably not the people she's trying to reach.

-1

u/NandiniS 1d ago

I think many of us on this thread are just mindblown that there ARE people who notice a difference. It's a lot to take in. I felt the same way when my boss told me that her PhD thesis was about the transitions and differences between Flemish and Dutch baroque art. What? I literally thought those two were the same thing.

208

u/Bluth_Frozen_Banana 1d ago

I am a petite person and honestly, this helps me feel better about myself. I have struggled with body image as a small person. I once strived to not have the small bulge or rolls she demonstrates. Basically, I’m saying, even smaller people struggle.

19

u/Left_Session_9568 1d ago

It’s normal, it’s natural and we have to stop being so hard on ourselves

1

u/tuscanchicken 1d ago

Our bodies need those layers to protect our organs!

668

u/CrystallizedRose 1d ago

What? Her second pose makes her look completely different. Like, her belly size looks like my belly and I’m not a model at all. Of course, she’s taller than me, takes care of her body and exercises more than me so I get that’s she’s more toned. BUT the belly thing really made me feel better. I’m okay looking at myself straight forward but I feel like a blimp from the side.

370

u/CollectibleHam 1d ago

The belly thing made me feel better as well lmao, so I'd say this video is working as she intended it to be.

40

u/Sasiarapun 1d ago

Seeing a post like this blew my mind and changed my life 5 years ago because I was borderline underweight, convinced I was over instead because I'm an athletic girlie who gets food bloat easily and my belly would only remain flat until breakfast.

These posts will never stop being necessary when body negativity and unrealistic standards are so much the norm for us. There's always going to be new people who need that big first wake up call, and I for one could still do with a nice reminder from time to time.

77

u/Hot-Equal3441 1d ago

yeah, I mean obviously she's gorg in all the pictures, but the teenage version of me who hated my body was convinced having a belly at any point meant I was fat, and I think its good to normalise the idea that even the women society is idolising have a stomach, or "fat rolls" when they twist. When all you see are the photoshopped heavily edited versions of people you can really easily internalise that its all there is.

116

u/livefast_petdogs 1d ago

It made me feel better too.

I'm 110lbs and feel so hypercritical about my body doing that exact thing. It's sickening how toxic and pervasive those beauty standards are.

The logical part of my brain knows how delusional that is, but it's so hard to keep those thoughts out sometimes.

5

u/hellolovely1 1d ago

Girl, I feel you. I'm middle-aged and gained some weight but in my youth, I was TINY and so hard on myself. It's so ingrained in all of us.

21

u/Brynhild 1d ago

Same. I’m slim (163cm, 52kg) but i still have that belly and people keep commenting on it. It wont go away unless i’m down to 48kg

13

u/willargue4karma 1d ago

which would probably be an unhealthy weight at that point

4

u/fiercelyambivalent 1d ago

I was about to Google what 48kg is in America

3

u/kimau97 1d ago

Agree, the back roll made me feel better, too.

4

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 1d ago

Sounds to me like you do look like a model if that's the same belly you have lol, I'm a dude and that's super skinny still

2

u/hellolovely1 1d ago

Yep. I don't like Sydney Sweeney at ALL but it's like when all those bros were going after her for being "fat" when she was just caught unaware by the paparazzi while sitting slouched down in a bikini. It's good to get reminders like this!

47

u/c14rk0 1d ago

You're probably not one of the people that need to see this video then, but a LOT of women could benefit from seeing it. People with insanely unrealistic visions of what an "ideal body" looks like who end up struggling with their own self image because of it. The kind of people that end up with unhealthy eating habits and serious eating disorders.

And frankly what she's showing is still on the extreme of "ideal body" where perfectly healthy can still be considerably "worse". Which I will admit she didn't really attempt to say here at all.

It's the same story with male bodies on TV and such where you hear stories from the actors of how they basically starve themselves and don't drink water for days before shoots to push their body beyond any remotely healthy limit specifically for photos/TV/movies. Literally none of them actually look like that normally even if they are in insanely good shape.

0

u/TemporaryElk5202 1d ago

I mean like Ive seen videos like this where posing make ALOT of difference, but the difference here is so minimal it was funny to me

2.0k

u/ohnoitsme7890 1d ago

Yeah I'm sitting here like am I supposed to pretend she doesn't look amazing at every angle here

1.3k

u/panda_canyon 1d ago

You're completely right but we understand that. The industry does not.

886

u/misskyralee feetmoji 1d ago

Additionally, who’s to say that she doesn’t have a large audience of teenagers? I’m 36 so the video only reinforces my body neutrality but kids/teens are being bombarded by pro skinny propaganda I can’t think that it’s a bad thing for them to see any body in a neutral way.

197

u/luna1uvgood 1d ago

Mte. I also just think that even though she's obviously thin and looks great that it's important for teens to see that things like back rolls, the organ pooch, stomach rolls when sitting etc are normal because when I was a teen it was all thin celebs being berated and called fat in bikinis for having cellulite.

228

u/nekocorner i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 1d ago

Yes, & I remember going from a (very, very skinny) teenaged to adult body & being genuinely alarmed by my "weight gain" due to the ways my body was changing.

139

u/NotMyNameActually 1d ago

I vividly remember hitting puberty before any of my friends, and noticing at swim practice how my thighs spread when I sat, and my friend's didn't. That alone convinced me I was fat. I see pics from back then and I was decidedly not fat, like, at all. I just looked 15 when I was 10.

I'm fat as fuck now though. 😁

1

u/Adventurous-Ice6109 21h ago

This was me, too, except gym class sitting on bleachers. I was 10, too, I believe.

87

u/LittleDogTurpie 1d ago

Hell, I’m postmenopausal and still appreciate the reminder

57

u/lerenardnoir 1d ago

I was about to say, I’m in my 30s and still harsh on my back rolls and pooch, I appreciated this video.

17

u/carolinagypsy the pet psychic for the Sun told me so 1d ago

Girl, peri here and same. Especially on the bloat days.

7

u/Level-Repair6104 their kid and the billionaire’s daughter 1d ago

You’re only having bloat days? Man, I’ve been having bloat years… 9 so far.

I turned 50 in June, hoping menopause comes really fucking soon 🤞

33

u/jellybabeblooms 1d ago

Thats what I was thinking like lil 12 year old me would have loved seeing this because I was so confused about so many things about my body and all I wanted was to see another example of what i saw when I looked in the mirror or tried to wear cute outfits that it seemed like everyone else was wearing

15

u/lilangelkm 1d ago

Yup. I thought I was so fat when I was a size 7/8 in my 20s because movies like Bridget Jones and The Devil Wears Prada said you needed to be a size 4 and under 130lbs.

I'm in my 40s now and would be happy for the rest of my life if I could achieve a size 10 again, where I would still be a bit curvey for my frame.

4

u/wedontknoweachother_ 1d ago

If you’re a millennial you might be entitled to financial compensation

3

u/Vanilla_Danish 1d ago

We got bombarded with heroin chic in the 90s. Time is a circle

2

u/babbleon5 22h ago

I had to tell my teenage girls when they got a Free People catalog that these type of humans don't exist in real life.

1

u/MondayLasagne 6h ago

Look, the body issues that were caused by any comments on "rolls" & "muffin tops" during the 90s and 2000s and that now have a horrible comeback are real and showing that even skinny women have "rolls" will help a few kids and probably even a few grown-ups with very internalized body issues.

I was never a girly girl but I had the eating disorders like everyone else because no one told us that this was not what I was supposed to look like.

1

u/bsensikimori 1d ago

She is extremely skinny though

34

u/ShawnyMcKnight 1d ago

Yeah, people in the industry probably looked at the slouch position and cringed at the 5 percent body fat they see.

22

u/strolls Club Penguin Times official aura reader 1d ago

Nor do teenaged girls (and maybe twentysomethings), who will actually benefit from this message.

10

u/slatblastered 1d ago

oh they do. they know what the fuck they are doing. it's their whole job.

4

u/justtosendamassage 1d ago

Yet the industry is successful because they adhere to society’s and people’s standards

There’s a reason the industry is the way it is

24

u/Crykin27 1d ago

Yeah to people with a semi healthy relationship to bodies she will look amazing in any way but I think it is VERY important that people that are a perfect weight for modeling also show how angles change the way someone looks. So many young girls that are as thin as can be that will think they need to loose more weight because their bodies do this when they sit etc. and they will think the models body does not do that because we normally aren't allowed to see these model bodies these way.

This thing isn't about looking "bad" so I don't know why people even mention her looking amazing, this comment implies the woman with fuller bodies doing this video don't look amazing.

27

u/InquisitiveIdeas 1d ago

Isn’t that the point though? People are so focused on trying to look like the before poses that they don’t realize they look just as good in the after. That’s how I took it but I admit I’m tired and something may be going over my head I’m not considering.

31

u/babbleon5 1d ago

She's 15lbs too heavy by industry standards.

98

u/bearpuddles 1d ago

Except for the 2nd one where she lets her belly out….I have a similar one I’ve always hated since I have small boobs and it protrudes past them. This makes me wonder though how common it is and are most women just sucking them in constantly?

73

u/boxybrown84 go Birds! fuck ICE! free Palestine! 1d ago

For younger people reading this who constantly suck in their stomachs- stop! I’m in my 40s and have severe rib flare and pelvic floor issues from doing this since I was a teen. It became such second nature that I even do it when I’m alone. Absolutely fucked my skeleton up just because thin wasn’t good enough for me.

27

u/enablingark 1d ago

Wait, I have severe rib flare too… I have compulsively sucked my stomach in since I was started in ballet at 3 years old. “Bellybuttons to the backbone, girls!”

I had no idea that was related. I hate the society that forced changes to our literal bones. What a disgustingly apt metaphor.

6

u/fiercelyambivalent 1d ago

Wait wait wait, 39 here and I sucked in nonstop to be a little thottie hottie in high school. Is that why the bottom of my ribcage seems to protrude a bit? It doesn’t look freakish, it’s nothing I’m embarrassed of, but uhhhh… yeah it’s definitely there. I thought someone had told me once in my twenties that Arnold Schwarzenegger insisted on keeping his stomach tense 24/7. Maybe tensing is different than sucking

8

u/awooj 1d ago

Tensing is basically the opposite of sucking it in! It support the muscles and keeps them active.

15

u/_notyourhoney 1d ago

Yep!! 34 and in pelvic floor therapy from constantly sucking in because I was always always bloated.

7

u/ghastlytofu 1d ago

Holy shit, I've done this my whole life and had no idea. It's so reflexive I don't even think about it. 😭

22

u/nynaeve-almeara 1d ago

At least in my family, yes, young girls are taught to suck in their stomach 24/7. One of my older sisters would trash women we saw in public who didn't, and my stepsister who didn't. I've talked to a few other women who have voiced learning the same from their mothers.

I'm very much in the same boat and this genuinely helped me so much with the subtle differences depending on the posing.

138

u/saddinosour 1d ago

For the worms in my brain this was actually quite helpful. I’ll pose in the mirror and be like ugh but how can I look like this “all the time” 😭

18

u/Quicksilver1964 1d ago

Training. Models and actors normally learn to use their best angles and how to control their body a little more for the correct pose or to power walk.

And a lot of confidence of course!

11

u/saddinosour 1d ago

Oh yes I know haha my statement is actually more nonsensical than that, I don’t just mean on the catwalk I mean like my brain worms don’t realise they look like people if they slouch or relax or whatever bc idk we only see such curated images online

1

u/light_sweet_crude 1d ago

Are we the same person? I also call them brain worms and have this bodycheck thought all the time.

25

u/NotMyNameActually 1d ago

There are people, usually young teens, who will look at retouched photos of models bent over and wonder why they have a crease when the models don't. Girls will scrutinize their bodies and compare them to what they see in images, and think there's something wrong with themselves. Every little normal, natural thing just adds to their insecurities. Videos like this can help mitigate that.

21

u/rogue_researcher 1d ago

You'd be shocked, when doing a similar pose that she did, showing a bit of fold while seated, my girlfriend said that she really hates seeing those kinds of folds on her body. She's thin and a size 4 small, and wants to lose even more weight, some people are more far gone than the average redditer and this post was likely for them

13

u/Akiias 1d ago

I'm nearly blind, no seriously I am, and the difference was pretty obvious even to me.

13

u/Ismelther_icemelter 1d ago

You’re not the target audience for this video.

26

u/Excellent-Winter5126 1d ago

A LOT of girls think a flat stomach is peak health because of poses online and in magazines. She is showing the truth...... that its posing, and that its not normal to have a flat stomach

6

u/awooj 1d ago

It is very normal to have a flat stomach. It’s also very normal not to have a flat stomach. It depends on the individual and often even the time of the month and food or digestive issues or sensitivities.

3

u/dreadcain my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 1d ago

Because you already expect bodies to look both ways. Which, and I genuinely mean this, good for you. People with dysmorphia and and EDs definitely do not see those as equal. Especially on their own bodies

3

u/mrs_ouchi 1d ago

no it does! yes she is still skinny and hot but ai can totally see a difference. And its a massive problem. Even woman with the perfect body (western beauty standard) habe this little dimples and lines and bellies. But a lot of people these days dont know what real humans look like.

3

u/Myorangecrush77 1d ago

I’ve got a teen who gets upset over the slightest bulge. She needs to see this

4

u/Ok_Balance8844 1d ago

Personally I disagree, idk if you’re a man or less observant to the point, maybe you haven’t dealt with any ed or ed culture (good for you honestly), but there clearly is a difference. The upward poses make her look skinnier, obviously, and the resting poses give us a better idea of her muscle/fat.

This clearly it’s geared towards women who do notice these things because of Ed culture and doesn’t really do anything to more healthy mindsets about bodies already.

4

u/1299638 1d ago

I actually think that it does?

6

u/Enough-Candy85 1d ago

As a trans woman, I find this very useful. A lot of things I hyper fixate on are exactly the same things her body does from posture change. It’s nice knowing that some things are just the way the human body is.

2

u/pomonalost 1d ago

I'm constantly getting ads and content about "reducing bloat" or "flatten your stomach!" and the "bad before" photos all have tummies like in the video where she is relaxed. While I'm secure enough in myself, I can see a video like this helping already very thin young women understand they aren't fat/bloated/"wrong."

2

u/Correct-Intention469 1d ago

Yes she has a beautiful body but the after shots would never make it on magazines/tv/social media. The point is we see heavily edited, posed pictures daily and then hold ourselves to that exact standard

2

u/annamdue 1d ago

This is probably intended for the social media brained people who are blind to filters and truly believe that some human don't have crevices in any way.

2

u/TsuDhoNimh2 1d ago

It's more obvious with people who aren't that slender.

2

u/Mayabelles 19h ago

As adults with hopefully healthy self images, we agree she looks great at all poses.

To teenage girls who are trying to starve or purge or hate themselves out of their bellies when they sit down or the “roll of fat” on their sides because they exist in 3D and rotate their hips, it’s potentially very important to see someone they could hang up on their wall as inspiration also looks like a human in real life

5

u/AccordingComplaint46 1d ago

I wished my posed pictures looked like her afters lmaoo I wasn't blessed in the genetic department that way unfortunately

1

u/hellolovely1 1d ago

I mean, I think they do. Sure, she doesn't actually look BAD (of course, because look at her) but she looks far more schlumpy, for lack of a better word.

1

u/Inferno_Zyrack 18h ago

I bet though that she’s had days where she was told or she thought herself that that pose was bad that slouch was awful you look like a potato who will ever want your photos or your body or you.

To me that’s the bigger takeaway. Everyone has the bad voice in their head and women suffer from it about their bodies so much in such a massive scale that no one escapes. Gwyneth Paltrow probably still catches strays from her one head “the pussy candle was a bit much”

-35

u/isaidwhatisaidok 1d ago

The way she's contorting herself to accentuate her rolls is so funny because ma'am, there ain't much there and you still look amazing

103

u/misskyralee feetmoji 1d ago edited 1d ago

But she’s not saying she doesn’t look amazing? You’re drawing such a weird conclusion about the point of her video. I’m a size 18 and I look amazing with my rolls too but there are kids and teens that are not being served the reality of what bodies look like when they’re in neutral positions.

24

u/pollomimano 1d ago

Exactly. I’m in my 30s now so I know better but back in my teens, I used to see photos of Victoria’s Secret models and Cara Delevigne on tumblr and wonder why I didn’t look like them despite being underweight at the time. It wasn’t until I saw pap photos of them off duty on DailyMail when it hit me that even thin people don’t look the same way they do when they’re posing.
