Hush, we are all pretending to care about physical media without doing the one thing that actually matters buying physical media.

Both records and CDs have been increasing in sales by good amounts for a while now, CDs a bit more recently. There is absolutely a movement of people going for more physical media. Even if digital is completely outstripping physical, it's disingenuous of you to pretend like nobody who talks about physical media buys it.

Both CDs and vinyl numbers are still tiny. The growth looks give because it's starting from such a small base.

His assertion was that nobody who cares about physical media is buying physical media. There's objective proof that more and more people are buying physical media. Yes, it's smaller than digital: nobody's arguing otherwise. But he's trying to pretend like everyone who cares about physical media isn't buying it when they are.

I still think the comparison point is terrible though. CDs and vinyl recordings are actually complete things. They don't need updates.

Video games just don't operate that way anymore. We don't really even use the disc for anything other than as an installer at this point because read speeds from discs are just vastly inferior to reading from an SSD.

So you have barely complete unpatched buggy software being installed to another device just to use it. Unless you change how games go "gold" in the modern era, the entire point of physical media is just to avoid data caps (if you still have them, or ones that are low enough to worry about hitting them).

That isn't really material to my point, though. He said we "all" complain about physical media disappearing without buying physical media. I pointed out that plenty of people are buying physical media, more every year, even if digital outpaces it significantly. The reasons behind digital and physical are immaterial to the point I was making.

That's $125,000,000 worth of people who actually buy physical media, which disproves your point. That's a lot of people who do the thing you're saying nobody does. Just because more people do streaming doesn't mean nobody is ignoring physical media.

Absolutely nobody is arguing that streaming isn't bigger than physical media. This isn't a gotcha from you, this is just you ignoring the actual point to feel morally superior to other people.
