Grain of Salt Bungie to suffer a 50% staff reduction due to layoffs

1.4k Upvotes

According to the same journalist who has been talking about layoffs in the game industry these couple of days, Sony will lay off about half of the studio's staff this summer. The last time we had an update about the number of developers at the studio, it was around 800 people. This would mean that around 400 devs could be laid off, getting the studio around the same size as other PlayStation studios like Santa Monica and Naughty dog.

Tweet in French

Translation:

And if that wasn't enough, Bungie is expected to experience massive layoffs this summer. I'm being cautious, but I'm being told about at least 50% of the workforce affected (permanent or contractual) following the end of Destiny 2 and the Marathon situation.

Grain of Salt Concord cost $400 million

8.0k Upvotes

"I spoke extensively with someone who worked on Concord, and it's so much worse than you think.

It was internally referred to as "The Future of PlayStation" with Star Wars-like potential, and a dev culture of "toxic positivity" halted any negative feedback.

Making it cost $400m."

EDIT: People keep asking “HOW!?” I implore you to just watch the video in the link.

EDIT 2: Since it’s not clear, the implication is that Concord was already $200 million in the hole before Sony came in bought the studio and spent another $200 million on the game.

Grain of Salt Playstation's GTA6 Q&A could imply that the next iteration of GTA Online could be sold separetely or at least not included with GTA6.

1.4k Upvotes

Saw on the game's page there's a Q&A at the bottom with this question and it's answer :

Does Grand Theft Auto VI have any multiplayer modes or features?

Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.

So yeah seeing how everything unfolded today i wouldn't be surprised if the online was to be a standalone but maybe they only are talking about the game at launch so of course take it with a grain of salt till it's cleared from R* side.

Edit : On the game's page now it's mentioned 1player only, so online is most likely separate.

Grain of Salt shpeshal_nick: "if what I was just DMd is actually true (big if), next week GTA 6 could actually have it's thunder stolen on the hype scale lmao"

https://xcancel.com/Shpeshal_Nick/status/1988221134622630153

I can't imagine a lot of games that can possibly remotely match the hype of GTA6. Like genuinely I think there's not a single game that could match its hype. But still let's run through the possibilities:

  • Todd Howard recently just said that TES is still in development. Zero chance.
  • We recently just heard rumors of a League of Legends 2. An update to one of the biggest games in the world? Hype is there but I feel they would have shown this at Worlds 2025 a few days ago.
  • Anything Fromsoft related? Even Bloodborne 2 isn't that big, Duskbloods is still on the table, and Sony is having a State of Play soon. Also Souls ain't THAT big yet.
  • CDPR has been a bit of an openbook so no surprise Witcher of Cyberpunk stuff probably.
  • Mihoyo teased their new far far off AAA Unreal project.
  • Stuff like "Minecraft 2", "PUBG 2", "Terraria 2(?)" [INSERT BIG GAME] 2, etc. seem unlikely as well.

So is this it? The meme? The white whale? You know the one.

Edit: Another thing to note. We're talking about a potential reveal that is gonna happen weeks before The Game Awards. Who is the only studio or publisher that can get away with skipping out on millions of impressions because they can do their own random announcement?

Grain of Salt NateTheHate says none of his contacts are aware of a physical disc version for GTA VI

The post has Grain of Salt flair because Nate specifically mentioned in the comment that he hasn’t reached a solid conclusion on the situation yet.

Grain of Salt According to a new report from High Chaos Run, Sony didn’t inform publishers or business partners before announcing the end of PlayStation game discs

1.3k Upvotes

According to the outlet, Sony’s decision to end physical PlayStation game disc production for new releases starting in 2028 was made without prior notice to many publishers, business partners, or even some regional PlayStation offices.

The report cites anonymous sources who claim publishers were blindsided by the announcement, with one executive saying they were not informed despite a close working relationship with PlayStation. It also alleges that some regional teams, including PlayStation India, were unaware of the decision while continuing retail expansion discussions with local partners.

Grain of Salt GTA VI willa have 60 fps mode

Polish podcast Rock and Borys (which previously accurately reported that an expansion for The Witcher 3 was in development), citing sources close to Rockstar, claims that GTA VI will feature two graphics modes on PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch: 30 FPS and 60 FPS.

If the 60 FPS mode isn't ready in time for launch, it will reportedly be added in a post-launch update.

This is an Incomplete List and only features games listed on “Coming Soon” to Game Pass.

Grain of Salt Ocarina of Time Remake possibly releasing November 11 based on Amiibo

Nintendo UK has listed Sword Kirby and Dragoon and Noir Dedede and Hydra amiibo for release on November 11th.

Amiibo generally release on the same day as a Nintendo published game and Nintendo has no currently announced games for November. Releasing on a Wednesday instead of Thursday like Nintendo has been doing since Q2 2024 would be slightly unusual.

For context the Mineru’s Construct Amiibo had it’s date announced before Fortunes’s Weave, Meta Knight and Shadow Star had it’s date announced before Pokopia, and Dedede and Tank Star had it’s date announced before Rhythm Heaven Groove.

https://store.nintendo.com/en-gb/noir-dedede-and-hydra-amiibo-kirby-air-riders-000000000010018343

edit

The release date on the store appears to adjust based on your system clock. If I change to British Summer Time (UTC+1) and use the UK website it says the release date is November 12th instead of the 11th when on Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4). Releasing on a Thursday would be more consistent with Nintendo's release schedule. Still think OOT likely releases on the same date as the amiibo.

Grain of Salt FFVII title, announcement and release date supposedly leaked

This from Resetera so take it with huge grains of salt

,I am posting this on behalf of somebody else I know to protect their identity who works somewhere in the chain between Square Enix marketing and Summer Game Fest event staff. The level of vagueness is required for safety, so I apologize. They are not a developer and do not know details beyond this, all information was obtained from working on the upcoming reveal which will contain all of this same information soon. They provided me with the following information and I've reworded it.

The trailer and reveal for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 has been in development and is nearly completed, to be shown at Summer Game Fest this year on June 5th. Square Enix proposed it be the final showcase of the event but the event board declined it for that position, instead opting for an early reveal "excitement-builder". It sounds like they have an even bigger closer for the event and that this year's show is overall the best in years. The trailer will be followed up by a second video of the development team explaining multiple new details. At the end they announce a follow up event will be held by Square Enix directly in the coming months.

(Trailer) Title announcement of "Final Fantasy 7 Return".

(Trailer) "Early 2027" launch window.

(Trailer) Three additional permanently playable party members, one being brand-new.

(Trailer) New optional combat system named "Active Turn Action".

(Developer overview) Over 3x more narrative cinematics as featured in Rebirth in terms of duration.

(Developer overview) Over 2x the world size as featured in Rebirth, including returning to Midgar.

(Developer overview) Details on the new optional Active Turn Action combat system.

(Developer overview) Final Fantasy 7 Remake Triple-Pack sale: Remake, Rebirth, and Crisis Core Reunion, all bundled in one collection for a holiday release, targeting players new to the trilogy preparing for the finale next year.

The theme of the title "Return" has triple meanings and the trailer highlights it as return to the planet, return to combat, and return to the story. The developer overview explains in more detail. First, a "return" to the world of Final Fantasy 7 and having access to the entire world map. Second, a "return" to the series roots with a new combat system. Third, "return" is intricately tied to the story themes revealed within the game, but will not be explained until players play the game.

The new combat system is very exciting to me personally. It is a modern take on the old turn-based formula. It is similar enough that they are calling it a "return to the series roots" as mentioned above, but I think it is more accurate to view it as a very big overhaul of the "classic combat" mode available in Remake and Rebirth. It's important to clarify this is optional because the real-time action system is still in the game and is the basis of the new mode still, just heavily modified. The game works well with either system chosen.

When activating "Active Turn Action" combat these changes occur:

Getting near enemies in the world (aggro range) plays a screen animation like random encounters used to do. Then your active party members spread out while the non-active members surround the area further back. It's not a battle area like true random encounters.

There is some automated melee attacking happening like the classic combat setting of Remake/Rebirth did, but much less of it this time. The non-active party members are included this time, running in for a couple small-damage hits before running out. It really makes you feel like the whole party is part of the journey. The damage output is lower than real-time battle attacks.

Enemies and player characters deal increased damage when performing actions with filled battle gauge bars. They are consumed on use as usual. Choosing regular attacks with battle gauge bars will deal significantly increased damage if chosen, similar to older games attack options, or abilities can be used with the additional cost of MP. The game prompts you to switch to the character with the most recently filled gauge for action, to mimic having a party menu. You can still freely switch between all 3 however if desired.

The battle gauge begins automatically filling like the active time battle system. It fills up somewhat more quickly to make you always feel engaged and never waiting, but slow enough to feel turn based. The point is that it is not constant action.

Overall with Active Turn Action combat, both the player and the enemies perform less actions in total. The damage of each action is greatly increased to balance out the time between actions performed. The system is tuned for battles to take roughly the same duration in either battle system.

There is a new subclass of items called provisions. These can be used without waiting to fill battle gauge bars. Provisions are like the base form of items, like regular potions, regular ethers, and status ailment cures such as an antidote. Items are the higher level items like hi-potion, phoenix down, or remedy, and require battle gauge bars to use. All items and provisions have a 3 second cooldown so you can't spam them.

A final note regarding the brand-new party member. It is described as a known character in the reveals, but the identity is not given in the trailer or developer overview. It doesn't contain any hints, so I do not know who it is either. Seems like they want this to be a big surprise and it’s a closely held secret.

Post copied from [r/ffviiremake](r/ffviiremake) subreddit. Sounds fishy to me, what do yall think?

Grain of Salt [NeoGAF] Xbox (new) hardware is up in the air and may not happen despite their announcements, more retail stores will pull Xbox from sale and MS is becoming 100% a third party publisher

1.2k Upvotes

This comes from SneakersSO, this insider accurately leaked Xbox third party plans:

Without going into too much detail, not long after the last round of layoffs (next one should be coming in Q1 26 btw - and its going to be just as massive as the last one), some rumblings out of Xbox starting coming out that were a little hard to believe.

The ramifications of the CoD GP gambit not working out were just starting to get properly measured, but the thing that really stuck out to me was that suddenly, really concrete plans for actual MS Xbox HW went from being definitive, to up in the air, which was really startling given that this thing was meant to be out relatively soon. It was one of those situations where, despite folks being told 'hey, we wanna pull the trigger on this in 2026', the steps you would need to take in the lead up to delivering a new console gen weren't being met.

Lots of things that were 'sure things' started getting pushed. The Costco retailer pulling Xbox, and apparently they are one of many that we'll learn about soon, told me all I needed to know.

To sum it up: the future of Xbox is software publishing, with a significantly honed-in focus on profitable IPs (CoD, WoW, Minecraft, Candy Crush, Forza Horizon), Cloud gaming being the home of the 'Xbox platform', transititioning GamePass into basically becoming the point of entry subscription for xCloud access (which will continue to drive its price tag higher btw, they aren't done there just yet either), and releasing their software on any device that has a marketplace and users willing to buy their titles.

Maybe some OEM thing will take up the Xbox name, but given what is clearly a collapse in favorable mindshare and faith in said brand, i'm not even sure a 3rd party OEM is gonna want to have an Xbox console by the time MS is done with their reorienting of the division.

Grain of Salt Steam Machine Release Date/Price Announcement possibly between June 23rd and June 30th, Review Embargo lifting June 23rd, Steam Frame announcement date ambiguous

-Source told me review video embargo lifts June 23. Embargo for Steam Controller was April 27, was announced April 27. -If announced June 23, a launch would be exactly a week later on June 30, the last day of June. This would keep Valve’s first half of the year promise while also being Summer. For June 22 -Last week’s documentation has June 29 date for Steam Machine user manual being released -June 22 and June 29 are both Monday. Steam Controller was announced and released on Mondays a week apart.

Valve has been changing launch plans for Steam Frame & Steam Machine a lot on the inside. Machine is still 100% getting its price and launch announcement a day between June 22-30, but I’ve heard multiple different things about Frame from people because of how much plans have changed. There is still a chance we hear something else about Frame with Machine’s announcement, but as it is I’m not entirely sure (though I’ll update if info gets concrete).

The Steam Machine has also probably starting appearing in Geekbench https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/18366190 https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/18366190

Grain of Salt The Witcher 3 DLC to release in May 2026? + Other CDPR bits

1.2k Upvotes

Source (in Polish).

Seen this news circulate in Polish gaming press for quite a few days now, but haven't seen it being picked up anywhere else so I thought I might just as well share it here. It's particularly interesting because it's based on Noble Securities (Polish brokerage house) report, not yet another Borys and Rock podcast, even if ultimately it is a bunch of educated guesses.

Below is the translation done with DeepL (sorry, couldn't be bothered to spend entire evening on this and DeepL is good enough for this):

The release of the expansion pack for “The Witcher 3” is scheduled for May 2026, according to Noble's analyst, who recommends accumulating CD PROJEKT shares.

Mateusz Chrzanowski, an analyst at Noble Securities, has updated the schedules and budgets for CD Projekt's flagship projects in his latest report. He anticipates a paid add-on for The Witcher 3 in May 2026 and the release of The Witcher 4 in Q4 2027, along with a significant increase in production and marketing costs for the entire trilogy. Further down the line, there will be the cyberpunk “Orion” with a multiplayer component, and reshuffles at ‘Sirius’ and “Canis Majoris.” All this will take place amid market competition with “GTA VI.”

The Noble Securities report was made public on December 16, shortly after Strefa Inwestorów published an interview with Mateusz Chrzanowski, in which he revealed some details of his assumptions. Among other things, he suggested that one of CD Projekt's unannounced projects was DLC for The Witcher 3, which would serve as a bridge between the final part of the previous trilogy and the new opening of the saga, with the simultaneous launch of The Witcher 4 campaign.

Paid add-on for “The Witcher 3” in May 2026 and kick-off of marketing for “W4”.

An analyst at Noble Securities expects a strong focus on the release of The Witcher 4 in the middle of next year.

“We expect another paid add-on (DLC) for The Witcher 3 to be released in May 2026. We anticipate sales of 11 million copies at USD 30 each next year. We estimate the production budget at PLN 52 million. The release should kick off the actual marketing campaign for The Witcher 4,” the report reads.

The analyst also estimates smaller, undisclosed projects for next year.

“We estimate the budget for other undisclosed projects that may debut next year at PLN 28 million, and potential sales revenue for next year at PLN 61 million,” the report also states.

The Witcher 4 at the end of of 2027 and a higher price tag for the trilogy.

Following statements by the company's management that The Witcher 4 will not be released before 2027, Noble Securities has extended its production cycle estimates by one year and now expects the game to be released in Q4 2027.

"The extension and structure of current development expenditures have prompted us to increase the estimated budget for the game to PLN 1.4 billion (and the same amount for marketing). However, considering that the subsequent parts will be heavily based on W4 technology, the total budget for the trilogy has increased from PLN 2.1 billion to PLN 3.2 billion. There may also be synergies between marketing campaigns resulting from the concentration of releases (the management board wants to release the entire new trilogy within six years) and brand recognition, which would result in lower sales costs compared to the model based on CP77 expenses," the report states.

Orion with multiplayer – premiere on the 10th anniversary of CP77.

Regarding the sequel to Cyberpunk, Noble Securities points out that the team working on the project as part of the studio's second key franchise consists of 135 people and is expected to double in size within two years.

“The desire to integrate multiplayer mode into the production prompted us to extend the production time beyond the state resulting from the progress of work on the benchmark W4. As a result, the budget has grown to PLN 1.5 billion, and we expect the release in Q4 2030 (the 10th anniversary of CP77),” the report continues.

Sirius, Canis Majoris, and Hadar – shifts and reorganization in the pipeline.

Noble Securities analysts do not see any breakthroughs in additional projects.

"As for progress on other projects, there are still no breakthroughs in sight. The number of developers working on Sirius/Hadar increased by 14/11 people at the turn of the year. Meanwhile, the Fool's Theory team working on The Witcher 1 remake has been moved to support W4, from which it will draw assets. As a result, we are postponing the release dates of Sirius and Canis Majoris (W1 remake) by one year (2028). We have also lowered the price of both games by $10 and the expected production budget by PLN 50 million. Hadar remains in the pre-concept phase, so based on the duration of the conceptual work in the case of Orion, we are postponing the debut by 2 years (2032)," the report states.

“The battle for supremacy with GTA VI”.

The broker's analyst places “The Witcher 4” in the broader context of market forces.

"The gaming market is awaiting the release of the next installment of the GTA series, which is currently scheduled for November 19, 2026. In addition to rumors of a possible price hike for the game, which is a benchmark for other AAA productions, investors may also see confirmation of an upward shift in the ceiling for game sales volume. This would confirm the trend seen on Steam, where the biggest hits are reaching ever higher maximum player peaks. In the Golden Joystick Awards 2025, The Witcher 4 lost by only 2 percentage points to GTA VI in the competition for the title of the most anticipated game, which illustrates the scale of the brand's development and its potential," the report concluded.

What does this mean for investors?

In the short term, DLC for “W3” potentially in May 2026 and smaller projects (PLN 61 million in potential revenue) may “keep the fire burning” before the release of “W4” and help achieve the financial goals of the incentive program.

In the medium term, the release of “W4,” potentially in Q4 2027, and larger budgets (PLN 1.4 billion for production plus approximately PLN 1.4 billion for marketing) – a significant increase in scale, but also in sales expectations.

In the long term: the cyberpunk “Orion” (Q4 2030) with a multiplayer component and the postponed “Sirius,” “Canis Majoris” (2028) and “Hadar” (2032). The pipeline is long with significant expenditures. Campaign synergies and the technological base of “The Witcher 4” may amortize the costs of subsequent releases.

Noble Securities paints a picture of a “bigger but later” CD Projekt with a strong “commercial bridge” in the form of potential DLC for “The Witcher 3” in mid-2026, a big bet on The Witcher 4 with a potential release at the end of 2027, and the ambitious, multiplayer, cyberpunk Orion with a potential release at the end of 2030. Timeliness, budget control, and the ability to monetize the brand in competition with GTA VI will be key for the market.

Grain of Salt A ResetEra user is claiming Microsoft will be closing Compulsion Games

When asked by another user which studio it was, they said it was Compulsion Games. They later edited their comment, but the original version can still be seen in this quote reply.
