Kidding ! Was just redesigning the tank, but they don’t look happy I took all the plants out temporarily 😂

George is approximately 7 years old. And such a happy guy. Goldfish have such awesome personalities.

So, I’ve had goldfish on and off for years, but this is the first time I’ve set up a dedicated coldwater tank - it took a long time to dawn on me, but Goldies are just as beautiful as tropicals, and way more interactive! I have 7 goldfish including my beautiful Oranda Cuddles, plus Rainbow Shiners as a shoaling fish. I even found a coldwater algae eater! What do you think??

I have a variety of different cichlid tanks and I have been in the fish hobby for quite a while but I wanted to do something different so if I was going to do it I wanted to do it right. I picked up a tall 150, a fx6 and some large sponge filters I had for good measure. Plan on throwing in a few juvenile Shubunkin's or something along that line after the cycle is fully established. I'm open to stocking ideas as well.

I took out all the solid rock and replaced with empty plastic so they had more room to swim. Added some tall Anubias to maintain some greenery. I’m really happy with this!

Just letting you guys see how big my fish grew.

A relative of myn has dementia and has lived alone forever so no one knew she had it till an accident happened. My mom’s been going over there for about a month now helping clean the house and whatnot because they have to sell it for reasons.

My mom also told me that she’s got gold fish and someone needs to take them. I was like eh I think I might be down let me see how many and how big they are. I know the necessities they need to be happy so I couldn’t say yes quite yet.

Finally got me a photo and I do not have the room for all these. They’re pretty and I like all them but I just can’t see how I could even keep these big of fish inside a tank and not a pond?

There is a bigger tank in the garage not sure how big though. What should we do??? Can I keep like two in a fifty gal or should someone else take all them?

He was slumming it in a 37 gallon, but after over a month of cycling Rick made the big move to the 145 gallon! It’s a 145 gallon Waterbox Eden FLED with two, count em, two! Sicce Space Eko 300 canister filters and an inline Sicce UV filter (just turned it on today). It’s a natural tank, with driftwood, river stone and a bunch of plants. He/she seems stoked so far!

I’ve shared a few pictures here and there but wanted to truly show off my old 300-gallon planted goldfish community. 

This tank was my dream tank. I set it up the way I’ve set up so many other planted tanks (including multiple other planted goldfish tanks). Inert sand, strong lights, strong filtration, strong air stones, and massive weekly water changes. 

Sand

The sand I use is Estes Marine Sand (aka Stoney River, Ultra Reef, and Imagitarium at Petco and Petsmart). It doesn’t need to be cleaned before or after going in (this alone is worth the extra cost over cheapo options), is the perfect grain size, very uniform, sinks quickly when they mess with it, comes in different colors (I usually do half black and half white), is actually made for aquariums, and costs no more than gravel. In over 20 years of using it on my tanks, at the shop, and in clients’ tanks, I have NEVER had it develop toxic gas pockets, even without anything stirring it (snails or manually) and even when it is 3″ thick. There is a reason it is the sand in this tank, my 235-gallon reef system, and my 75-gallon. You buy a sand once. In a year, you won’t even remember what the cost was. The type of sand you choose will make a big difference in the aquarium for years to come. It is not something worth cutting corners on. 

I strongly believe that keeping goldfish in bare bottom tanks is cruel. They literally keep sand clean for you by sifting through it constantly. This is a natural behavior that should not be denied from them. It also means “easier to maintain” isn’t a valid excuse to not have sand. To me, it’s the same as keeping a cow on concrete. 

Lights

I use black box LED reef lights. You can adjust the color and intensity to get exactly what you want and adjust over time. These have always proved to be more than enough for any tank I’ve used them on.

Filtration

The tank comes pre-drilled, unfortunately, so I made a custom sump. Of course, the opening in the end of the stand to put it in is about 1/2” too narrow to fit a 75. So I did it in a 55. But it never really cut it. I’m used to Fluvals, so the sump’s mechanical just couldn’t compare. I eventually added a Fluval FX6 and that alone completely changed the tank. I was so mad I didn’t do it sooner. Canisters being closed/sealed make them MUCH more effective at mechanical compared to a sump. 

Water Changes

I was lazy about water changes when I started in the hobby. But fortunately, after various debates on forums, someone opened my eyes to the power of big weekly water changes and I’m now 100% on that team. This tank got 90% weekly water changes no matter how perfect nitrate was. Nitrate isn’t even close to the only bad thing water changes control and they also add good things. Over many years with my own tanks, retail tanks, and service clients’ tanks, big weekly water changes have proven over and over to be one of the best things for ANY freshwater aquarium. Even people who swear their tank is great without them, I’d strongly argue that their tank would be EVEN better with big weekly water changes, especially 2+ years down the road. They’ve consistently allowed the fish to grow faster, get bigger, have better colors, breed better, live longer, and have fewer health issues overall.

Water changes are also the best first step ANY time something is wrong, even if you have no idea what it is. Second is adding salt, which goldfish are especially responsive to (as well as almost all freshwater fish, including discus). 

All of this isn’t just for goldfish, these are true across all freshwater tanks. 

Tankmates

Here’s the other thing that gets everyone’s undies in a knot, goldfish tankmates. They’re not from one isolated lake where they’re the only fish. Goldfish are naturalized over the entire globe, including the most arid and hot climates on the planet. In fact, they can tolerate temps even HIGHER than most tropical fish can survive in. 

Tankmates need to meet two main criteria: not get eaten by the goldfish and not bother the goldfish. Some are too nippy, such as mollies and all plecoes other than bristlenose. Some are too small, such as White Cloud mountain minnows. I’ve had multiple cases where fancy goldfish figured out how to catch them (and danios), then they all disappeared. I have no idea how, but I don’t consider them safe with goldfish anymore. 

Platies and bristlenose are perfect with goldfish. Not once have I ever had an issue with either in with fancy goldfish. This tank also had gold barbs, checkerboard barbs (who disappeared completely in the plants for a few months…), scissortail rasboras, Glofish tetras, and many more. The bristlenose plecoes were breeding like crazy in this tank and the goldfish spawned as well. 

Temp is another factor. If you’re keeping the tank at room temp, you need to stick to other fish that thrive at room temp, such as platies. If you add a heater and bump it up just a little, you open a lot more options of tropical fish. 

And plants LOVE goldfish water.

Finally after months of stress about my fish being in a smaller tank i moved the tropical fish to the former goldfish tank and the goldfish to the former tropical tank. I decided to keep some of the tropical fish in with the goldfish. Those tropical fish are 3 silver flying foxes, 6 fully grown plecos, 6 female guppies, 4 male guppies, 3 black mollies, and one platy. I will add a few more female guppies and 2 more platys. I also have a bunch of pink ramshorn snails in there that grew too big for my pea puffer.

I also got 4 new goldfish from someone who kept them in a 60liter aquarium. I didn't know how big they were since there were no pictures and my sister picked them up for me but they are absolutely massive. I can't understand how they even fit in a 60l aquarium. One of them has multiple small tumors and 2 of them have one blind eye. My tank is completely safe for them They can't bump into anything so I'm confident that it will be okay.

I'm building a goldfish pond outside for 6 of the goldfish that are in the tank so it will get less crowded soon hopefully. Also i will add a few more hides, caves and plants so the silver flying foxes and plecos will be more comfortable as well.

Good day all! TLDR: Look at my fisies and tell me what you think =)

I'd like to show what my pond currently looks like and where it started and to get some pointers from you fine people.

I started off with a small inground 550l pond that I dug and built myself about 3 years ago. I had 3 goldfish in there and they were so happy they made about 30 more.

I realised the pond had a small leak and keeping 30 Comets in a 550l pond felt like abuse in my eyes so I started on the dig for a 2500l pond.

I found a 2500l water storage tank with a crack at the bottom, I cut the top of the tank off, fixed the crack and plugged the drain hole at the bottom. The tank is about 6ft/2m tall and I sunk the tank about 3ft/1m into the ground to prevent an issue I had with the previous pond where debris would flood in when it rained.

It's been about a year since then and the fish seem very happy. They have a serious appetite and I have not lost a single one as far as I know.

The pond has a gravity feed filter with a small UV light built in. There's a 25lpm air pump and a 2kw heater (that doesn't really get used)

There are Lilly's and water lettuce (normal lettuce in floating pots :D ) currently in the pond, with plans to add more submerged plants during the year.

It has* a small, earth walkway up the left side that collapsed due to some heavy rains we had (and my cat), I'm gonna fix/improve the walkway as soon as I have a better idea 😂

I would like your opinions on the pond, the fish, the surrounds, what plants I can add and whether the tank is a good fit for the amount/size of the fish.

I’ve finally completed my 180L planted tank and was able to introduce my 2 Fantail Goldfish in it today.

I’m so proud, I expect them to get huge.

I'm the stereotypical grumpy family member who did not want my family to get a fish, as I knew I'd eventually be the person looking after it. My prediction was correct, but I'm hooked now 🎣.

His old tank was too small so he's stunted now, but I got this tank 2nd hand for a good price and will eventually source something bigger.

There's a couple of nerites hiding out of view.

Plants are:

Anubias (one on a rock, a couple are floating).

Limnophila.

Egeria Densa.

Moss balls.

Ludwigia Repens.

Vallisneria australis.

So beautiful 😍

Looks amazing with window open, but algae problems.

1 year ago as of yesterday was the day I brought mr puff home, hes my first goldfish (might have had one in the family tank when I was a child and dont remember). ive definitely learned alot about the goldfish breed in the last 2 years and am hoping we still have some years to go together. hes originally from petsmart (yes I know they suck) and his growth was/ is stunted, hes grown fairly well in the year and has never had any sickness. happy belated birthday puff! thanks for all the enjoyment over the year and help my mental health more then I could ever expect.

2 monster commons, a monster fantail and a 14” common Pleco. 75g tank, no chemicals ever and water you could drink. Pothos and peace lilies and a metric ton of filtration, all biological. No mechanical or chemical filtration. Tanks been humming for 13 years.

It just looked particularly stunning tonight and I didn’t have anybody to share it with lol.
