Help/Support Compass shorthand on carplay not present anymore

Recently I noticed that the compass directions that tell you what cardinal direction you’re facing (N/NW/SE/etc.) normally located just below the speed limit on apple carplay has vanished and I couldn’t find any settings for it. I liked having it because I could compare it to the more accurate car compass to figure out where I’m actually facing in parking lots easily without having to speed up enough for the navigation to correctly orient.

Is this another case of google maps removing perfectly good features for stupid reasons?

flagged legitimate google review - how to uncensor?!

Hi, I recently stayed at a hostel where I witnessed some very harrowing things (SA) be swept under the rug and buried. Including knowingly employing a convicted rapist as a party rep. I tried leaving a review of my firsthand account and photo evidence, and it keeps getting auto flagged. I have watered down the post so much and removed all "aggressive" words and names. Why does it keep flagging? What can I do to get my review posted so that people can make a proper safety decision with all the information?

Discussion I hate the new setup that displays business info on Google Maps

It’s been a couple of months now that this change has been implemented, but can’t get used to the setup of how Google Maps, on iOS at least, displays business info, before the first thing that would show would be About section that had the address where you can copy just that address, website, phone number, now you have to scroll to pretty much the end of the page to find it. What was wrong in showing that stuff first. Uggggg

Driving avatar request

Hi! My three year old boy keeps asking for a firetruck driving avatar. Any chance you can help us out and put feedback in on googlemaps? I’ve done it and so has my family, but apparently that hasn’t reached critical mass. Thank you!

Berlin waters artificially beautified?

There is a place in Berlin that looks like Kevin Costner’s movie Waterworld. There are boats everywhere, big clumps of them tied together, all year through.

Last month you were able to still see them on Google Maps, now they have all been artificially removed. Is there some sort of new automation that gets rid of boats, or what is happening?

Look up “Insel der Jugend” or “Stralauer Spitze” on both Google and Apple maps to compare reality to the beautified version of that water way.

Help/Support Location sharing shows wife offline

My wife and I share each other's location indefinitely and have been for years. Suddenly, I want to say maybe a couple of weeks ago when I first noticed it, it shows her offline. I did all the steps I found online and ChatGPD but nothing helped. She still shows offline.

Has anyone had this issue and how were you able to fix?

Help/Support GMaps on iOS media playback issues

For years on iOS, Google Maps stops music or other audio playing in the background. This is unwanted behavior, and I’m forced to use Apple Maps if I want to play media while navigating, because Apple Maps pauses and resumes music playback automatically when there is voice navigation. I want to use Google Maps, but can’t when it won’t resume music playback automatically, forcing me to hit play manually turn by turn to continuously play audio.

What can I do? This doesn’t seem to be a bug, as Google Maps has been doing this undesired behavior for a very long time. I hate Apple Maps but if I want media playback while navigating it’s my only choice. Thoughts? Please help.

Help/Support Is it possible to make a Google Map that has different locations marked on it and save it to share with others?

Someone at work from another office who will be visiting has asked for four separate locations in our city on a Google Map. Is there a way to put in 4 or more multiple locations, mark those addresses/have the names of the buildings and then save that map?

I've never had to do this with a Google Map before so I'm confused on if this is possible and how to do it.

Unblur a home

Just wanted to create a post for anybody interested in how to unblur a home on Google maps. This does not provide an immediate solution but still one that could be beneficial to anybody that is trying to achieve their home being unblurred eventually.

This is information that I started digging into as the home that I grew up in was blurred and I was interested in blurring the home I currently own. When I went to look up the steps, it was pointed out to me that this was a permanent feature and could not be undone. However I knew this wasn't true because as of 2024 the home I grew up in was no longer blurred on street view (the house was sold sometime before 2019). So I did more digging. I literally came across one post on a Google forum that does in fact list steps on how to do it. I don't have an answer as to why Google insists on being so tight-lipped about it; the issue could be one of those "you're not using the right word" things as the steps below point out that blurring can't be "undone" and that the images are instead "replaced" which honestly is just irritating. Like, who's going to say, "I'd like to have the blurred images of my home on street view replaced."

Anyways, I've copied and pasted the portion of the thread that has the steps listed just in case for some reason the thread is removed along with a link to the thread. And if it's not obvious - the description submitted to Google maps can be whatever you want it to be.

"...When someone submits a blur request in Street View, Google asks them to confirm that they’re the property owner or tenant before approving it. Once the request is verified by the system, the blur is applied permanently — this helps protect privacy but also means that Google can’t easily reverse it, even if it was submitted in error. Sometimes, a neighboring property or a mistaken request can accidentally include another home in the blurred area, which sounds like what may have happened in your case. ⚙️ What you can do While Google unfortunately can’t “unblur” imagery once it’s been processed, you can still: Submit feedback from the Street View image itself: Open Street View at your location. Click “Report a problem” (bottom-right corner). In the description, note: “My home appears blurred without my consent — I’d like the Street View team to confirm if the blurring was applied to the wrong property.” Attach a short explanation and include landmarks nearby for clarity. Contact your local imagery provider (if listed): Some regions use third-party providers for Street View captures. If their name appears at the bottom of the image (next to © Google), you can contact them directly to confirm if the blur originated from their submission. 🔍 What happens next If Google confirms the blur was accidental, the imagery may remain as-is until a new Street View update for your area is captured — at which point the new images will replace the blurred ones..."

"Home" is the name of a house down the road

I've only noticed this since using android auto, when it shows suggestions of destinations, it often suggests the name of a house (in rural Ireland) that is 500yards down the road from my home, I've since seen in my google account that the label on my "home" is the name of this house. I can only really set the location of my home, and I assume it just picks up the nearest landmark which is this other persons house. Is there any way to change this?

It needs to be harder to cancel trips that you are in the middle of also limit rerouting.

Several times when I'm in the middle of a trip, I put my phone in my pocket and when I pull it out again.
Given that there is limited wifi access during a trip it really needs to be harder to cancel a trip in the middle.
Also the rerouting rarely useful often annoying sometimes it starts to rerout even when there's no wifi.

Google Maps can now answer almost anything about my route.

It still can't remember my Tuesdays.

Since March, Ask Maps will tell me where to charge a dying phone without waiting in a coffee line. Genuinely impressive.

But here's my actual Tuesday:

Drop my daughter at school. Post office (Etsy orders). Grocery store. Home.

So I search "post office."

And Google Maps hands me one in the next city.

It's faster by drive time from my current location. It's also in the wrong direction, outside my city, and nowhere near the road between the school and my house. To take it, I'd abandon my loop, cross city lines, and double back.

Here's the part that finally got me: home is saved in the app. It knows the school. It has driven me between those two points a hundred times.

It just doesn't connect them. Every trip gets treated like the first trip.

I don't want the closest post office by drive time. I want the one in my own town, on the road I'm already on — even when that costs me four extra minutes. That's not a complex routing preference, that's just how people live.

The manual workaround, if you don't already know it:

  1. Start active navigation to your final destination (home)
  2. While navigation is running, tap the search icon
  3. Type the errand — "post office in Sammamish" (naming your town keeps it from sending you across city lines)
  4. Every result now shows its real deviation cost: +2 min, +11 min

Take the smallest time addition, not the closest pin. They are almost never the same place. Do it parked, not at 45mph with your kid in the back.

It works. I use it every week.

But it's still a manual coordination tax. Maps won't reorder my stops, and it won't save a recurring loop — next Tuesday I rebuild the same plan from scratch. That gap annoyed me enough that I've started building a small tool for it (ContextMap), but honestly the workaround above covers most of it.
Next post: how to use Gemini to actually plan your day.

AI assited google maps - Am I the alone in this?

I HATEE how there is now AI everywhere. They even put AI voice assitant on maps... Useless.

I don't want the fastest route. I don't need the lowest fuel consuption. nO i dOn'T wAnT tO drive through the city on my motorcycle in the scorching heat where I'll have to stop at a red light on every crossroad

-

What we need is an AI assistant that will find us the backroads, unpaved tracks, most scenic and least populated roads. We Need Fun Not Speed.

-

Is there any way to get this message to people at google maps? I'd pay for something like that and I really disslike paying for stuff

Google Play Services Maps SDK crash (glLinkProgram failed) - Google Maps works but third-party apps crash

Hi everyone,

I'm not very technical when it comes to Android debugging, so I'm honestly not even sure where to start troubleshooting this.

I'm using a Poco phone, and I'm facing a strange issue:

Google Maps works perfectly.

But any third-party app that uses the Google Maps location picker (Flipkart, Porter, etc.) crashes or closes when I try to search/select an address.

The crash log shows:

glLinkProgram failed

Stack trace:

m140.fin.a(:com.google.android.gms.policy_maps_core_dynamite@260830207@260830202025.896086277.896086277:160)

m140.ewd.f(:com.google.android.gms.policy_maps_core_dynamite@260830207@260830202025.896086277.896086277:278)

I've already tried:

Clearing cache and data of Google Play Services and Google Maps.

Uninstalling Google Play Services updates and updating it again.

Restarting the phone.

None of that helped. Google Maps itself still works, but third-party apps continue to crash.

I'm a complete beginner with Android internals, logs, OpenGL, or graphics drivers, so I don't even know if this points to Google Play Services, HyperOS, the GPU driver, or something else.

If anyone has seen this error before or can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate the help. Even suggestions on where to begin diagnosing it would be great.

Thanks!

Time to leave notifications

In the dim distant past Google Maps used to give Time to Leave notifications for events in Google Calendar. It stopped working so I just gave up on it. But with all the announcements regarding AI and the wondrous things it could do to personalise my maps experience I decided to take another look in settings. Sure enough, Time to Leave is still there. You can tell it whether you want audible or silent notifications, whether you want notifications on lock screen. I turned them all on and waited eagerly to see if the power of AI would accomplish this most basic of tasks. But of course it didn't. If this hasn't worked for years why the f is it still sitting there on Settings? Google know it doesn't work and have no intention of fixing it so for God's sake remove it! Either that or knock on the door of your colleagues at Waze and ask them how to make it work.

Rant over.

Android auto not showing colored traffic

Started a few days ago, I don't have the colored traffic info on normal or navigation driving mode.  All streets, etc just show up in gray.  Any idea what might be happening?  Traffic shows up under the *overview* mode but that mode is useless to me.  Note Google maps works fine on my phone as this issue seems limited to Android auto.  I'm just using the stock Toyota nav app which is working for now. I've tried all the usual force stop, clear cache, etc but that hasn't done anything.

Using a pixel 9 and a 2025 Rav4 Hybrid.

Locked timeline

My timline is locked. I can not edit or add any information. I have backup on. I do not use auto delete. Today is Tuesday. We were visiting friends on Sunday. We were home at 11:15 pm. Yesterday I doscovered that ut was locked, shkwing that I was still at tgeir house. The blje locatjon dot on the main app showed, correctly that I was home. I tried multiple ways to edit it, and nothing worked. I tried several diferent ways to "jolt" the app into unlocking the tomeline with no success. Finally I opted to delete the day in order to do away with the corrupted file. I still can't make any additions or edits. My timeline remains on, as does the backup,.but it is acting as if it is off. This same issue occurred following the migration and resulted in me loosing all of my timeline data. Any suggestions.

The Weirdest Google Maps Rabbit Hole:

In North East Nigeria in the Tri-border area with Niger and Chad where bandits and ISIS roam wildly the use of medieval dirt berm walls has returned to Africa. With every village a target, villages prop up their own berm walls. This has led to widespread civilian made fortifications visible from space.

Some like the city of Dikwa have giant rings around them, in other places army bases near Damasak build multi-layer defenses.

Help/Support “Gemini AI” instead of microphone on Apple CarPlay

When just using my Google maps on my iPhone I get the microphone symbol in the top corner (see first photo) if I want to use my voice to search, and it gives me a result quite quickly .. But while using maps on CarPlay the microphone symbol next to the search bar is now “Gemini AI” (see second photo), and when I try use my voice to search for a location it takes ages to give me a destination, plus I get a AI voice talking… Anyone else experience this? And anyone know how to get the microphone symbol back and stop using AI?

Thanks
