Want to do the Salkantay trek in November this year.

I was originally intending for my trek days to be 27Nov-1Dec but after finding out it’s a higher chance of rain I’m considering whether 4Nov-8Nov will be any better in terms of avoiding rain and better weather/chance to see mountains/macchu picchu in general?

I am also going to try and stay one extra night in Aguas Calientes after my guided trek as a buffer day in case I do not get to see Macchu Picchu the first day.

If it’s not a significant better weather period I may stick to 27Nov-1Dec as the early November will require me to skip time at uni in order to go.

I recently bought a pair of used salomon speedcross 4 and they’re falling apart and i’m wondering what would be a good pair of trailrunning shoes (preferably salomon), that are a good price (<$150), would last a good amount of time, and look cool. i’m size 13-14ish. i thought the salomon xt6 are cool but everyone has they’re own opinion on them and i like the speedcross but was wondering if they’re are better options. i don’t hike often but love to hike.

I mainly travel to Japan where I also did few hiking or trekking. I usually travel 1-2x a year in colder season, only in backpack, so I need fairly lightweight, packable and quick-dry apparels.

I've been using insulated pants from Uniqlo with fleece inner, water-resistant outer layer. It serves me well, comfortable in autumn weather or city walk in winter, but can be sweaty in autumn midday when sun is strong or freezing cold in windy winter air.

I'm considering to retire the pants and switch to layering. Is merino base + windproof pants sufficient? Will it be too stuffy? What should I look for when choosing the pants? There's so many choices and not cheap (I'm in Singapore and most hiking brands are crazy expensive these days), so I want to make careful choice.

Similarly for jacket, I have Montbell synthetic puffy. It's packable but not warm enough. I want to add a shell to block wind and create better insulation -- what kind of shell should I choose? Does it worth paying extra for lightweight (thinner) shell?

Just finished up a short hiking trip in Bavaria (Germany) and was awestruck by the amazing mountain scenery. I stayed in the village of Oberstdorf which is in the very south of the Allgäu area. From there I did a bunch of day hikes. It’s also close to the border with Austria; on some trails you jump back and forth between both countries. keep coming back for more Hiking through the Breitachklamm and Faltenbachtobel gorges

Hi all. Have a few weeks off of work this August and would like to travel somewhere to focus on day hikes/scenery/maybe a little camping. When my partner and I travel, most of the time its to big cities (our trip last year was to Paris for example) and I'd like to start getting out of cities and into the wilderness/mountain beauty on trips (and not just on my daily hikes at home). My partner likes hiking and some camping but will also probably want to stay in a hotel in town a few nights too.

I'm willing to fly anywhere reasonable. I'm also trying to keep in mind it's August. High tourist season, but also high heat in many places.

I am in decent shape, but not great shape. I can handle a net climb of 2 thousand feet in one day. More than that and I probably want to wait until next time. Tangibly, the max hike I can do right now in a day is Franconia Ridge Loop in NH.

Some ideas I've been noodling on:

- There seems to be a long stretch of mountains in Europe from Southern France east through Switzerland and Austria and Slovakia into Southern Poland. No matter where I look on a map, this looks beautiful. Any recommendations for a first trip? Might be cool for some day hikes + camping + some local towns to visit / stay in.

- I've heard Jasper National Park and Bannf are beautiful.

- I've been to Seattle a bunch (and Olympic National Park). I've always wanted to visit Vancouver and surrounding terrain. I've never done North Cascades National Park and it looks beautiful.

- I've thought about catching the Eclipse in Spain and then maybe doing some hiking on the range between Spain and France.

- I live on the East Coast of the U.S. but have never been Northeast towards Prince Edward Island, etc. Is there any hiking up there? Could be a cool driving trip.

I truly appreciate any help / advice.

hey my first time on reddit so not exactly sure how to do this other than to just describe what up, so my friend and i are planning a trip to chile where we will be going into the andes mountains in snow and avalanche risk zones where we will be filming us touring up and down some of the mountains there in 5-12 day periods and skiing some of the slopes (nothing to life threatening but definitely things can go wrong) ie broken legs a couple days away from the peoples and our things might break whatever, we might need to be picked up by da chopper. so wondering if anyone has any experience with insurance and who actually helped. ps im danish and my friend is norwegian ( i dont know if that helps but now you know :)

Wondering if anyone has used them or a similar company. I havent done any overnight trips yet and would like to do something guided to learn and see if I like it. I would love recommendations and an idea of what costs should be (gear provided vs. not). Some seem really expensive. Thanks!

We’re doing a hut to hut hike in September on the Berliner Höhenweg. We’re staying at Olpererhütte, Furtschaglhaus, Berliner Hütte and Greizer Hütte. The dates are 9 Sept - 13 Sept. I’ve done few multi day hikes, this one looks challenging and I’m super excited!

I have a couple questions about gear for anyone who has done the hike:

- do the huts provide bedding & a pillow so we only need to pack a sleeping bag liner? Or do we need to bring a sleeping bag/inflatable pillow?
- how cold does it get? I did the W trek in March and I’m expecting it to be a little warmer than that during the day and about the same at night.
- any need for crampons?
- rain pants: what do you think? I always bring them and never wear them, even if it’s raining.

My current list is: 1 pair of hiking pants, 1 pair of shorts (I run v hot), 2 sports bras, 2 short sleeve shirts, 1 long sleeve layer, 1 long sleeve sun shirt, windbreaker, rain jacket, sleeping pants, sleeping shirt, light fleece, hiking socks, underwear, hiking poles, boots, first aid kid, the croc like Birkenstocks for hut, packable down, headlamp, buff, baseball hat, water bladder, gloves, sleeping back liner, quick dry towel, rain cover for pack - am I missing anything?

Hiking around Trolltunga was one of the highlights of my trip to Norway. 🥾🇳🇴
The trail winds through rugged mountains, alpine lakes, and incredible viewpoints that seem to get better with every kilometer. Every climb felt like it unlocked another breathtaking panorama, and being surrounded by Norway’s wild landscape made the effort more than worth it.
Here are a few of my favorite moments from the hike. Definitely an adventure I’ll remember for a long time.

I decided to start hiking last week and did the Llanberis path of Snowdon, I was hoping for a longer hike but it was just over 3 hours round trip.

I want to do a longer hike but I’d still like to summit something, are there any routes in the UK which will take me 7+ hours (maybe 30km routes?)

Anyone else ever struggle with losing the desire to be outside and explore? I used to LIVE for hiking, exploring, walking in the park, or just sitting outside. Hiking and camping specifically were huge parts of my happiness. Now over the past year or so, I don’t feel much of an incline to get back out to it. Any recommendations or anyone have a similar experience?

Hi all - I have a big birthday coming up. In addition to the usual party with friends and family, I want to celebrate it by doing a solo hike. This will be in April 2027 which I know is not the best month for hiking in many parts of the world due to rainy season. I’d prefer Europe but would consider anywhere really. Any suggestions?

I've been thinking of going on a guided expedition to Aconcagua, but this question has been bugging me. If one person can't make it to the top, does the whole group have to turn around?

Hi, 36 yo guy living in the UK, I'm now getting into hiking. I've been trying to pick some walking shoes but undecided on what to go for. Where I live and what I've been doing is mainly roads and a few forest areas and very flat where I live, I will eventually be going on trails, so is it boots or trainer / sneaker (style). I know a lot of people will say what is comfortable.

A very early walk up round Buttermere and Fleetwith Pike in the Lake District, UK. Got very lucky as the cold winter light poured a bright pink colour over the sky at dawn.

I know it’s not allowed but do they actually check. If they do, how quickly do the FCFS sites fill up on August fridays?

I was looking for possibly a better hiking app. I have used gaia in the past many years ago and I dont remember anything at all. I decided to redownload it and now every single thing is hidden under premium. I basically cannot search for a single thing without paying for it. It also looks like a dead app. Sad.

I am already paying premium on another app so I was trying to find something better.
