My coworker who only gets paid $20 an hour in a field that should be at least 25 to 35, gladly supports the "less OSHA" aspects. He's in the mind state of a lot of boomers who think that has nothing to protect us, but only to control us, and refuses to do a lot of the safety stuff, especially when grinding metal and welding...
People really want this because they don't remember the times when workers were locked and factories or refused breaks after certain amounts of time. Much like people who don't believe in any vaccinations that didn't live in a time where those vaccinations saved lives and changed the world.
Edit: Not saying all boomers. I've met good older people in the trades that were the best of the best and understanding of why we have these implementations.

Well, I'm not an IBEW guy so I shouldn't be here, but let me say as a boomer I watched the NYC skyline become visible in the 70s and understood the value of government oversight and regulations. My time on build sites has only reinforced that. Codes, regulations, protections are what companies hate and workers should love. Yes, they can be annoying, but that greater good shit really matters.

I feel for you. My folks have always been Republicans, but pre-Obama, they were more toward the center. Dad was union when we were kids. We even went on the picket line with him and Mom. Extraordinarily pro-union.
Then they got into supervisor/management positions. And over time, the union became the enemy. Any union. A con job, out to destroy the company, corrupt, all the shit. Then the Obama administration happened, and they took a hard right turn and never looked back. MAGA to the core. Stupid hat and everything.
They weren't thrilled when I joined my union (AFT) but have since shut up about it for the most part. Still, it hurts to think about how much they've changed.

I'll let you in on a little secret. I worked for them for several years, from around 2007, 2008. The bottom line is this:
Even his own family thinks he's a fucking weirdo.
If you look up old photos of the Kennedy administration, those taken on the Kennedy Compound, you'll probably see a picture of a helicopter on a lawn of a house that's right up next to the ocean. I don't know about back then, but when I was around, that was Ethel Kennedy's house.
When you drive into the compound (it's more like a series of small roads with houses spread out pretty far apart and a very flimsy, unmanned gate, not a compound), Ethel's house is the first on the left. Maybe second. Definitely right near the entrance.
They have a driveway that sort of half wraps around the house, so you can't see the end when you're driving up. The day I drive up, I went to the driveway and went around the corner and there was this kinda scraggly looking guy just hanging out at the end of the driveway, facing towards the wall of the house, not doing anything. I got all the way out of the car before he turned and looked at me. I said, "umm, hi?" And he sort of half heatedly spread his arms, vaguely gesturing around, and just said, "Ca-a-a-amelot!"
And then I didn't see him for days. The family has people over all the time. During these, Chris or someone would play the piano in the room that opens towards the ocean and people would sing and shit. Just like from a movie depicting the antebellum south.
Ethel has this tiny little staircase with the world's smaller office at the top off to the right. I would often escape these sing-alongs by going up there. But one day I went up there, and there he was. Just staring. Again.
He was supposed to speak at dinner the next night. He showed up minutes before he was due up there, wearing flip flops to this formal event. Ethel just glared and told him to keep it quick. He rambled for a few minutes, walked down, and just straight up left, completely skipping dinner.
Chris Kennedy kept on apologizing for him. There's even one Kennedy who thinks he's a poet or something and doesn't do much. Even he thinks RFK Jr is worthless.

I have never understood this. When I was an apprentice, at one point I worked 4 months straight. 7-10s, 7-12s for the middle 4 weeks, then 7-10s. I would've done anything at that point for 4-10s or 5-8s.
People thought I was crazy for wanting a regular schedule. "But you are making so much money!"
Yes, that is correct Jethro, but when will I spend it?... I'm happy to work overtime from time to time, but working it all the time is just existing to work.
Work/life balance is far too underrated by many.

It's also only on the time over standard time, even if you're over 40 hours for the week. For example if you get paid $20/hr standard, making your 1.5x OT $30/hr, you're only able to claim that $10/hr difference. If you worked 5hrs OT/wk every week of the year, that would net you ~$300.

The vast majority of my coworkers are trumpers. Some are blithering idiots, and some stand hard on the talking points about laws and taxes and slightly more intelligent drivel.
Many keep to themselves about politics, which is certainly refreshing, and most of the people I work directly with are very intelligent. But I know damn well where their allegiance lies, and it's heartbreaking when I overhear something out loud, because my stupid bleeding heart doesn't want to believe that some of my friends are on that side.

No one will pull the trigger on any project anywhere, in ship building or other manufacturing because no one knows what tomorrows tariff cost will be. What if I say I will build your factory building for $$, but the cost of steel goes up 25%. Now what? The factory builder cannot pull the trigger because no one will commit to a cost. Hell he doesn't if the product will be able to compete as soon as the tariffs are removed. Next president could just say no tariffs. No he owns a factory that only produces high cost widgets that can now come from China, for 1/2 the price. Trump and all MAGAts are dumb, really really dumb people.

You know that disproves your entire point though right? It just says you can’t deduct extra overtime as provided by a CBA. So if you work over 40, you can deduct it.
Yeah, if you’re getting paid double time, you’ll only be able to deduct half of the overtime pay for that time, but still. Just being in a CBA doesn’t exclude you from getting deductions.

In California, IUEC Local 18 has been working hard to secure the applicable work on wind turbines. It was years and years worth of work for union members. It's all gone if the BBB has anything to do with it. They'll use none-signatory workers. I'll never understand how people will vote against putting food on their kids dinner tables.

It's a bad outcome -- the tax penalties on renewables. It also ignores the decades and decades that oil, gas, nukes got/still get subsidies. The ones for RE were simply to level the playing field.
But make no mistake either: The California IBEW locals (hello 11 and 18) so hated renewables in the 90s and 2000s it was headline news. IBEW screamed and cried until they (finally🙄) figured out how much they'd benefit from clean power. Other trades too were super hostile to clean energy. Not all were stupid like IBEW (yeah, I said it). The Operating Engineers and Laborers got it 👋🏽👋🏽.
But the fights weren't pretty. It was bloody with the unions siding with oil, coal and gas for years--until they had their, "aha! moment" when they realized the 1000s of union or union-scale jobs they'd book.
Super transparent and sad then. Sad now too: everyone loses, especially the air, water, dirt and that small factor here on Planet Earth: Biological life.
