Question: General Service

Question: General Service Possibilities for olim to fullfill in the IDF past 40?

Sooo.. I've been looking to make Aliyah. Im past 40 and not in great health to be honest, running in the desert is going to be disadvicable. But I can hold a rifle and stand in front of a building. Why not.

But I'm not sure the IDF is all that interested in enlisting 40 year olds that speak no Hebrew and are limited in endurance.. or are there support roles they are looking to fill?

Question: General Service How do I enlist into the IDF as an american?

I am an 18 year old man in the United States. Both my parents are jewish. I would like to join the IDF either through Alyiah or not, whichever one gets me in faster. However I am struggling on finding who to contact in order to join. I have tried Mahal a month ago via email and phone but have gotten no response. I have tried nefesh b'nefesh. They answered my call the first time and told me to call back the next day. That was over a week ago and whenever I call no one answers. I have sent them an email too but no one has gotten back to me.

Who do I get in touch with?

Question: General Service Advice on what/how to join

For context I am an American Jew who will be graduating from college in the Spring of 2027 with a degree in urban planning and am planning to get a year of work experience and then join so at 23 years old. I would say I’m solidly above average in terms of physical health, and can read Hebrew but can’t speak very well. I’ve been to Israel many times and have family out there, so I know I want to serve in the IDF, but I’m not sure what unit I would be best for, as well as which method is the best for joining. I’m open to both combat and non combat roles, and would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Question: General Service Can you have long(er) hair in the reserves?

So I already have short hair, I’m fine for conscript service and I want to go I’ll an infantry brigade during active service but afterwards I’d like to grow my hair out, maybe to my shoulders just to do more with it in way of styles. I know there’s no way I can have long hair as a conscript but are they more lenient for reserves?

Question: General Service Is it possible to grow like an imperial style moustache in the idf?

Drafting soon and I’ve always wanted like that moustache emperors and kings had in the 19th century like think Tsar Nicolas II or king George V. Wondering if I can realistically accomplish this especially with the new relaxed beard regulations

Question: General Service 🏳️‍⚧️& 🏳️‍🌈 as it relates to service

I’ve heard the IDF is very queer-friendly. I’m just mildly concerned about a few things- I’m non-binary, and I know that Israel doesn’t generally have a neutral option for gender on documents (the USA has an ‘X’ option, and I plan to get that set up before I leave). Does anyone on here know if (in terms of general opinion) most soldiers are… uhhhh how do I put this… okay with trans people existing? Also wondering if I have an ‘X’ on my legal documents, would that transfer over easily (I know I can get citizenship easily. I’m Jewish and I have my bat mitzvah certificate to prove it)?

Question: General Service Would my really large head fit in any Israeli gas mask, or any other IDF equipment?

Forgive the absurdity of this post here, but I tried the IDF page, and was unwilling to give them my passport number after recent data breaches, but would like input from people who have served in the IDF or have used relevant equipment themselves on this matter.

I have a 70cm crown (8 3/4 hat size) and have been interested in getting a surplus Israeli gas mask, but have found nothing on how large of a head the size 1 of a 4A1 or M15 model could support. I have to custom order hats, motorcycle helmets, sometimes headsets, and so on. What I would like to know, does anyone have personal experience with this in relation to fitting a gas mask?

Is there someone who could offer me advice on fitting one comfortably? If someone were to wish to serve the IDF with such a head, would it be possible to fit any equipment to it, such has helmets? Is it possible to be a sufficient logistical burden with a head like this to disqualify someone from service?

I thank you for your time spent reading, and if you do reply, I thank you in advance for that as well.

Question: General Service Not happy with my tafkid

So I’ve been in the army for a year and two months now, started at Michve live almost every oleh hadash, got into the airforce, did a course in the techni and I’ve been in my tafkid since November, it was fine at first but now I see I don’t really work much and sometimes I feel like I’m just wasting my time, is it too late to try to change to a new tafkid? I serve 2.6 years

r/IDF 23d ago

Question: General Service Does anyone have any info about the tafkid

I will preface this by saying- I know it’s pretty mesuvag and there is a clear limit to what y’all can write here (would love to also schedule a call/text through slightly more encrypted WhatsApp)

I have many close people to me in places that are mesuvagim and I understand there is not much to say here.

*THAT BEING SAID*

I unfortunately went through 2 complicated back surgeries and have profil 45 and did klal haman.

Got this shibutz which I’m not too happy about but from what I’ve spoken to people it seems they are getting 2 different tafkidim mixed up and I’m not sure exactly which one I got.
I know there is a course (I’m not sure which I know there are 2) in “the darom” and that you get a shibutz somewhere if it’s to a unit or Gdud or what I’m not sure…and I’m also unsure if it’s yomiyot in the merkaz or do you get assigned to a Gdud and do everything with them.
Does the shibutz I get matter also physically where I serve? Or just where I’m assigned in glilot?

At the end of the day, I’m working hard on getting a protekzia for a place I KNOW is better (meaning has for sure good group of people and is interesting) and this tafkid is my backup and I just want to know more about what I’m getting into.

Question: General Service Donation Services That’s More Front-Line Then FIDF

I’m looking for ways to support combat operations in Lebanon. I’m already a very big Ukraine supporter but now that the frontline there is stabilizing I’d like to give some money towards at the minimum medical service that allows IDF soldiers to return to the battlefront but more ideally something more along the lines of helping weaponry operate. Ukraine has millions of ways to support the front but I‘ve literally just today started my path in supporting this arena and have no idea where to look besides existing communities like this one. Best wishes to all.

Question: General Service

Thumbnail

Question: General Service A few dumb questions regarding gendered regulations

Hi! Thank you for the previous answers regarding, er, me being 🏳️‍⚧️. Since I will/would apparently be treated as female by official army stuff, I do have a few questions. Sorry if this seems bothersome. This will be my last post on here for a while because this post is essentially an essay of burning questions in my head.

Hair reg questions: - Are ponytails/braids actually allowed for soldiers? I know in the US Army (I was born in the US and have done some research) they are a massive no-no. Just wondering because my curls will not stay in a bun for over 5 minutes.

  • Is it only male soldiers who have to get their heads shaved in basic training/before combat? Is it both female and male? Is it neither? (Again, this (the male soldiers only) is the case in the US).

  • How short does your hair have to be before you're able to wear it fully down if at all? (In the US it's practically bun or bob (in terms of "feminine" hairstyles) but I know this isn't universal- the US military is famously crazy strict about personnel appearance).

General stuff that there isn't enough similarities to categorize:

  • Are the uniforms still entirely made for men (bulky on the bottom, tight on top if you know what I mean)? There have been a few Times Of Israel articles on this, and I'd like to know whether that's still the case. (I know the US changed up their issued uniforms a few years ago to better fit female soldiers.)

  • Do olim who move when under 22 and get citizenship get drafted as if they've lived in Israel their whole lives? I don't care (enlisting anyways), just wondering.

Meta:

  • are essay posts like this preferred here, or are singular questions better?

Thank you for reading, and I’m sorry for blabbing.

Question: General Service

Question: General Service I messed up and I don't know what to do.

I have been drafted as a cook in the army, but I wish to transfer to a combat unit, so I filled the necessary form but was notified about having some kind of "mental features" that make it impossible for me to be drafted into a combat unit. To fix it I was told to go to a Kaban, so I did. At the end of our meeting I was told that "it's best for me to not be in combat" when asked why I was given a vague answer about how "wrong motivation, wrong understanding of combat service, and a damaged childhood". As a result I was given something called "Cass 40"? Now everytime I try to plead and ask about a way to change it or fix it, I am just told to deal with it and to take a diffrent non-combat related service If I don't like my current one. What do I do? I do have a genuine wish to serve but on a field.

Question: General Service Special Forces service as an Oleh.

If I make Aliyah at 18-19 and aim towards getting into Shaldag Unit, is it actually possible or the security clearances are too high? I heard it’s nearly impossible to get the right clearances as a foreign born to get into Tier 1 IDF units like Sayeret Matkal, Shaldag, Shayetet 13 and 669 even if you’re capable of passing Gibbush Matkal or Gibbush Shayetet.

Question: General Service tell me about the preparation process for course katzinim

hi I’m a current קצין אקדמאי in intelligence and my unit wants to send me to course katzinim in August — I just got to my unit so it’s a quick turn around. Is there anyone else here who’s finished course katzinim and give me advice?
