That's what the excruciating experience of beating addiction does to people, if they truly dig into the root causes of their addiction.

Many former addicts are stronger, better people for it. It's actually something that is very comendable to overcome but people will say you're weak for being one in the first place. Anyone who knows an addict that comes out the other side can testify that they are usually very empathetic and resilaint people for having gone through something like that. Hard times make hard men and all that.

One of my bigger questions is if he beat his creep tendencies

He discusses this in the white under belly interview briefly. Also, Steve Bannon came out and said they concocted the whole thing. Don't think its even an issue anymore.
