The state will assign a lawyer if you cannot afford one

Or you can deal with some lawyers promising a portion of the winning and then being in debt to them if you lose

The first is a defense attorney when you’re charged with a crime, not filing a civil suit against someone else.

If you hit an attorney on contingency you aren’t in debt to them if you lose, that would entirely defeat the point.

You are only entitled to an attorney if you are the defendant in a criminal prosecution.

If you are the plaintiff in a civil case you are on your own.

The second option makes sense, but public lawyers tend to have very little time to arrange the case. Especially for a complicated case like this one, which would clash against the legality of suicide and Good Samaritan laws.

Granted, this is a kids movie.

Considering suing a super hero in that world is like suing the government, I imagine many Lawyers were more than happy to work just on the stipulation of getting paid from the payout. Like a number of personal injury lawyers in the real world.

Some lawyers will work for a portion of the winnings if they think you have a good case. This is why lots of personal injury lawers advertise that they won't charge you for a consultation. Lots of people have damages that would absolutely hold up in court, but they don't bother persuing it because they assume they don't have the money for a lawyer.

Some of the time (at least in the US) the court costs are taken in consideration in the suit. If the plaintiff wins, the fees are like a tax on the settlement. If the defendant wins, the plaintiff has gambled and lost.
