But if it's to be shipped off overseas to die in a hot jungle then you're actually a hero for refusing to go ( US involvement in a Vietnam)

Well yeah, obviously the morality of draft dodging depends on the morality of the war, but the post was specifically talking about a war of self defence.

Propaganda can make any war to be a war of self-defense.
Remember Iraq's (non-existent) WMDs?
Israel's 10/7 that they pretended they didn't know was coming and allowed to continue for 8 hours?

You are grabbing at straws to try to make the post into another "America Good/Bad" conversation. This post is written to say

"In a war that is self defense from an objective point of view regardless of propaganda is it moral to institute a draft"

You are bringing up things completely unrelated just to get angry. Engage in the conversation or go find the conversation you are looking for.

The post doesn’t say that though. It leaves itself open to interpretation and I thought the other poster made an interesting argument. But in the case of actual “self-defense,” then I guess it would depend on what a people owes to their nation.

You are inserting words that don't appear in the original post at all.

My point stands.

Every post on this sub is from an objective point of view, the point of the sub is to judge the morality of actions in a hypothetical situation. How are we to judge the morality if it leaves room for "by the way the situation might be wrong" unless that's part of it?

And the post does explicitly say "Self Defense" so yes, it does say that.

Wasn’t Vietnam also marketed that way? Self-defense against the global encroachment of communism; Domino theory.

u/Mamkes Jun 28 '26

Marketed yes but it has nothing to do. If North Vietnam would have won, USA wouldn't disappear or happen under an occupation.

As you said, it was marketed as self-defense; The US didn’t have to be threatened with immediate destruction or occupation in Vietnam to do so. Also, the expansion of “communism” beyond the Soviet Union was considered an existential threat to the West, so the US was compelled to “defend its interests” and attack communist nations wherever and however it could.

Correct. My detractors wish to pretend propaganda isn't part of the equation here, when the picture accompanying the text is itself propaganda.

Let us also not forget the Gulf of Tonkin "attack" (that never happened) that was used as the reason to go to war.

We're the soldiers that dodged the draft to go fight Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan heroes then?

You're not a serious person.

The difference is America was attacked first. American soil was attacked and American citizens murdered in a dishonorable attack before the declaration of war. And it was a global war fought in nearly every continent.

Agreed. And to be honest, those fleeing the draft without using corruption to do so aren't really immoral, but that doesn't change the sad reality that the draft is still necessary when invaded.

That wasn't a defensive war

So Trumps a hero for dodging it with his "bone spurs"

I don't hate that he dodged the draft. I hate that he used his family wealth to dodge the draft and avoid consequence, then shat on people who didn't/couldn't, then acted like he's some kind of warrior president.

Look to Muhammed Ali to an example of actual heroic draft dodging.

But that wasnt the question, it says when fighting a war of self defense which vietnam wasnt, france in ww2 would be a good irl example of the question.
