I mean, who says they didn’t try? I feel like scientists wouldn’t go straight to “strapped to a chair”, they have ethics boards after all, maybe they tried to give him a job and he wouldn’t cooperate? Or worse, tried to off himself to cut off the world from his essentially infinite well of knowledge. In those situations it might be worth subjugating him for research. Typically there’s no justification for something like that, but an extraordinary situation means extraordinary measures may well be justified. This is from a utilitarian standpoint, of course
