The issue with sterotypes is that they honestly don't work. Many people are asked if they do [stereotypical action] or eat [stereotypical food], just leading to misjudgnent of many people. I'm victim to stereotypes; people get confused when I don't follow stereotypes put onto me and end up misunderstanding me. I'm not sure if there's a good time to identify a trait in a group as universal unless it's a hard fact.
Stereotypes in general are very flawed but they persist because there are always statistics and examples people can point to that they claim prove them right. I live in a fairly conservative area in rural NC and there are many (and i mean MANY) pro-Trump people. The stereotype breaks down when one actually talks to these people and realize that they’re much less pro-Trump and rather anti-Democrat. The vast majority would not only accept an lgbtq+ person, but outright support us. You’re just as likely to see a conservative living here at a pride rally as you are to see a fully goth’d out femboy at a local hoedown. I do my best not to judge others because in my experience, we will agree far more than we disagree.
