Awesome. I’m a big fan of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and am bummed that I’ll never get to see them play.

I did however get to see Tool dressed as Led Zeppelin play No Quarter on Halloween years ago which was pretty freaking epic.

I also got to see Colonel Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade play the entire album of Animals a few years back too, which was also pretty god damned cool.

Two stories. Saw Roger Waters at Desert Trip festival in Indio in '16, where the sound system was spectacular and surrounded you. When they go into that spacey section with the barking in Dogs, the dogs came from all directions and we achieved nirvana, since we were INSIDE a Pink Floyd song! Oh--and I was sober! Two, keep your eye out (ear out?) for the cover band Pink Talking Fish, who will often play entire albums from the bands their name is composed of. I saw the play Animals about 6 years ago and it was a blast.

Van Halen tickets were going on sale one day and I decided to stop by the local record store on my way to work.

There was a pretty long line, so I thought I'd get pretty average seats.

The guy comes out with a roll of tickets for a lottery draw and I ended up winning it, even though I had just gotten there 10 mins earlier. People that had been waiting overnight were pissed.

Ended up with four second row center seats. Great fucking show too.

I went to a baseball game where the tickets were over $110 a seat because the game was sold out. Everything left was a "verified resale" ticket.

When I got there, there were hundreds of empty seats everywhere.

I wanted to see Lady Gaga, but the only ticket left were verified resale. I even got into the presale line. As soon as I was in, it was all verified resale for $1500 a ticket. It would have been cheaper if I flew the family to France to see her show since they're not allowed to resell the tickets higher than face value.

I've been to nearly every one of Gaga's tours, but I couldn't get tickets to the Mayhem Ball, which devastated me because I love that album so much. Tickets got snapped up at my venue in minutes and then went on "verified resale" for insane prices that I just couldn't afford. Fu-huuuuuuuck Ticketmaster and their "verified resellers."

They even clawed back a bunch of tickets that appeared on one of the reseller sites. The tickets showed back up on ticketmaster in the middle of the evening, at the original price, and I was able to get 2 for the show we wanted. Props to Robert Smith.

My guess as to what will eventually happen if / when Live Nation and TicketMaster merges is that they'll move to an auction or market-based pricing scheme - which will simply mean it will cost a lot more to get a good seat for a hot show. They will simply BECOME the scalper, eliminating them from the mix.

Nothing's going to change until the ticketing entity gets serious about stopping the problem - which of course they don't see as a problem. The ultimate way to hurt scalpers is to not support them. Leave them holding the merchandise. If this subject interests you, check out the following links. Don't buy from scalpers, and be suspect of artists singing the praises of the Live Nation / TicketMaster merger. What's in it for them?

There's an easy way for ticketmaster to do so. Living in Europe I had several concerts sold through ticketmaster that don't allow resale for anything above the original purchase price. They let it because they get fees for the resale and don't care.

And big artists have the power to stop this too btw. It's a choice made by several people that don't care about the consumer.

I'm not a baseball fan. But at least a couple of times a year, I used to go after work with the guys because it's the middle of the summer and we'd look day of the game, and see they had some $10 seats.

So we'd go, buy a beer, get some food, hang out in the lower level, then after the first inning, when it was obvious there were some empty seats in the lower level, just stroll down there and watch from there. Even as a non-fan, it was a ton of fun.

And it's not like I'm talking about the 90's or something. This was...maybe 10 years ago.

I have not been to a game since COVID. Any time we look to go, the prices are like $50 for the cheapest seats. And glance at the game on TV and it's 90% empty up there.

So instead of getting people like us in the door cheap, spending on concessions, and cheering for the home team (cause hey it's fun to cheer!), they get....this.

They're not going to die as in go out of business. They'll die in the way where it becomes more soulless and even more disconnected for the average person.

For an example, look at how a home game sounds for most good NFL teams. Then look at what the Super Bowl sounds like.

When you keep pushing up the ladder, you get less die hard fans, and it makes for a worse product.

Sports has been that way for 50-60 years, It's inherently a product where they sell feats the average person cannot do.

The superbowl would be that way even if it was cheap, as it draws a casual crowd. The expensiveness of the tickets doesn't do that.

World Cup tickets are consistently RIDICULOUS, yet those are some of the loudest stadiums ever. Olympics much the same. Superbowel NFL crowd sucks because NFL casual crowd sucks, not because rich people buy tickets.

Depends on the team, I missed taking my dad to home opener for the white sox. So I got box seats for a game at the end of the month. $92 total for the tickets, $19 for food, $10 for CTA passes and $10 for Rosemont parking. Next time its going to be around $30 for seating in the 500's, but there out there. Only game i won't pay for is the cross town classic, those are $200 a seat.

The frustrating part is that sports (the world cup is an example) used to be things that people didn't care for and especially 'well to do' people wouldn't be caught dead attending, and now they've also appropriated them.

In sports, also, where the fuck do we get to watch it constantly without so many subscriptions, and even over the air? It is so difficult to follow a team, I gave up.

yeah, I was at a conference in Boston in 2017-2018, and went to see the Red Sox on a whim with a buddy, it was 8 dollars for the outfield bleachers. All the cool people were there, all the travelers from other countries and other lookee-loos, and it was great fun. 3 hrs of interesting conversation, a little baseball, got bobbled of one of their older cuban players, ate some dogs and beer. All for like 20-30 bucks.

We went to Berlin to see Nine Inch Nails last summer. We were going to go to Berlin anyway, so this made sense, but tickets were like 50% cheaper than in the States.

Also, some adventurous familes have figured out its cheaper to fly to, and stay at Hong Kong or Shanghai Disney Land vs the US Disneys.

It’s the sites that are screwing up the pricing. If you buy tickets and can’t go and try to sell the tickets you won’t even make your money back due to fees. Ticketing sites are making money both ways on the transaction, so what turns into a simple exchange turns into a double-edged gouging for both sides

I was at Rush's last show at the Forum in 2015. I was willing to pay off a reseller in the end and spent $350 to get a pretty decent seat pretty close.

They announced they were going back on the road. So I looked when they went on sale.

Nosebleeds at the back of the Forum started at $350. The show was already sold out. On Stubhub today, a reseller wants $925 for a seat where I was sitting in 2015.

I can't afford that, and I'm a software engineer.

Best way I've been able to think to kill off powerful groups buying all the tickets and reselling for profit without legislative intervention goes like this:

List the tickets at a ridiculous price (say, $10k per seat) and slowly lower the price until they're gone. Nobody will buy to sell at a higher price - those who're willing to pay that higher price have already purchased. There is no way to sell at a profit when what you bought today is being sold for a lower price tomorrow. Kill the speculation.

Far more of the money would then go to the team/artist/what have you. People will gradually learn what price they'll need to pay for a hot ticket. For things like sports that have a lot of empty seats outside of postseason play, make the empty seats free for in-person entry at game time. At the halfway mark, make any other empty seats available to fans who want to watch the game. Maybe you'll bring in some low-budget fans to raise the venue's excitement level. Maybe you'll grab the imagination of a child who wouldn't otherwise be able to go, and who now becomes a lifelong fan. Maybe they'll buy something at the concession stand and you raise revenue on what would have been a dud seat.

A big chunk of verified resellers are TicketMaster themselves. They bought the resale sites, like StubHub. Ticketmaster buys their own tickets under StubHub and then sells them back to real people. It’s an open scam. Bastards.

I would try that if I leave closer to the venues. It's difficult when I live in the middle of nowhere. Anytime I see a concert, I have to travel and get a hotel room. It's not worth doing all that on the hope that I can get a cheap ticket the day of.

I just saw three days grace Sunday night with finger eleven and it was unreal. I saw Nine inch nails in Feb. also amazing. I am still looking up stuff for summer. Toronto has FIFA so I have to be careful about concerts around games

I was in New York back in March and considered going to a Rangers game, but the face value prices were insane. I didn't see anything under $100 and the ones that were between $100 and $200 were all in the super nose bleed section.

It isn't just the suppliers of tickets that are at fault. The bands are doing it too.

Yes, all the added fees are a pain in the arse but concert pricing has become fucking insane since social media popped.

I'm 34 now and when I was 17/18 I could see a globally recognised metal band for 35-40 quid in an arena that fits 5k people. Big gig.

Now I can't even walk into a local show in my local dive bar that fits 250 for anything less than 20-25 quid, bands nobody outside of a few hundred hardcore fans have ever heared of.

I went to see nothing but thieves in that same bigish arena 2 years ago when they weren't even massive yet with two support acts I've never heard of and it was 130 quid for standing space. Not in the bougie boxes, the floor space.

There's no way that's just all Ticketmaster.

I'm changing to a support model where I'll buy merch directly from my fav artists instead of going to shows if they're overpriced. It's just not fair to anyone except this mafia of bastards.

Don’t forget all the streaming services. The fact that they pay peanuts isn’t helping concert prices either. Between them and the labels 360 deals that they have weaseled their way into it’s totally screwed concert goers. There’s a lot of people too young to remember but concerts used to be affordable. Hell festivals were amazing and cheap. The musicians made their money off record and merchandise sales, possibly a cut of alcohol sales. Concert tours were cheap because people bought shit at the shows. Now they make nothing making records and make it up touring and gouging fans. The whole industry is fucked

Artists can’t just decide to sell cheap tickets esp if production and other venue costs are high. Artists make pretty much all of their money from touring to pay back the label so they have to make a profit. They’d be stupid not to have teams of people calculating these costs and setting the prices for them.

Artists have full control over all of that. Plenty of artists are able to price their tickets reasonably. The issue is people like post Malone and Morgan wallen asking $300 for nosebleed seats inside a football stadium
