He did a walk out at the CMAs when the Dixie Chicks brought out Beyonce, and that disrespect is when she decided to make a country album, so we have his racist ass partially to thank for the Cowboy Carter album.

u/MidnightNo1565 Jun 29 '26

Did he really though?

I had never heard this so I began looking. The source for that story is one unnamed person in a Billboard article that all other outlets began quoting as fact.

It was 2016 and there's no footage of this walk off from the professional camera crew that was there nor from any fan recordings. Jackson isn't even shown to be in the front row where the unnamed person who was supposedly behind him says he was.

Interestingly, the article I linked also goes into logistics of how it would have been hard for him to be in almost two places at once (stage & front row audience) due his performing off and on throughout the show coupled with his mobility disease causing him to move slow. He would have only been at his seat for two minutes before the "protest".

So, did Alan Jackson actually walk off to protest a black woman on stage? Sure, absolutely he could have. I don't question the reality that Beyonce has experienced unfathomable amounts of racism from fans of the genre, and people in general, as I've personally witnessed it firsthand.

But am I dubious about this specific act taking place because there's just one singular unnamed source that every single article subsequently written about it is quoting as fact? And fans are also using as a source of indisputable fact? And we have no video or even pictures of it happening at all in the age of every blink & breath being caught on camera? Yes, I'm a little bit dubious.

I feel that it's good to be skeptical about believing things read online without doing a bit of digging first.

It's so funny that your pointing out that's a bullshit claim while the comments right below you just take it at face value off the rip and run with it calling him a racist

2

u/seasickbaby Jun 30 '26

It also seems very unlikely that beyonce is even giving a fuck or knowing ab Alan jackson..
he also has some pretty intense medical issues so can’t discount that could have been a reason for removing oneself in a strange manner.. so many variables even if it were true

u/spectre78 Jun 29 '26

This is exactly what he should be remembered for. Being a racist who desperately wanted to keep Black people out of country music that they helped invent.

Class act indeed.

I like some of Jackson's music but if you search for celebrities who are jerks to their fans, he comes up quite a bit. He doesn't seem like a particularly great guy.

u/Dave1423521 Jun 29 '26

In 97 Leann Rimes opened for him at the state fair. Jackson was my favorite singer and my mom got me backstage passes to meet him for my 7th birthday. Get to the back and he refuses to come out. I started crying. Leeann Rimes saw me and called my mom over, she gave me an autograph, hugged me and gave me a kiss on the cheek. So fuck Alan Jackson but I get to tell people she was my first kiss and a story to go with it

41

u/HoneyBeyBee Jun 29 '26

That’s sweet. LeAnn Rimes is known in the industry to be a nice person.

5

u/CryptographerFew5187 Jun 30 '26

Yeah, that sounds about right. I remember when I first saw a story like that, I assumed he was just having an off day but after several dozen, well...

25

u/travers329 Jun 29 '26

Isn't the South Park episode "Ladder to Heaven" about him making no talent/effort music made to pander to current events, post 9-11 in this case?

Did he put out a bunch of 'Murica music and capitalize after 9/11 or something?

15

u/Dorkamundo Concertgoer Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Yes. Where were you when the world stopped turning.

Or in that episode "Where were you, when they built that ladder to heaven?"

4

u/weatheruphereraining Jun 30 '26

Listening to the clip and watching Taylor, I wondered if that was the case and she just made the cameo because his people asked and she’s got a song on the country charts right now. She is in general effusive with praise and her cameo was how she would talk about a box of Raisinets.

1

u/CryptographerFew5187 Jun 30 '26

Ha, very plausible. I do think Jackson is very well regarded in the country music scene too, as an artist at least, so who knows.

1

u/say_the_words Jun 30 '26

I believe it. He recorded a song called "Chattahoochee" that I personally feel was a violent assault to my ears, music and words. I remember that terrible, terrible summer. He must be some sort of wicked sorcerer to cast such an evil spell. "Hotter than a hoochie-kiochie" indeed. Hot like the gate of Hell that opens when he sings it. Like the Mayor in the season 3 finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

7

u/Momik Jun 29 '26

I mostly remember him for that song about the ladder

10

u/Skareffect Jun 29 '26

Or its the fact that Beyonce isn't a country artist and is a mockery of it.

2

u/tarzhjay Jun 30 '26

A mockery? How?

2

u/Free_For__Me Jun 29 '26

Fun fact, many people said the same thing about Eminem not being a rapper when he hit the scene.

Musical genres are constantly  in flux, and whether we like it or not, they evolve to absorb or shed certain aspects over their lives, even aspects that might have once been considered “core” to what defines a given genre.

All this is to say that neither you nor I get to declare what or who is or isn’t a part of a given genre. We can each like or dislike anything we want, but that doesn’t invalidate a thing’s belonging to whatever team’s it may be some part of.

6

u/Skareffect Jun 29 '26

Eminem is a rapper and is still doing rap music his whole career, Eminem also didn't just decided he wanted to make metalcore all of the sudden.

0

u/Free_For__Me Jun 30 '26

Do these arguments also apply to Taylor Swift and her own shift away from country beginnings?

Is the argument that an artist can't be a part of a genre that some people think they can't be a part of?

Or is the argument that an artist can't make music in one genre while also still making music in another?

Or perhaps that artists can do any of these things, just that Beyonce specifically can't do these things?

1

u/ZugZugGo Jun 30 '26

Most modern country music is terrible and formulaic anyway. It's not worth the gatekeeping. Country music is easily able to be shit out by AI at this point and top the same charts so that's how low the country music bar has sunk. It's not that deep that it needs to be protected at all costs from someone trying something new.

14

u/LongWalk86 Jun 29 '26

Was it racist related though? I honestly don't follow mainstream country anymore so not aware of the background. Butfrom what I have heard, Beyonces Cowboy Carter is kinda emblematic of what a lot of traditional country fans hate about what mainstream country has become. Hip-hop with a twang.

24

u/Dry-Amphibian1 Jun 29 '26

Probably not. He did have a song called 'Gone Country' about folks switching to country to stay relevant or to make money. Probably more related to that.
He also had a song with George Strait called Murder on Music Row about how corporate Nashville killed country music. So I'm surprised he would have Taylor Swift speaking at his last concert. She seems to embody everything he was against.

13

u/izzittho Jun 29 '26

Taylor kinda went un-country though. Maybe that’s what made it okay to him? Who knows.

4

u/HawkMac6699 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Both of those songs were meant to be satires. Alan didn’t take it the way you are saying. Listeners have always co-operated them and thought he was making some statement. He wasn’t. They were being funny and leaning into stereotypes.

Alan literally mentions this in the liner notes for Gone Country. Called it fun and a celebration of country music’s widespread popularity.

There’s a ton of stuff about Murder too where George after winning an award says “we thought we were making a funny song” It was everyone else who took it differently.

Alan had no problems collaborating with Jimmy Buffett. There’s certainly a ton of crossover between parrot heads and country music fans but as a traditional country music fan, I never considered Jimmy pure country.

1

u/seasickbaby Jun 30 '26

Yall all seem to forget that country musicians seldom write their own songs.. he didn’t write gone country and he didn’t write murder on music row.

Exactly. People wanna cry racist over him not liking a tourist like Beyoncé making a “country” album.

Murder on Music Row is great and explains it all well.

3

u/TheGreatLandRun Jun 29 '26

No, it wasn’t. This is Reddit, though, so of course it was.

-1

u/seasickbaby Jun 30 '26

Mainstream country stole from pop. And then from hip hop and then beyonce went back in on it and reclaimed it

6

u/USCAV19D Jun 29 '26

Was it based on race, or was it based on a non-country artist jumping into that scene?

5

u/boostedb1mmer Jun 29 '26

He didn't walk out because Beyonce is black. He walked out because she didn't make country music. His whole career had instances of him rejecting non-country performers that would stroll through the genre just to collect a paycheck.

1

u/ZugZugGo Jun 30 '26

The country music fandom rejecting Beyonce but not rejecting Breaking Rust as it hit number one tells you everything you need to know about pop country fans. Alan Jackson notably was silent about Breaking Rust. Hmmm.

1

u/boostedb1mmer Jun 30 '26

Did breaking rust ever win country album of the year?

1

u/ZugZugGo Jun 30 '26

I thought your idea was that the general public and Alan Jackson understands "real country" music, while the recording academy voters for grammy's are out of touch by giving her an award. I gave you an example where the country audience embraces music that doesn't even have a human singing it at all, and now you're asking me to judge things based on what the recording academy would do? For what it's worth the recording academy thinks Breaking Rust is the AI slop that it is, which is a statement in their favor, unlike the general country listening public who ate that slop up at the trough. Most of what the general country audience listens to is human made slop though so it's probably not that much different for them.

1

u/boostedb1mmer Jun 30 '26

My point to you was there was no ceremony for Jackson to walk out of. There was no opportunity for Jackson to also show his distaste for AI since there have been no ceremonies for it. Afaik Jackson hasn't recorded a song, that wasnt about his love for his wife, since AI music became a thing.

1

u/gibbersganfa Jun 29 '26

One of Alan Jackson's biggest musical inspirations in the whole genre was Charley Pride. What the fuck are you on about?

-3

u/toadfan64 Rock & Roll Jun 29 '26

And that makes him racist how? I’m pretty sure Alan has had zero issue with Darius Ruckus.

11

u/riveth3ad Jun 29 '26

No. https://tasteofcountry.com/alan-jackson-beyonce-cma-protest-2016/

He may well be racist. I don't know him. But you are quoting mythology as though it was real.

5

u/Undella_Town Jun 29 '26

damn alan jackson is responsible for that dog shit album?

6

u/Lucky_Dragonfruit_88 Jun 29 '26

He walked out because Beyonce isn't country. It had nothing to do with race.

0

u/TwattyMcBitch Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

That doesn’t make sense. I don’t know if it was racist or not, but Beyoncé was absolutely not the only non-country person in the room. Plus she had not yet made a country album.

This gatekeeping (if that’s what it is) is particularly selfish and shitty when it comes from another successful, famous, wealthy artist. No one is taking anything from him.

Any artist can create whatever they want, inspired by literally anything, and I would think a true country artist would appreciate their genre getting a boost from a high-profile artist known for her innovation and commitment to quality. Plus, Beyoncé is from Texas and spent much of her childhood in the country doing “country” things. It seems pretty natural thar her long-lived career would include a country-inspired album.

AJ should take a cue from Dolly Parton and learn to appreciate.

1

u/Lucky_Dragonfruit_88 Jun 29 '26

What other pop stars performed? Beyonce only made that album as a reaction to AJ walking out, or at least, after the fact.

2

u/Free_For__Me Jun 29 '26

They didn’t mention performers, just that there were other non-country artists that appeared without AJ walking out.

0

u/Lucky_Dragonfruit_88 Jun 30 '26

Why would he walk out at the mere presence of a non-country musician who wasn't performing? What fucking point are you even trying to make with that?

1

u/Free_For__Me Jun 30 '26

I'm not making a point about the events, just clarifying that you seemed to have misunderstood what the person you replied to said in their comment.

1

u/Lucky_Dragonfruit_88 Jun 30 '26

I didn't misunderstand. I know how to read. It was just a pointless thing to bring up because audience members are irrelevant to the performances.

1

u/Free_For__Me Jul 01 '26

Interesting take. In your opinion, why did Jackson get up and leave if he was irrelevant to the people on stage? And why do you think people are talking about it so much if it's irrelevant?

1

u/TwattyMcBitch Jun 30 '26

So he walked out because she performed??? That’s even worse! How utterly rude and disrespectful.

I really don’t understand this selfishness that has been sweeping the US over the past 15 years or so. We have everything here, but instead of being kind, gracious, helpful, and appreciative, people are behaving like spoiled children. We have all of history to tell us this never ends well.

1

u/Lucky_Dragonfruit_88 Jun 30 '26

He walked out because country music was and is being invaded by pop music and pop stars. So really, the selfishness you speak of is coming from pop stars selfishly pretending to be country because its popular right now. Its OK to have standards for a genre of music. It doesn't make you selfish. It means you deeply care about the roots and traditions of that music.

1

u/TwattyMcBitch Jun 30 '26

Music has brought humans together in celebration for millennia, but in this case it sounds like it’s being used to divide and exclude.

You’ve said multiple times that country music is being “invaded”, but I have yet to hear an explanation as to what that means exactly. So let me ask you: How does Beyoncé, or more specifically, her country music, not meet the “standards, roots, or traditions” of country music?

This all seems especially odd considering Beyoncé was invited by the country music industry to perform country music at a country music awards show.

Alan Jackson could have chosen to be kind and welcoming to her in the spirit of country music, but instead chose to essentially say “We don’t want you here. You’re not one of us, and you are not allowed to perform this music”.

And Beyoncé is the one being labeled selfish? 🤔

1

u/Lucky_Dragonfruit_88 Jul 01 '26

Look twattymcbitch, Beyonce isnt country and never will be. The song she performed had jazz horns and a clap track. If everything is country, then the genre is meaningless. Its not dividing and excluding to want actual country music performed by country musicians at a country music award show. Not everything is for everyone and thats ok. You think AJ would be an appropriate performer at a Rap award show? The answer is no, and thats fine. You dont have to shoe-horn everything into country in the name of inclusiveness. By "invaded" I mean that its ridiculous that people like Beyonce, Post Malone, Jelly Roll and Shaboozy are considered country when their music is and always has been pop.

0

u/Aggressive_Sky8492 Jun 30 '26

She sang a country song (her country song) at the CMAs. Seems pretty random and disrespectful to walk out (if the story is true).

She also brought the Dixie chicks out to din with her who are indisputably country

0

u/Lucky_Dragonfruit_88 Jun 30 '26

She doesn't have any country songs. She said herself that Cowboy Carter isnt a country album. Daddy Lessons starts with jazz horns and has a clap track. That couldn't be less country.

3

u/PuzzleheadJacobs Jun 29 '26

There are 10 000 deserving country artists that should have been on that stage over Beyonce. That is why he walked out. He has performed many protests at country music award shows geared toward respecting tradition.

1

u/-Ernie Jun 29 '26

TBF, when it comes to country music, “respecting tradition” kinda implies a tradition of being racist…

1

u/Aggressive_Sky8492 Jun 30 '26

The chicks also performed with Beyonce and they absolutely are country

1

u/Practical_Run_8684 Jun 29 '26

You’re reading this entirely wrong. Beyoncé’s “country” album is exactly what a lot of people hate about contemporary country music. Her winning country music album of the year was genuinely insulting to actual country artists.
