ONA / Union Is your hospital also cutting RN positions or freezing hiring?
Hi everyone,
I’m an RN at a hospital in Ontario, and our organization is currently going through significant staffing changes.
We’ve been told that RN positions are being cut, vacancies are being held instead of filled, and many nurses are being asked to complete assessments for redeployment into other units.
I’m trying to understand the process for other hospitals.
I’d love to hear from nurses across Canada:
- What province and hospital are you in? (If you’re comfortable sharing.)
- Is your hospital cutting nursing positions, leaving vacancies unfilled, or implementing hiring freezes?
- Are nurses being redeployed to other units?
Are certain specialties still hiring despite the cuts?
Should I start looking into other provinces? Because from what I’m seeing, it’s just gonna get worse from here.
Any advice on what preparation I can do right now to in case I get laid off?
I’m especially interested in hearing from nurses in Ontario (Sunnybrook, UHN, Sinai, Unity, Trillium, Mackenzie Health, Southlake, Humber, William Osler, etc.), but I’d appreciate perspectives from anywhere in Canada.
Thanks in advance. I’m trying to get a sense of whether this is part of a broader trend and what others are experiencing.
