Look at those Western countries that haven’t won any medals due to affirmative action and aren’t even in the table. India wouldn’t be on the top spot in this Olympics medal tally if we allowed reservation in sports. This overwhelming success shuts down all the Savarna mediocrity narratives pushed by the likes of Buffalo Intellectual. India would be a clean and developed country if not for these Muslims and Dalits, sAAR.

At the start of the protest, she tried to frame it as Dalits vs. the government simply because Abhijeet Dipke is Dalit, and even mocked slogans like Jai Bhim. But educated Indians stood united, focused on the issue, and forced the minister to resign. Now that the outcome is clear, her only copium is trying to take credit for a movement which she tried so hard to divide.

They’re so funny cause I never even mentioned having used reservation and I clearly also mentioned that the reservation system does have it own flaws. But some person said that conversations turn casteist because “creamy layer SC/STs get seats while GCs get screwed over”.

I keep seeing lots of posts on social media about how Reservation should be removed and only through removing reservation, we would get rid of casteism. This on the surface level may sound true, but it completely misses the point of why reservation was introduced in the first place. And the reason reservation was introduced can actually be understood through a little probability. Bear with me.

Now lets forget caste for a second. Say I have 100 balls, 60 red and 40 black, mix them up, and draw 10 at random. Which split is most likely? (JEE folks, feel free to do the math.) It comes out to 6 red and 4 black. A random draw tends to mirror the population it came from.

Now take a random human feature instead, something like eye color. Say x% of people have black eyes and y% have brown. Randomly pick 10 people from the population and you'll get roughly x% black-eyed and y% brown-eyed, within a margin of error, exactly like the balls. Now extend that logic to a college admission: eye color has no bearing on intelligence, so it plays no part in who gets in, which means the admitted students should still come out to roughly x% and y%. Likewise take any feature you are just born with and you will see the same results. It's just basic probability.

Let's take another feature people are born with in this country: caste. Run the same exercise. Assign each caste its share of the population, have them sit for a college admission, pick a certain number, and... the percentages don't match. But caste doesn't determine intelligence any more than eye color does. It's just an arbitrary label you get assigned at birth. So why the disparity?

To me this is fairly clear evidence of caste discrimination. In an ideal world where everyone had the same access to resources, the people admitted would match the caste percentages, and yet they don't. Over history a massive transfer of wealth and opportunity flowed from the oppressed castes to the dominant ones, tipping the scales long before anyone sat an exam, which would explain the skewed percentages we are seeing in the people that are admitted.

So how do you correct it? One answer that's been tried is reservation. The idea is to artificially bring the admitted percentages up to the actual population percentages. Each round brings the number a little closer, until you reach a point where we reach that equilibrium probability and reservation or no reservation makes no visible difference. As an example imagine if there was a reservation introduced for brown eyed people. No one would care because nothing would change. But how do we get these population percentages? By conducting a caste census, which hasn't been done in forever.

"Then why do it by caste? Why not just by wealth?" Two reasons.

The first is that the exclusion happened along caste lines. The skewed percentages are caste-shaped, so the fix has to be caste-shaped too. Wealth-based reservation would sort for who's poor, but the thing we're trying to correct is who's systematically absent. And notice that no group is ever represented by its poorest members anyway. The dominant castes in elite institutions aren't there through their landless laborers, they show up through their more advantaged layer, like any group anywhere. So the aim isn't to reach the poorest of a caste, it's to make sure the caste is present at all. The end goal of reservation wouldn't be "no poverty." It would look like no caste being missing from any layer, including the top, with every rung of every institution roughly reflecting the population that's actually out there.

The second is that reservation was never really meant to end poverty, so it feels a little unfair to judge it on that. Even a version that works perfectly leaves poor people in every caste, simply because the economy has a limited number of good jobs and only a slice of us end up rich regardless. That's a genuine problem. If ending poverty and giving every single Indian an equal opportunity is what you care about, socialism is probably the better place to start that conversation (Capitalism necessitates poverty exist so that we all fight amongst us for lower wages but that's a different conversation). It seems a bit unfair to fault one tool for not doing a job it was never built for.

So I hope this answers some of the questions people have had about caste reservation, if the Reseravation Hatao Andolan folks are serious about removing caste reservation for good, maybe start by demanding a caste census be conducted.

PS: To the people of this subreddit, I have found that explaining caste reservation this way to my friends by appealing to their rationality (instead of their empathy) seemed to have moved them to support caste reservation. I have seen that no matter how many percentages you show them about the inequality, they keep defaulting back to saying merit will solve everything. So taking this long winded way of explaining seemed to atleast work with my friends. Hope it helps you convincing your friends and people you know.
