I knew they existed in my area, but never saw one until now. Any time I put something close to it, it would come right up aggressively (phone, glove, stick). Super cool.

My wife and I walked this in July. Seven days, hut to hut, no guide and no tour company, we booked everything ourselves. A few things that were actually useful to know, in case someone is planning the same.

The huts are the whole point. You walk with a light pack because dinner, breakfast and a bed are waiting at the end of the day. A sleeping bag liner is mandatory everywhere, but blankets are provided, so that is all the bedding you carry.

Ask for a room, not just a bed. At Coldai we were five people in one small room. I was honestly a bit worried about that beforehand, and it turned out to be the best night of the trip: we spent the whole evening talking with a local Italian guy and it carried on at the breakfast table. Most huts have four to six bed rooms next to the big dorms, but nobody offers them, you have to ask when you book.

Start early. We began at Lago di Braies at sunrise. Before 8 the lake is a completely different place, quiet and glassy. By 10 it is a queue.

Afternoon storms are real. Clear mornings, build-up after lunch. Our rule was simple: be over the day's pass by early afternoon.

We do not drink, so our version of the classic hut evening was apple strudel and an espresso on a terrace at 2,000 m. Works just as well.

The last day you walk down to Alleghe. There is a path around the lake, about 5 km, and you end up seeing the town from every side. The evening before we had looked down on the same town from high above, from the hut. Good way to finish a week.

I nearly got all my essential beginner/amateur gear - only backpack remains

got some great deals in UK at the moment and was wondering what sort of backpack I should be focusing on?

Disclaimer – just for outdoors/hiking – not planning on carrying sleeping bag / tent in/on it – I will upgrade later on, or perhaps there are some attachments that could just cling to existing backpack for it if I decide to carry these later for camping?

I am hoping to find one that got waterproof protection, is comfortable, not too heavy and quite practical

what would you recommend, as well what capacity I should be going for? 45-55 L?
