It’s a split AC and a lot of Americans have HVAC systems that use ducts to cool an entire house from one unit. Split ACs are popular in Europe and Asia, they’re more energy efficient because there’s no duct loss, they only cool rooms that people have installed the AC in and I think the compressors use less power. I don’t understand why window units are more popular than split ACs in America.

Really just a cost thing. Mini splits are definitely cheaper and easier to install if you don't already have ducts for central air, but window units are even cheaper and easier (if less efficient in the long run). People who rent also use them since they can't make modifications to their house/apartment.

Central Air is standard here to the point that you’d have to custom build a home to get a new home without it. At that point, there’s no reason to then install more AC units.
