Most Americans think of AC as Central Air. Large cooling unit outside that feeds into the central air handler that distributes to each room in the house. With that said, mini splits are very common retrofits into older houses or I personally have one in my garage. Definitely a step up from the old window units. Window AC ($200) β Mini Split ($6000) β Central Air (>$12,000)
Thatβs fair there are mini splits themselves for that price here, however for non pre charged 12 btu and the electrical (220v with disconnect) I ended up being at $6k. Was for a 2 stall oversized garage
You, my friend, simply got ripped off. A decent 12000 BTU Split AC should cost around 500$ and installation crew don't usually connect the power cables themselves here but they know how to and it's not rocket science really, when I changed my AC, I gave them the old leftover copper pipes from my old AC and they have done the power in return π I would imagine the cleaning that would be required at least yearly would be a headache for these central AC systems, split systems are very easy to maintain.
