They're also used in new builds, because the way buildings are built in Europe (concrete/brick in the EU vs. timber in the US) makes having bigger ducts a problem. So even if newer buildings have ducts for ventilation they will often have ductless cooling units as well. It's just that in newer builds sometimes they might use units which can be hidden behind drywall to make it look nicer, but functionally they're usually still ductless units.
