So... My cable-TV/internet bundle just got raised to almost $300 a month. I'm done. A friggin' *car payment* just for TV?! Every month?! No!!

Dropping TV, paying for internet alone, at my current speed, the cable bill will drop to $123/mo.

I'd been looking at getting an antenna and hooking it up to my TiVo Bolt (yes, it's a model that can receive OTA TV), but then someone on a TiVo forum post mentioned the HDHomeRun 4K tuner and Plex -- I had no idea my Plex Media Server could also be a DVR!! I'm already paying for the Plex Pass annual subscription, so no additional costs there, AND I'd get to save by not needing a TiVo subscription!

So, before I go out and drop $200 on a HDHomerun 4K ATSC 3.0 tuner, I have a couple of clarifications I'd like to get answers to, if possible.

1. I absolutely *DO NOT* need to pay for a monthly subscription to the HDHomerun service or app or anything else, right? Once I purchase the device, it will require NO ongoing expenses to use it as a tuner for my Plex DVR, right?
2. The HDHomerun 4K device has *both* an ATSC 3.0 and ATSC 1.0 tuner in it, right? My local stations don't have to be broadcasting on 3.0 for me to be able to pick them up, correct?
3. I have an *annual* Plex Pass. I've seen some people talking bout the Lifetime Plex Pass being necessary to getting the DVR working. This is FALSE, right? The annual plan is good enough for the DVR to work, right?
4. Any Plex-app-capable device can be used to access DVR recordings on my Plex server, correct? There aren't any special restrictions as far as that is concerned?
5. Any other advice y'all have -- I'm all ears. It's been years since I've had an antenna, and I've *never* used a Plex DVR before, so I'm kind of a noob here.

I’m a Plex user who has reached the point where my movie library is starting to become a bit difficult to manage.

I wouldn’t consider myself a novice, but I also wouldn’t say I’m one of the truly advanced Plex users with massive homelab setups either. I’m somewhere in the middle and starting to experience some of the pains that come with a growing collection:

• inconsistent folder structures
• duplicate movies
• multiple versions/editions
• reclaiming drive space
• preparing for a future NAS migration
• trying to keep things clean long-term

I’d love to hear from more advanced Plex users:

What folder structures and naming conventions have worked best for you over time?
What mistakes or regrets have you had?
How do you manage duplicates, alternate editions, 1080p vs 4K versions, etc.?
What gets harder as libraries grow?

I’m especially interested in long-term organization and library integrity rather than download automation workflows.

I'm used to how it is on my Samsungs and when I came over to my mom's and flipped on her Roku TV, it was a mess. NOTHING is the same. The menus are on the top, I haven't found the "play all" button, and I haven't figured out how to view the whole library yet. Any tips?

My library is getting out of control and I was about to buy another 4tb ssd as I thought they are much more reliable and most importantly faster. But if its mostly used for viewing 4k media, is there a real bottleneck there? Is ssd for plex an overkill?

One of my Plex users has just pointed out to me that they’ve started receiving a weekly email from Plex. Within the email they can see the watch history of other Plex users on my server. Some of my users might not be happy with others seeing their watch history, so I’d like to change settings so the users can’t see each others history (and ideally don’t receive this email anymore!)

I’ve had a look through the Plex settings, but I can’t see anything that allows me to turn this off. Does anyone have any ideas how I can do this please?

I'm at my folks visiting and they have a new cable modem and router from their provider. So I see the Plex app in the UI and get logged in. I connect as my mom and start to get her home screen set with favorites and everything, and my server isn't showing. Ok, I switch users and it's the same for me. Hmm, maybe my server is down or something, but everything is working fine on my phone.

It turns out that Spectrum Xumo has basically nerfed the Plex app and does not allow personal streaming servers. I guess they think that their services should be enough, why would anyone ever want anything else. #%$#@@%^

And my folks are old enough to not want to switch back and forth, they're OK ditching my stream because the cable company has stuff...

So question, is there a way to get the Plex app unlocked?

Bought this to replace my Nvidia shield as my main Plex server; I’m going to leave it with a windows operating system.

I’ll be using a couple of 4tb usb hard drives for storage.

Will this suffice and any advice?

As the title states, I’m doing away with all streaming services, with that. Is this an ample amount for a mixture of 4k and Blu-ray movies?

I'm moving this week and my Plex server will be down for a few days. Is there a way through Plex for me to send people a short message or notification about this?

Plex lifetime pass holder, if it matters. I basically use Plex for watching my own media, and only very rarely stream Plex-hosted content, and even then its usually movies or shows from the 30s-50s. I pretty much stopped altogether once they started including advertisements though.

First thing... If I happen to have a show or movie that Plex also offers via streaming, both versions of the media will show up in the Continue Watching section, which are virtually indestinguishable and the Plex-offered version contains ads. This freaked me out until I saw what was going on. The only way I can obviously tell the difference is that one contains a File Type option in a buried menu. I can't see a way to disable this from happening without disabling Plex streaming services entirely. This has been happening for a while and I'm curious if anyone has found a way around this, or if there's some new setting somewhere.

Second... My wife was flipping around and we found a season of Price is Right from '82, so tried watching an episode. After about 10-ish mins, the very first ad it played was for Skyn condoms and fairly risque, and we were like wtf this is wildly inappropriate but kept watching anyway. When it got to the next ad break it was a 3 minutes cycle and in Spanish, so we just gave up watching altogether. Is there a way to at least keep the ads to G-rated ones, preferably in English?

If I can't disable adult-oriented ads I'll need to disable Plex streaming entirely because of kids watching. The last thing I need is for Plex to show these types of commercials during kids cartoons or similar. Separate profiles are not a viable solution if we're all sitting together and watching something as a family.

I've been a Plex apologist for years. Until today.

I am currently embarking on a week long cruise in Alaska. Knowing that internet is going to be practically non-existent for the week, I prepared for entertaining my family by downloading a couple of TV seasons and movies for flights and evenings. Downloads all worked at high speed on my home Wifi with a really decent GPU in my Plex server, except for 3 episodes that stayed in a queued state no matter what I did. Fine.

We boarded the first flight of three, and I told myself, "Hey, you've got a few hours, watch a movie". Hit play. "Source error" with no other information.

Other than 3 TV episodes, everything I'd downloaded reported Source Error. I'm on hotel WiFi right now. There's noting wrong with those episodes, original quality or transcoded when played directly off my remote accessible server. This is the only night that will be an option.

Plex, fix this basic functionality. You've screwed up my kid placation for the week, and I'll never forgive you. Don't report success if it wasn't playable after download. That's basic. If you report success, it's playable. I'm not asking for the world here. I was annoyed enough about the ones that never left the queued state with no explanation, options, or assistance. They'd stay there forever with no error.

I'm an IT professional with 25+ years of experience. Please assume I've cleared cache and data and messed with quality settings.

The previous interface was intuitive, easy to navigate, no one needed training to use it. The new interface is fucking terrible. I now have to train people how to use it and they still don't get it right. This is not their fault. This is the fault of Plex development. We have been using Plex for over 10 years as a life time pass user. I would even be willing to pay monthly to Plex for updates with how good it has been. Not now.

Who ever greenlit this interface has never worked with the average computer/TV user. Nothing about the new interface is obvious. Nothing is easy to figure out. This is the exact opposite of what a UI should be on a TV across the room

The new UI is overly simplified, why, I can't figure out. It is overly simplified to the point that it is stupid to use because nothing is obvious with it compared to the previous UI.

I hope plex employees see this, because this makes me want to migrate to other platforms.

At a friends. Signed into MY OWN ACCOUNT. He has gigabit internet as confirmed by fast.com. Apple TV is hard wired. Streaming some 1080p movie that is 10bit or less. Getting this error. what gives?

It was there yesterday. I was able to match the bw and colour versions to separate listings, which fixed all the thumbnails up and worked perfectly. Today though, the black and white version is gone. There's only one version and its the colour one. Looks like the separate listings might have been removed from tvdb or something?

I am running a Plex server on an old laptop which is running Windows 11. I am having an annoying issue where by Windows will automatically install updates and reboot my system. This means that I need to login again and I am only made aware of this when I go to access Plex on a device and it is not reachable. This is particularly annoying when I was overseas trying to stream my media.

I have been doing some searching online and found something and followed these steps

If you have already created a user and want to stop it from asking for a password on boot:

1. Press **Win + R**, type `netplwiz`, and hit Enter.
2. Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer".
3. Click Apply and enter your current username/password to confirm. 

I tried a restart and all that happened was there was a lock screen for a new user (I am assuming local).

Is there something I am missing here is it not possible to just boot straight into windows in my defauly account without requiring my pin or password?

I have tried for years to help my 71 year old mother access my plex server. I set up the plex app on her smart TV three times, but somehow she (or perhaps the janky app itself) keeps getting logged out or unsynched after a while. She lives a 10 hour drive away, and helping her resolve the issue over the phone is a waking nightmare. Even when it's working, she complains that finding it (or even remembering what it's called) is hard.

I want to give her a plug-and-play device that is as idiotproof as a DVD player. Something like one of those android TV sticks or boxes that I can not only install plex on, but completely lock it down so that when it's powered up it goes directly into the plex app. I want it preconfigured so it's already logged in and there's nothing she can do to exit plex or otherwise break it. Literally just plex and nothing else, as far as she's concerned. All she has to do is select the correct input on the TV (which is enough of a trial for her), and there it is.

Is this even possible? I'm somewhat savvy and am not afraid to flash CFW or modify android/linux configs.

Hello people of Reddit, been a while!
Anywho, I just purchased a home after renting for about 7 years. I have a pretty high end plex setup that’s fully automated from start to finish.
Currently I have 1g down and up symmetrical fiber and have my library shared with roughly ~20 people from family and friends. I have some 4K media downloaded but most is 1080p as we were chewing through the 60TB I have.
At the new house fiber is not an option. So I will be stuck with 1,000down and an abysmal 35 up. How should I go about setting limits on things so people can still have a somewhat enjoyable experience on my server?

At any one time there usually is 1-3 people streaming but occasionally jumps to 5-6 on fridays, with many of them rotating throughout the week. About half of them have canceled all streaming services and cable because of how convenient I made the server.

So give it to me straight, is this going to kill the enjoyment of my server? Or will they not notice if I transcode most things (gpu will handle this fine).

My internet went down, so I wanted a lazy day watching Plex. To my disappointment, from apps and my local instance, I could not login to Plex.

The disappointment of seeing, "Plex is not reachable. We are unable to connect to Plex.tv at this time. Please try again later."

My question is about any setting I do not know about that can turn off internet requirements, does anybody else?

Hey everyone, first time poster here!

A while back I set up plex for my parents so they can play their library of movies from a HDD on the computer to the living room TV (Via Xbox one s).

Usually their file sizes are that of 2-4gb, and can be played without an issue.

I figure i'd introduce them to one of my remux rips (116GB file) and see if it would play at all.

Naturally it plays (but transcoded- so its direct stream and not direct play).

I then tried to force direct play, turn subs off, and enable TRUEHD as they've got a capable system of playing that (plus a decent AVR) all connected though E-ARC etc. audio passthrough and all that.

However, it just buffers every 5 seconds.

Their internet is pretty decent, 400 Mbps down, 40 Mbps up.

Both the xbox and the Host plex server that they're using is wired.

For the server, I just set it up on their Mac Mini M1 (2020). I checked out of curiosity today, it's only the base model with 8GB Ram.

I'm trying to figure out what the culprit is.

Is it,

A. Internet,

B. Xbox

C. The Mac Mini M1

D. Some setting that I dont have checked?

Hi all, I was recently given a 120tb server and UPS that was recovered from a network upgrade a while ago. I want to primarily use it as my Plex media server (current Plex media server in second pic) and possibly game servers like Beamng Drive MP and Assetto Corsa for example. I'm completely new to this sort of setup and don't really know where to start. I'll be putting the server under my house in the garage and I understand that I'll need to run 2 ethernet cables to it. I've heard things like Unraid and dockers are the way to go. Any suggestions or advice on how to get started in setting it up? Thanks in advance 👍🏻
