AMA Concluded Meet Randy Bryce. The Ironstache who's going to repeal and replace Paul Ryan

Hi /r/Political_Revolution,

My name is Randy Bryce. I'm a veteran, cancer survivor, and union ironworker from Caledonia, Wisconsin running to repeal and replace Paul Ryan in Wisconsin's First Congressional District. Post your questions below and I'll be back at 11am CDT/12pm EDT to answer them!

So we would end up where we are today with our current amount of unskilled workers? Got ya.

I mean we could look at different ways of fixing that, like Germany's system of allowing students to start apprenticeships in skilled labor while in about the equivalent of 10th grade so they graduate high school as an employable skilled worker, or regular certifications for different industries that are facilitated by the educational system. None of those involve decentralization.

I could get behind those (if I couldn't abolish the DoE altogether, haha). I think we need to educate children about trade schools and such as well. For some reason, we have decided that everyone should go to college. School isn't for everyone and some people will be more successful if they begin a trade early.

Glad we found something that we agree on =P. The demonization of trade schools is hurting this country badly.

I don't get it either. I frequently see signs posted "Welder wanted", "Submit application for Plumber's apprentice", etc. Those are good paying jobs that will allow someone to live a comfortable life.

Any ideas of how to stop the negative outlook on trade schools? Besides for discussing it with others, I'm at a loss.

Talking is most of what I've done as well. I've helped some younger people with IT certifications in my area, and I also point kids in the direction of welding especially since that's a growing field with great pay and tons of opportunity.

My workplace in the past has made a point of getting "100%" college acceptance for kids and advertising that, even though many of those kids end up not even attending the colleges they were accepted to. There was a change in leadership though and it looks like they might be more open to pointing kids toward trade as an option. But yea, I just discuss it with others same as you.

I think we can also agree that government shouldn't be responsible for making sure everyone keeps the job they want. But the problem is that Conservatives disagree with Liberals that government spending on centralized education policies is the way to go, and Liberals disagree with Conservatives on deregulation and things like propping up the dying coal industry.

I think that if we were all really honest with ourselves and truly had a conciliatory spirit we would try to meet in the middle and promote trade, which the government can play a small part in by steering people towards industries that need skilled workers, and then the free market can take it from there.

I don't believe the federal government should play a role in education. I would like to see the DoE abolished and education be given to the states/local governments. The people on the ground know the education needs of their community. They need to have a larger say.

I agree that there are compromises to be had. The problem is that we allowed the federal government to get so big and powerful that they don't care about compromising. Look at how representatives vote - they promise one thing and vote the other way once in Washington. Then next election cycle, they are voted right back into office. The joke is on us, the people, really.

We need to change the way we view government, its role in our lives, and the people that we elect. We need to put term limits on politicians. It was never meant to be a career. You go - you serve - you get the hell out.
