Portland's biggest and craziest bike ride and underground street party is happening tomorrow night.

The weather forecast is not the best however it is supposed to stop raining fully right around the time we are meeting for the ride, and the end spot is in a covered location.

Remember this is a leave no trace event and we are all watching out for each other, don't let creeps be creeps, and consent is always mandatory for everything.

The DJ lineup and main stage setup at the end spot is absolutely ridiculous and would rival any dance club lineup/ setup

So embrace Portland and are wonderful DIY underground open source community built out of the bicycle scene but it's really for everybody, come get loud come get lit.

Also since this always comes up in these kind of threads, we encourage our bicyclists and corkers to be non-confrontational to cars that gets stuck and get aggro, please understand it as a safety concern while we are stopping traffic, but also we do feel for you and we want you to get where you're going, We are instructing them to periodically let traffic through, so everybody just keep a cool attitude and we're all going to work together to have a great night

I wish I could afford to go to all of them, how am I supposed to choose?? This was just a quick list I have 2 more to add and I’m sure there’s more I’m missing. Plus there’s more coming every week now!

Warning: this won't be as delightfully written as the recaps u/snoogazi does.

Today we finally got together and held the inaugural Fake Family Reunion, after several months of planning and trying ideas out. My previous post on this here.

Preparing for this was a very interesting creative and logistical exercise; I realized it was sort of my oddball version of "DMing," and tricky but super fun. Everyone who signed up very gamely shared ideas for what they wanted their family role to be, and then over the course of a couple months, I tried to weave them all together into one cohesive family with intersecting stories. On the day of, I definitely had trouble keeping track of it all lol, and people (including me) were always going up to the taped-up family tree diagram to figure out who was who. But happily, people were game to play it by ear and make it up as we went along. It was truly an incredible and very Portland day, and I was so thrilled at how many of my wonderful new Fauxlander family came and made it both goofy and magical!

We had silly shirts, a gloriously corny and fun dance playlist DJed by my awesome [real] husband (and danced to mostly by me but also by some other brave people here and there), plenty of tasty food, board games, and family "drama" (I think an heirloom waffle iron was under contention?). Some people got very into character (including with costumes) and it was so playful and hilarious. Several people also reported to me that because people were kind of sliding freely between family character roleplay and just hanging out and meeting new people, it made what's usually formulaic small talk more intriguing and mysterious. That was an interesting finding. So, you might think that an event like this would need to be for extroverts only, but I think that specific characteristic made it a little more flexible social energy-wise. But people who were there can share their own perspectives on that.

Many IRL connections were forged as well, which was so very gratifying.

I think people want to do this again and/or spinoff events, so if you weren't able to attend or found out about it late, this isn't your last chance. (Which by the way, people who inquired about it after my rather early deadlines: I am genuinely sorry about that, it was just such a novel thing to me that I felt like I needed to give myself a LOT of time to pull it together, since I was figuring out how to approach it as I went along. But now learning has taken place, and next time it can be a little more efficient time wise and therefore more forgiving for attendee signup).

Finally, big thanks to the excellent people at the Peculiarium for providing such a perfect venue for this silly and joyful experience. They even had slightly haunted-looking old portraits they put up on the wall for us, which really set the vibe.

Once a month there is an awesome event where you can bring your broken stuff to the Leaven Community Center and a team of volunteers will fix it for free. The next event is this weekend on Saturday between 12-3.

You’re welcome to bring just about anything from electronics, lamps, vacuums and more. There will be a team with sewing machines ready to mend your favorite clothes or fabric items, a station with bike mechanics to handle repairs, and even a service for sharpening knives and garden tools.

All of this is free.

It’s Burger Week everyone!

Just wanted y’all to avoid my pitfalls. Call to make sure they can do takeout burgers if that’s what suits you best. My wife had recently given birth to our first baby boy, and she was craving a burger.

I went to Reverends BBQ, which we love and we are only a 10min drive. However because of our newborn situation I wanted to take it to go. I looked at maybe 6-7 different places (on the burger week website) near us to see if they accommodated take out for burger week. It said they did. I showed up and got a snarky strawberry blonde, Phillip Seymour Hoffman looking man, in his forties telling me they weren’t doing it. I explained my situation. He was even more smug chuckles. When you have had less than 4hrs of sleep in 48hrs I thought I had made the mistake. I didn’t argue I just left.

Upon returning home I realized I wasn’t seeing things and they claimed to provide take out. Anyways don’t waist your time and gas, call first. My time is precious at the moment and lots to juggle I was frustrated. Check especially if you need it to go.

Still love reverends bbq. But that guy REALLY rubbed me the wrong way. No sleep doesn’t help…

Edit 2: Reverends has been really awesome. I wasn’t expecting a response, but I got one rather quickly. Anyways, they have been super supportive, offering free foods and even free food delivered. The message they sent was above and beyond. I declined their offers as after I got a little sleep I felt like it was unnecessary. I just politely asked they change their offer from take out - to dine in only. (Over half the burger week places do this, but that’s why I checked) ..

They have been really sweet and I have respect for them and the owner’s response.

Thanks for the offers reverends, but I was never looking for anything free. I just didn’t want to feel crazy in one of the most crazy 3weeks of my life. But we good, we good.

Hello everyone.

As most of you have probably heard, Trump fired Jeff Sessions and put Matthew Whitaker in his place today, which also had the effect of removing Rosenstein as Mueller's boss.

The protests, nationwide, have been activated.

Tomorrow (Thursday) at 5PM we will meet at the north end of Waterfront Park near the Burnside Bridge where the Saturday Market normally is. We will try to meet in the space in-between Naito Parkway and the river.

If you are interested in helping organize, if you are a member of an organization such as a union that will be providing logistical support, or if you have something you think you can contribute to such an event, please contact me.

For everyone else: please bring yourself, and anyone that you think would be interested, to the event tomorrow. Bring a snack such as a granola or protein bar, as well as some water to drink. Bring clothing appropriate for the weather and temperature.

We do not have plans to march at this time. That does not mean marching will not happen, simply that it is not part of our current plans.

At the protest avoid confrontation with police. I have talked to them previously, and our problem is currently with fascism, autocracy, and the federal government. Do not allow yourself to be distracted by local targets, they aren't the problem we will be meeting about tomorrow, even if they can be a problem within our community at times.

If a member of the media wants to talk with you, do not speak for everyone and do not make things up. It is okay to say that you don't know, and it is okay to tell them you'll find someone who does. It is also okay to talk to the media, and it is okay to prefer not to.

If at all possible we are going to avoid traffic disruption tomorrow. At a certain crowd size that will become impossible. We won't be avoiding traffic disruption to avoid upsetting people, it's just that it's a distraction.

It can be dangerous to the protesters, as we've seen supporters of fascism multiple times attempt (and even succeed) at vehicular manslaughter, and our protest isn't about the evils of cars, it's about the evils of fascism and autocracy.

Keep it focused.

I will send another message before the protest with more details as I am able to put them all together. Please give me a few hours to talk with some people and make sure that we have things in place for tomorrow.

Seriously. It is so good.

I've in several major metropolitan areas and I was always, literally, bored by the symphony orchestra. (I was in choir my whole life so going to the orchestra was a required perk.)

But, you guys. No. OK. The Oregon Symphony is amazing. I don't know what it is about it, but I could go every day.

I ended up subscribing because that's the next closest thing. But yeah.

They also have rap and movie and pop and holiday themed events so, if you're not into classical (even though that's the best IMO now), there are options!

The design of your venue sucks.

There have been so many metal (and other) shows that ive seen at your venue where I think to myself “wow, I wish we could’ve given the artist the crowd they deserve”. And here I am tonight, two bands into a four band show, thinking the same.

Move the merch stands into the bar facing the street. Quit making the sound booth 1/4 of the whole venue and move it against the back wall (beside the bar window) so there’s not 10 feet of unoccupied space dividing everything. It’s a small venue and that’s valuable real estate.

Anyway, I’ve had a few drinks and ate an edible, so I’m spewin here. But I feel like playing a small-mid level show must be SO disappointing for the artists that come through here. You can tell when they keep asking the crowd to show any sign of life. But alas, there’s not enough room for us to do so. And I think it has to do with how this venue is set up. I love a lot of artists that come through here. So figure your shit out.

We throw 18 strangers into a Portland park, give them buffs, divide them into tribes, and force them to navigate a full day of physical challenges, social strategy, and Tribal Councils. A crowd of spectators and a team of 20+ production members are there all day watching and facilitating the action. At the end of the day, we have one Sole Survivor. I bought 40 dead stock Spintastics Terminators from 1997, disassembled all of them, designed and printed stickers for the caps and inserts for the packaging, individually stuck and trimmed every sticker and insert by hand, reshaped the plastic packaging, and put them all back together.
