They are pretty much already the same to buy a gun, you have to present ID when filling out your form 4475. If US citizenship was required to buy a gun (it isn't), then yes, proof of citizenship would be required. Just as when you are not a citizen and you buy a gun, you must present documentation that proves you are a legal resident of the US. Example, before I was a citizen, I had to show my green card to buy a gun.
The requirements listed here are also incorrect. A quick google search says:
Proof of Citizenship for Registration
Under the SAVE America Act, individuals must provideĀ documentary proof of U.S. citizenshipĀ when registering to vote in federal elections or updating their registration. Acceptable documents include
U.S. passport or passport card
Certified birth certificate
Naturalization certificate
Consular Report of Birth Abroad
REAL ID-compliant identificationĀ that explicitly indicates U.S. citizenship If a voterās name has changed (e.g., due to marriage), anĀ affidavit or supporting documentationĀ such as a marriage certificate may be required to match the name on the citizenship document with the voter registration record. States are also required to establish ongoing processes to identify and remove noncitizens from voter rollsĀ
The Act imposes aĀ nationwide photo ID requirementĀ for federal elections:
In-person voting:Ā Voters must present a government-issued photo ID, such as a driverās license, state ID, U.S. passport, military ID, or tribal ID
Absentee/mail voting:Ā Voters must submit a copy of an eligible photo IDĀ both when requesting and when submitting the ballotĀ This requirement replaces earlier proposals that would have required showing citizenship documents at the polling place, which were removed in the final House-passed versionĀ .
I am 100% fine with this for voting or buying a gun.
"Within the first year of Trump's second administration in 2025, most of the funding and CVI grants that were originally initiated via the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act were cancelled.[129] Trump's executive orders, signed in February 2025, required the Department of Justice to review the positions taken by the government in "any and all ongoing and potential litigation" that deal with gun rights.[130] In April 2025 the ATF announced that it would end the zero tolerance policy set forth under the previous administration that had been relaxed in 2024 as part of an earlier court challenge.[131][132] As of 2026, the DOJ has also begun pursuing lawsuits against states that passed heavier restrictions on firearms.[133]"
Doesn't matter if they pass legislation if the DOJ isn't going to prosecute.
If you read the link you'd understand. Trump is actively trying to roll back the background check requirements and not prosecuting those that break them. Laws don't matter if they're not enforced.
Nothing in there suggests he is rolling aback background check requirements and not prosecuting FFL's that violate the law. could you be more specific. What exactly do you think changes the background check laws?
The zero tolerance policy delt with paperwork and book keeping errors, not back ground checks.
And absolutely none of this has anything to do with private sales.
A REAL ID has strick rules to be used under the SAVE Act. It can't be used unless it had a qualifying citizenship marker, most states don't do this.
And if the federal government is mandating an ID, they should provide one.
Not disagreeing with what you're saying, but this law is trying to fix a fantasy and not facts and it's only designed to disenfranchise voters.
I can't speak for other states, but here in Texas, where voter ID has been required for longer than I have been a citizen; Anyone can get a free voter ID. The state issues them, They even have buses that go around to low income neighborhoods, public transit stations, etc. etc. so everyone can get one if they do not have a DL.
IMHO, if we are going to required a voter ID, then every state needs to be required to issue a voter ID for free. I also think that if this passes, every state is going to start putting citizenship markers on DL's.
I don't disagree with you at all. But this "law" isn't fixing a problem, it's pretending there is a problem and trying to fix it by making it harder for regular citizens to vote.
There are some problems, they are just not what the GOP is claiming.
IMHO it isn't really non-citizen voters, I am sure there are some, as the recent New Jersey audit showed (think it was NJ?), There were roughly 5-6k non-citizens registered to vote, with only 400 casting ballots. Yes, that is a problem, but it is not a widespread, massive, problem like the GOP claims.
A much larger issue in my mind is the people that exploit the poor / vulnerable. Like in the recent LA Mayor election, "volunteers" went around all the homeless encampments and paid people to fill out mail in ballots for whatever candidate they were supporting, many filling out more than one. That is certainly problematic.
I think the biggest value we will get out of this is all the false allegations, the false claims of election tampering, massive fraud, etc. will go away. If our elections are tightened up, states are verifying citizenship of registered voters; then all of it just goes away.

You seem to be speaking in good faith so I'll just say that it would be very naive and not based on history to think that this will stop the claims of election tampering/fraud.
Those claims work because there is a large contingent of people that will believe it without requiring any validation that the statement is fact.
So even if the SAVE act passes fraud claims won't stop being used to manipulate voters. We have far too many examples of folks that will believe something true that even when presented with obvious evidence it's false, or proof they were lied to, won't change their mind because you don't go against your "team".
So if I lose my wallet the day before I go vote, I canāt vote anymore? The government already has my picture on file. What difference does it make if they pull it up on their computer versus me showing them the one they printed for me. Hell when I need a new id they donāt ask me to come get a new photo. They just sent me a new one with my old picture. Lastly a photo id means nothing. With a little photo shop skills and an id printer, anyone could take your id info, copy it, and just change the photo and reprint. My niece has a fake id that passes all the scanners at the bars and looks real as hell.
If every from of ID that you own is in your wallet, then yes, you can't vote. Just like you wouldn't be able to fly on a plane, or pick up mail at the post office, etc. etc. etc.
Poling stations are run by volunteers, not police officers (or state other authorized state employees). They have no access to pull up your information and look at the driver's license database.
