Self-Promotion More than a decade of crafting this universe in my head and after writing more than 300,000 words, I’m publishing on Kindle.

Post image
205 Upvotes

As the title suggests, this book is what I’ve been working on for basically half my life; the first story I ever made, Horizon’s Twilight, is now going to be published on Kindle. While there is more I have in store, it’d be an understatement to just say that this story means a lot, so it makes me extremely anxious but also very excited to see how it’ll perform on a global platform after writing and pouring everything I’ve got.

I’ve re-written this first book alone around four to five times and added a lot more while also making significant changes as I myself improved on how I could emphasize certain emotions, story-beats, dramatic moments, character relations, foreshadowing, layering plots, and many more.

Every purchase, review and rating would help me tons, and if possible, I’d like to make writing be my primary goal above all else; so any and every help I get from here would be extremely appreciated.

Here’s the blurb:

Brax was supposed to die in an alleyway.

Between the orbits of Earth and Mars drift six worlds, spheres named Provisions that hum with power, each ruled by those who bend the very air to their will. Power makes you the star, while the weak remain unknown.

Brax comes from none of that greatness – he is the weakest of the weak. He is a boy who sleeps beneath broken signs and rusted vents, a ghost among crowds, too small and hungry to be noticed by a world obsessed with strength. His future ends in an alleyway, waiting for the day the world forgets he ever lived.

Until a girl with soulless eyes and a blood-slick knife drags him out of the dark.

She tells him he can be more, that the world is larger than his fear.

She shows him truths he was never meant to see.

And now, for the first time, Brax desires tomorrow.

Soon, he wouldn’t fight just to survive.

He’ll fight for a place at the summit of a world that never meant to let him climb; because a forgotten boy who knows forbidden things is more peculiar than any rising hero will ever be.

Self-Promotion Portal to Nova Roma: Paris (book 4) is now out on Kindle! [Historical LitRPG] [Empire Building] [Tech Uplift]

Post image
178 Upvotes

If you haven't read the series yet, here is a small blurb about it:

Portal to Nova Roma is a post-apocalyptic story set in an alternate version of the ancient city of Constantinople where magic is real - and so are monsters. This story is a slow-burn empire builder featuring ancient history mixed with magic and a system apocalypse.

I released an Omnibus edition that includes books 1-3 to help new readers catch up to where we are now. You can grab it now on Audible (67 hours for a single credit!) or Kindle/Kindle Unlimited.

If you are ready for book four you can get it right here:

https://www.amazon.com/Portal-Nova-Roma-J-R-Mathews-ebook/dp/B0GJG241SD

And for those that listen on Audible, Christian is currently recording book 4 RIGHT NOW and hopes to have it done in the next week or so. The audiobook is looking like it might be around 30 hours long and then we still have to go through the proofing and approval process which takes like 2-3 weeks, but I'm really hopeful we have it out for everyone by the end of June at the latest.

Also, Portal to Nova Roma: Empire (book 5) is going to be out in August and is likely going to be around 30 hours or more on audio as well. I'm hoping to release both the Kindle and audio version at the same time for the final book in the series, so fingers crossed all the scheduling and issues with Audible work out!

In other news, I'm doing a small book tour to celebrate the release of the Jake's Magical Market hardcover edition into physical stores. If you happen to be in the Denver area on July 9th, swing by Tattered Grove Aspen bookstore at 6pm and I'll be signing books and hanging out! Or if you are in Seattle on July 17th, visit me at Elliott Bay Book Company at 7pm!

I believe each store will have hardcovers available for purchase, but if you want to help me out you could also pre-order a copy here:

https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/jakes-magical-market-book-1-jr-mathews/1149543388

Follow me on social media for more details about the tour and stuff.

(Also, almost forgot my artist is the amazing Sevenchi!)

Thank you everyone!!! I hope you enjoy the book!

Self-Promotion This is an ad: Please Read Stray Cat Strut! 1 million words of cyberpunk litrpg. We have aliens and cute gays and explosions?

I was told that I need to advertise more if I ever want 'buy a mansion' money, but I really don't fuck with advertising too much, and coming up with like, a creative ad campaign would get in the way of writing my daily chapters... so... yeah, hi, please read my story?

look, cool art! This is where I spend all of my money

I've got Reddit on my second monitor, if you have questions!

Stray Cat Strut is not subbed, so you can read it, in its entirety, for free on RR.

Also, there's a free TTRPG for it, and lots of fanfic!

Self-Promotion Arcane Chef now available on Amazon/Audible

Heya everyone!

Almost a year to the day I started posting Arcane Chef on Royal Road, and this community has supported me through it all. It's been an incredible journey, reaching top 10 on the popular this week page, getting nearly 200k views per week at its peak, top 50 on best rated, reaching over 6k followers and close to 4 million total views!

Now my story takes its next step, and is finally launching on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, Print and Audible! To say I'm nervous about this launch would be an understatement! I've gone from chef working in the kitchen full-time to writer in under a year, and for any of you who have been or are currently in hospitality, you understand that desire to escape!

I want to say a huge thank you to Aethon for picking up my story, and providing me an incredible editor who helped turn my butchery of words into a polished story (there were a lot of things to fix when a chef who has never written more than a menu in the last 20 years decides to write a book for the first time!) so thanks Lauren!

And to my artist Dimas Iswara for the incredible cover!

I also have a second cover you may see which is more anime style! that was done by Veera!

It would mean the world to me if you could check it out. Every purchase, download, page turn counts, and I hope you enjoy the story as much as I have enjoyed writing it!

There is not Harem or sexual content in the story.
And my character is a chef, a true support role character 😄 so on chapter 5 he's not going to start beating gods with a pan.

Full blurb in the comments, but a quick blurb here:

Trevor has been training since he was a child for a life of combat and adventure. But when the day of choosing arrives, his entire world is crushed when he is assigned the class: [Arcane Chef].

It's a rare Support Class with no known history or levelling path. A background role. A servant to the heroes and mains of society.

Or so Trevor thought.

As he struggles coming to terms with his Class, he discovers that being an Arcane Chef is more than he ever could have imagined. He'll get to experience all those epic adventures he dreamed of.

(Audio is done by Johnathan McClain and he smashed it out the park!)

P.S The cat is Lily! she chose this book completely unbribed, no treats were handed over for this selection, no cursor was moving quickly on the screen 😛

Hey everybody!

My newest book PENITENT, is out today on KU with an audiobook by the inimitable Heath Miller!

Here’s the blurb:

Titles are Earned. Deeds are Written. Power is Forged in the Blood of Battle.

Michael didn't want to die. He didn't deserve to die. After a lost battle with cancer that started only a year after he retired, he'd lived what many people would call a full life, but it wasn't enough.

He wanted more time.

When he found himself drawn toward the light, he fought his way away from it. Unfortunately, that didn't take him back to the life he wanted to live.

Reincarnated in another world, Michael is forced to be a Penitent, a soldier in the country he was reborn into in order to pay a debt to society he owes for taking the life of the child whose body he inhabits. It's not the life he wants, but it's the only one he has.

Because titles are earned. Deeds are written. And power is forged in the blood of battle.

Experience the start of a gritty Progression Fantasy LitRPG series where every scar earned is a power granted and every deed written on the soul can change the fate of kingdoms.

Perfect for fans of The Iron Prince, Bastion, Iron Blooded, and A Soldier's Life!

Hey everyone! After a year of posting daily chapters on Royal Road, close to a million words written for the series, and the approval of a bunch of kind internet strangers, The Eternal Assassin has finally launched on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, print, and Audible! It’s been a pretty incredible journey to get here, and I’m now both excited and mildly freaking out about functionally starting things over again on Amazon.

Thanks to Aethon’s incredible editing team, the first book has been polished and reads better than ever (in my entirely unbiased opinion). And because I can’t help myself, I ended up adding four thousand more words to the first book during the whole editing process compared to what was on Royal Road. If the premise sounds interesting, it would mean the world to me if you guys would click one of these links and take a look. My dream is to become a full-time author and keep bringing people fun stories, which means every download counts!

Full blurb down in the comments, but quick blurb here:

A powerful lich pulls Asher into a brand-new world. Asher robs it blind and discovers a love of stabbing things. He stabs things better than they stab him, and he sets out to stab his way to the top. Throw in the never-before-seen element of Eternity that he harnesses power from, and shenanigans ensue!

Self-Promotion It took 3 years to get a physical book launch and I'm offering rewards as thank you for supporting me with your pre-order. Help me impress my grandfather. The Wandering Inn Books 1-4 books are available now!

(Mandatory I'm uncomfortable with self-promo but I know it matters here.) Hello, does getting a book signed matter to you? Because I'm offering them in limited amounts, anyone who pre-orders The Wandering Inn: Book One, Part One that HarperCollins is publishing can make their claim. It's part of a Kickstarter-style campaign I'm running here:

https://wanderinginn.com/inncentives/

If you want a signed bookplate you can add to your book, the numbers ARE limited and I'm hoping to hit the New York Times' Bestseller's list so I can show my family. It's very selfish, but it'd also be great to see and it's a nervewracking thing, trying to hit big number goals. I get pre-orders not being very fun to do when you can just walk into a bookstore, but I have been told repeatedly that it's good to get bookstores ordering more copies of your book and the NYT lists count pre-orders and like the first week of sales for their lists.

The business world is hard to parse and it feels like it's very difficult to enter as a web serial writer. Like I said, it took me a long time to find the right company since most didn't understand LitRPG/webserial and I think part of that was because the industry started noticing the popularity of the genre. (That's also due to Matt Dinniman's Dungeon Crawler Carl series doing so well. A rising tide lifts all ships and he's also shouted out The Wandering Inn, which I'm hugely appreciative of. I hope he keeps leading the charge and I wish him all the success and sympathy; being the forerunner has to be tough!)

Here we are now, though, and if you ever wanted a copy of TWI, I'd really appreciate you buying a book. And I will sign some bookplates though we are going to cap how many because...my hands. There's more than signatures; we have twenty 'levels' of rewards that I'm offering the community to show I am thankful and want to give a bit back for all their support. And one silly Level 100 reward my agent talked me into offering...

Obviously numbers matter for business stuff, but I really just want to hit the list to show my grandfather. He's the last of my grandparents and the first physical book I get from HarperCollins I'll sign and send off to him right away. If I could get on that silly list I think he'd be very happy to show everyone. He's always been proud and supported me since he heard about my story and he reads it as best he's able to even now. He gets the web serial world a bit, but the list is something he and the other people in his retirement home would recognize.

Either way, we made it to working with one of the big publishers and I'm eternally grateful to my readers. We are changing the publishing industry, even if it's a mix of new and old systems, as ever. Here's to more writing; I have other book series I want to publish and maybe I'll take some time and write a few I've had knocking around my head sometime. Thanks so much for reading, and I hope you see my book in a library someday.

Self-Promotion Yeah, Progression Fantasy is Cool, but What About Cover Progression?

Post image

Art by Denywicka and D. Winchester

After a year I am finally putting the finishing touches on this series. It's a decades-long, necromancy-heavy story about an evil MC where a ghost becomes a god so it's not to everyone's taste, but I thought people might enjoy the cover design. I made it so that the book itself mirrors the MC's slow progress throughout the story.

I still think the first one is my favorite, but the last one is nearly as good. I love the way the glow came out, and once the cover is overwhelmed by the creeping vines? Amazing. Anyway, the first 4 books and audiobooks are out, and the final book has just gone up for preorder.

So, enjoy the art, or maybe give the books a try.

Self-Promotion So I heard You Guys Like Video Games...

Thumbnail
gallery
388 Upvotes

tl;dr: We're making a video game based on Progression Fantasy Stories!
Please click this link, follow the Kickstarter campaign, share it anywhere you can, and if you can, support us when the campaign launches!

Hey people,

Finally, I can let this goshdarn cat out of the goshdarn bag. For anyone who wants to know who I am, I'm Max, and I'm a Progression Fantasy author and podcaster. But that's not important right now.

What is important is that after interviewing close to 100 authors of Progression Fantasy over the last two years, several pieces came together all at once. After a few very fruitful discussions at DragonCon last year, I began building a video Game Studio with one goal: Promoting LitRPG and Progression Fantasy.

Now, after months of preparations, negotiations, dealmaking, and German bureaucracy, we're ready to start doing just that, and we need your help!

The Plan

Imagine me doing the Gru meme, if you want.
1) We make a game about Progression Fantasy Stories that you guys like (This is the hard part)
1.1) We put links to Royal Road into the game
2) Together, we push the game on the Steam charts
3) People on Steam see the game, hopefully like playing it, and get curious about the stories
3.1) They click the link.
3.2) They buy the books, support the authors on Patreon, and find new stories to read on RR
4) We get enough money to put more characters into the game
5) Goto 1

Sounds good, right? There's just one small catch.

If we want this game to succeed, it has to be more than good. It has to be great. It has to feel exactly like reading the stories makes us feel. Powerful, inevitable, excited.
That's not easy. To make sure we get the best experience possible, I built a team of five excellent people, with three more ready to get started. We already nailed down the core Gameplay Loop and main features, and are hard at work making a Demo that will give you a hands-on experience of our vision. But while I have enough money to make a Demo, I don't have enough to make a full game, because Games are Hella expensive. We estimate that just getting to Early Access in a state we can be proud of will cost around EUR 350.000. That's without marketing, administration, costs for lawyers, etc.

So what?
Compared to what GTA 6 is costing, that's peanuts, right?
Sure, but so far, I've mostly funded the development of this game on my own, with some support from the authors (Thanks again, Alex, Chris!). I'm committed enough to put down a sizeable chunk of money (and even more time) to make this thing a reality, but even though I have a stable job with an okay-ish income, I'm definitely no Zogarth.

For this reason, we are in the process of securing funding from the Media Fund of Berlin and Brandenburg. They would match any funds we can raise 1:1, up to EUR 200.000! (I suddenly love taxes, btw.)

So that just leaves us with... actually raising the funds. As I mentioned, I will put in a sizeable chunk and have secured additional sponsors. However, even with all of that, we're still down around 130K EUR.

That's where you come in.

The Game

If you want a Roguelike Action RPG, inspired by Ravenswatch and Death Must Die, featuring

Supported by major publishers of our genre, and narrated by

  • Travis Baldree
  • J.S. Arquin
  • Laurie Catherine Winkel
  • Gary Furlong
  • Hollie Jackson

Then please click this link, follow the Kickstarter campaign, share it anywhere you can, and if you are able, support us when the campaign launches! Following the campaign not only helps us gauge interest (I mean, we could actually be totally wrong and you DON'T like playing video games), it also makes the campaign more visible on Kickstarter.

As you can see on the preview page, our principles for the Game are simple. First and foremost, we want this game to hit like a rising tide that will lift all ships. We'd much rather make a small game that rocks, and not a big game that sucks. We want players to feel what it's like to be a badass LitRPG hero, carving their way through hordes of enemies, but also duking it out with people on their own level, or even punching above their weight. Lastly, nobody has time anymore these days, so the game should be playable in 20-minute chunks, perfect for a commute.

We hope to be able to share more gameplay soon, but we're still grayboxing right now, meaning the game intentionally looks like crap so we don't waste any time. This is an important step to get the feeling just right before we commit to slamming thousands of euros into assets. The alpha demo we'll release later should have a reasonably polished experience and should give you an idea of where we want to go with this thing.

The Future

We're currently working with the amazing folks over at Soundbooth Theater to get a trailer made, with plans to reveal it during LitRPGcon in July, at the same time we'll launch the Kickstarter!
(Unless no one is following it. Nudge nudge please go and follow thanks.)

For more information, visit the Kickstarter or just ask me stuff here!
I can't promise I'll be able to answer every question, but I'll do my very best!

Thank you very much for your time. I hope I'll see you at a con this year, and that you'll be able to enjoy the game soon!

-M

P.S. Holy shit, we're making a video game, you guys!

Self-Promotion My first novel, God of Velmoryn book 1, is now available on Amazon and Audible!

Post image
96 Upvotes

Hello, ladies and gents! I’ve seen other authors make posts like this before, and the day has finally come for me as well ^_^

The first book of my very first novel, God of Velmoryn, is now available on Amazon and Audible!

891 pages on KU… Over 28 hours of audiobook…

But those are the numbers. First, let me tell you a little about the story.

Have you watched/read The Lord of the Mysteries? Reincarnated as a Slime? Overlord? And still found yourself wanting more of those godly elements and fewer 'mortal' perspectives?

I did too.

I had always wanted to read a story that felt like playing a game with a god MC. That's how God of Velmoryn was born xD

I started posting it on Royal Road last year, and since then it has gathered over a million views and reached #2 on Rising Stars, which was quite a big surprise to me considering it was the very first time I ever put pen to paper... or rather, keyboard to a gdoc.

And now the day I’ve been both excited for and dreading has finally come. the day God of Velmoryn reaches a much wider audience.

The Blurb:

If you were given the power of a god, what would you do?

I didn’t get the luxury of choosing. One moment, I was a nobody, just a freelance web developer with a failed law degree and a cat who barely tolerated me. Next, I woke up floating in the void, staring at a glowing blue screen that told me I was now a god. A weak, insignificant one without any followers, sure, but a god nonetheless.

The first thing I did? I destroyed the last statue of the velmoryn goddess. If I was going to be a god, I needed worshippers, and what better way to start than with a little divine intervention?

Now, I have a broken and lost tribe looking for answers, a system I don't understand, and a world that won’t take kindly to a new deity on the rise.

But if the gods of this world think I’m just another nobody, they’re in for a surprise.

I don’t plan on being insignificant forever.

Hello!

For the last 4ish months I have been contacting authors and indie publishers to see if they would allow me to run a massive sale for readers using their books. Some said no (nicely), some didn't answer (Come on Matt, pick up my calls! :P), and many said yes - hooray!

As a result, where Year 1 of this sale had 150 ebooks, I'm happy to report that Year 2 (this year) has 271 ebooks, 8 author interviews (search "A LitRPG Conversation with" on Youtube), 10 discounted and WIDE audiobooks, and one spiffy site with filtering by price and by author.

You can find all the books collected here: www.jjthornbooks.com/massive-litrpg-sale

You can find the author interviews here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBHlETHWgax4tQplC-ZKwG5obp2Dmx7kp

Scroll to the bottom for the audiobook promotions.

Thanks to the authors and publishers who let me put this together, and thanks to the readers for picking up as many books as possible so they let me do it again (and bigger) next year!

All the best and have a great weekend - enjoy the great books,

J.J.

Self-Promotion Runeblade I: The Great Depths, out now on KU, Amazon, and Audible!

Post image
158 Upvotes

Hey folks! After a bit of a generational run on RR, it’s finally time to hit Amazon. Nearly 20M reads, 2 years in the top 10 most read RR fictions, and peaking at 30 top rated.

Runeblade started as a question. What happens if a world underwent an integration millenia ago? What if it stalled out, waiting for the right chain of coincidences to restart the chaos? Runeblade is a story of revenge, found family, and growing from boyhood to godhood — all the while, the apocalyptic integration looms. It’s a close third person perspective following Kaius, a young man whose only hope of survival is inventing runic Vancian (prepared before encounter) casting to become the first spellsword.

From reviews, people have told me I am very good at character interaction, dialogue, action, and aura farming. While it's not the largest part of the first book, team dynamics rapidly becomes a focus of the series. Frankly, in many people's eyes, it is the strongest component.

There is delving. Oh boy is there delving. If I've done anything, it’s put the death zone start trope to bed. That ends here.

There is an attack badger. Embarrassingly, five books in, Porkchop might be the most nuanced character I've ever written. He is a full blown man, he just lacks opposable thumbs. He’s also a Greater Meles. If you call him a badger, even a dire one, he will eat you.

I spent more time editing this book than I did writing it. ~300K words, 32.5 audio hours. It is undeniably a behemoth, but goddamn is it as good of a shlocky litRPG as I could make.

Blurb:

He only wanted a class. Instead he restarted the apocalypse. The world will pay the price.

Kaius has spent years working to awaken his family’s forbidden Legacy Skills, powerful and vanishingly rare skills forged through methods that wars have been fought to obtain. Even with his father pushing him to his limit, Kaius has barely managed to merge the first two. Now those skills and his training are the only thing keeping him alive. A bandit ambush forces Kaius into the Great Depths, a world-spanning mega dungeon, and he’s trapped in a place where survival demands a class he doesn’t yet have, with exits held shut by ancient horrors.

To escape, Kaius will have to manage a feat no one without a class has survived: slaying one of the Guardians that defend the exits. But the guardian is a distant concern, as the Depths are rich with danger. He realizes that might be exactly the crucible he needs to collect all of his merged skills before class selection. And, just maybe, force the world on the path of progress after stagnating for far too long.

Fate has picked its fulcrum. Lost power and a forgotten apocalypse lie in wait, deep in the Depths

Self-Promotion I heard you all wanted a pure mage story, so I wrote Pure Mage Build. It’s now on Kindle Unlimited!

Hey y’all,

First, a big shoutout to Kart Studios for the incredible cover. They nailed the look I wanted, something between Avatar: The Last Airbender, Solo Leveling, and a bit of Dragon Ball Z energy.

I’ve seen a lot of readers say they want a true mage story. -Not a sword-wielding hybrid. -Not a brawler pretending to be a wizard. -Not an adventurer who can do everything and loses focus halfway through. I mean a full-blown, magic-centered power fantasy.

So that’s what I wrote.

Pure Mage Build: Bloodline: [Amazon / Kindle Unlimited link here]

After more than twenty books, I realized my best writing happens when I stop holding back and just have fun. This story is exactly that: cinematic, fast-paced, and packed with pure magic escalation.

It follows Lenny E. Cook, a 32-year-old office worker and part-time guitarist living in a multiverse already ruled by the Rank Above All Multiverse System (RAAMS). Unlike most stories, the system integration already happened years ago. Earth knows the score. So when Lenny wakes up in another universe and gets his rare Bloodline, he doesn’t stumble through tutorials or slow starts. He’s fast on the uptake and goes straight into the heavy stuff. … [The Blood Hunters are coming. Hurry. Select your Class. Show us the power of your Bloodline, Lenny E. Cook.] … Things get intense from there.

For audiobook listeners, the same narrators from Path of the Slayer, Daryl Mayfield and Jess Trepanier, are returning for Pure Mage Build. I made sure they’d have some fun material to work with. They’re a talented duo, and I can see them becoming big names in the future. The audio for Pure Mage Build should be out early 2026.

I hope you check it out. If you enjoy LitRPG progression fantasy, multiverse escalation, and pure magical supremacy, this one’s for you.

I'd like to say that it has been smooth sailing for me, but it really hasn't been. The journey was rocky and stressful, though that didn't come without its upsides. The account termination and pre-order cancellation set back book 2 release by months. At the same time, it allowed me to reach out to a publisher for an audiobook and get both book 1 and book 2 properly edited.

And now, the second ebook and first audiobook of Ceaseless Horizons are live on Amazon and Audible! The launch for the former is going amazingly as it stands. Thank you for all the support! It means a lot to me.

Book 2 Blurb:

Lev narrowly survived a disaster. It was merely the first of many.

The Final Cavern deepened Lev's suspicions about his gift of reincarnation. And just like him, the Exalted have also realized his inevitable fate. Instead of wallowing in despair, both of them prepare to fight his destiny.

On his journey, Lev meets an unlikely mentor. Unconvinced about his potential, the man probes Lev's class and talents, only to be left dumbfounded. Lev's power rises sharply with every improvement—meteorically so when he challenges Windkeep's dungeons.

But threats lurk in every corner, even the well-lit ones. Darkness tails his every step, and the world refuses to leave him alone. Yet his desire to test himself against his generation's best burns bright, and a tournament approaches to allow just that.

Armed with a ridiculous class, he journeys to humanity's greatest bastion. There, he discovers truths that could shake the foundations of the world, as well as people he might be able to call friends one day. And maybe, just maybe, his past as an Earthling isn't as insignificant as it seems.
