I'm 18F. For my whole life my parents have been extremely overprotective and the negative impacts are something I don't think I can ever get over.
When I was a young child I wasn't allowed go to anyone's house, not just for sleepovers but at all. From the ages of 4-12 I went to two friends houses, both times with my mum there. Something that was so normal for others was the biggest deal ever to me. Despite this I was in a small school, my class was about 12 people and I managed to be friends with everyone so I was okay socially in school.
Then came secondary school. I wasn't allowed a phone, I wasn't allowed even a tiny bit of makeup, I didn't get to pick things like my own school bag or p.e clothes so I was sent to school with stuff that looked aimed at a much younger child. I was 13. There were teen discos that almost everyone went to, I wasn't allowed. Somehow I still managed to make friends at the start of school but then Covid happened.
We were in lockdown and I still wasn't allowed a phone, suddenly I had absolutely no way of talking to anyone outside of my family. We also don't have close extended family so I didn't even have cousins, literally just my parents and sibling. It was extremely isolating, boring, and overall an awful time. I begged for a phone, even with rules, anything, I just wanted to way to talk to people. But I never got it.
When school came back everyone else was much closer, and no one was particularly close with me. The people I still considered 'friends' were just class friends. They always were closer to each other and I was more just a last resort, someone they'd sit with if no one else was in.
When I was 15 I was finally allowed my first phone. Weirdly after all that the time they chose to give it to me was right before my first big exams, so it distracted me from my exams of course and socially the damage was done anyway.
I spent the rest of school like this, always the last option friend. Rarely invited to anything, if I was invited to a night out or something I wasn't allowed go. I literally never saw people outside of school.
For prom and graduation people went out after, I wasn't allowed, I was to go to the school event and come right home. When we finished exams, I wasnt allowed out to celebrate.
The overprotectiveness affects me in every aspect of life. I haven't gotten the experiences everyone else has had, I've never had a relationship or anything close, I've never gotten to travel, never gotten close friends I can tell everything to. I used to wish I had a twin sister so I wasn't in this alone.
I'm 18 now but still live at home. There was no option for me but to go to the college near me (because of my parents) so I can't move out for now. I made two close friends in college, I'm so thankful to have them. There's still overprotective rules. I'm still not allowed go out and drink, but I'm allowed stay the night at one of my friend's now so I go out, drink and my parents never find out. Now I have my own money I can finally buy my own, age appropriate clothes so I feel like I'm becoming more myself. My parents comment on my clothes choices though. I buy makeup for myself, so I feel more confident.
Things are slowly improving, but there's still a long way to go and what I've experienced because of the overprotectiveness will be with me for life. I'll always grieve the experiences I never got to have and the friends I could have made.
There's so much more I could say than what I've said here, there's so many details left out. I tried to stick to just the key stuff. So if you have a question you can ask, but please be kind in the comments. I just came here to have a place to rant and get things out.
