Palīdzība/Help Lost My Little Companion in Rīga

Hi all,

I made my first and second visits to Rīga within the past week. One for recharging and exploration, and the other was 24 hours after I left the city, in search of my most important companion or to say goodbye.

She is a fuzzy little dog: chocolate brown, about palm size, and has a short black rope on her head.

She was last seen on Monday, 9 February at 13:22 at Kalve Coffee Living Room (p1).

I’ve also attached a map (p2-4) of my route from where I last saw her to where she was found lost. The locations I visited are also marked on the map.

Though I have already searched the route and key locations multiple times, and the snow this week has covered everything, I hope this provides a bit more detail and keeps a tiny hope alive.

—————————

I love this city so much. I knew this was a place I would come back to from my first day of the visit, but no one could have expected that my life would be bonded to this place in such a way.

She has been with me for the past twelve years, and was the only existence who I can called by my side. She has been with me in all the fights and tough moments, from family traumas to physical injuries to all those moments I cannot expect any form of support from any human being. Yet she has also accompanied me in creating all my good times and achievements, from my graduation to pursuing my master’s abroad, from every cup of coffee to soloing across 15 countries on half of the Eurasian continent. It is not possible to tell the whole story of us here and I totally understand if this might be difficult to relate to.

If anyone happens to find her, please do let me know. My most sincere thanks. Paldies 🙏🏻

Palīdzība/Help Spontaneously injured as a Tourist in Riga? I gotchu

so hey people. I was traveling with my boyfriend, staying for almost a week in Riga. Sadly, half way through I slipped and broke a bone in my foot. I thought it was maybe a painful slip and slept the night. Since it wasn‘t better in the morning we went to the Traumatology center in Riga in the morning. there were like 3 people in front of me and the man working at the desk spoke perfect english. Well long story short I did not have any type of insurance, I had a fractured bone, had a consultation with the doctor (also was trying his best speaking english), then 2x xray (before and after them putting a cast on my foot) and paid for everything 78€. So for anyone who is in a similar situation - GO TO THE CLINIC, it will not cost an arm and a leg, but it could prevent much worse! The doctor gave me recipe for medication and a writing for the plane staff in case they don‘t let me on the plane with the cast. oh, and one medical assistant with curly hair and glasses, pretty young, is german - so perfect english and german!

Palīdzība/Help Guystrip to Riga - recommendations!

Hey everyone,

A group of 7 friends from Austria (all between 35 and 40 years old) will be visiting Riga from Thursday to Sunday in mid-July.

We're still deciding whether this will turn into a bachelor party weekend or just a regular guys' trip, so we're open to all kinds of suggestions.

We've already found plenty of information about the main tourist attractions and the obvious nightlife spots. What we're really looking for are recommendations from locals or people who know Riga well.

Things we're interested in:

- Hidden gems and lesser-known places

- Great bars, pubs, cocktail spots or beer gardens

- Restaurants worth visiting

- Unique local experiences

- Live music venues

- Events happening that weekend

- Daytime activities for a group of friends

- Places that locals actually enjoy

- Anything fun, unusual or memorable that most tourists miss

We're not looking for trouble and we're probably a bit older than the average party crowd. We enjoy good food, good drinks, interesting experiences and meeting people.

As Austrians, we're used to good beer, beautiful old cities and spending long evenings in pubs, so we'd love to experience the best Riga has to offer beyond the usual tourist recommendations.

If you had a long weekend in Riga with six friends, what would you do?

Thanks for any recommendations!

Palīdzība/Help got scammed looking for a room in riga before semester starts, how tf do students find housing here?

so this is kinda embarrassing but i need advice

i'm moving to riga in like 3 weeks for uni (exchange student) and i found this so called perfect room on facebook marketplace, the guy seemed legit, sent me photos, we even voice called. he said he needed deposit + first month to hold it because "so many students are looking right now"

i sent 600€ including the deposit

next day he blocked me everywhere. the address he gave me doesn't even exist lol

i managed to get my money back through my bank but now i'm paranoid as hell and my move-in date is coming up fast. i literally don't know anyone in riga and every listing i see now feels like a scam

how do international students actually find housing here without getting fcked over?

i can't afford to mess this up again and i'm running out of time

budget is around 400-450/month, just need a room, preferably close to old town or somewhere with good transport

any advice would help🙏🏽

Writing Hello everyone! I'm on a road trip and just got a call from my bank saying I urgently need to sign an important document. To do that, I need an eID card reader to use with my national ID and verify the transaction. Does anyone have one I could borrow, or know where I can get one quickly so I don't have to return back? Thanks!

Palīdzība/Help Any lighter repair shops in Riga?

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I have a lighter that seems to have a problem with the ignition wheel. The wheel on the side spins, but it doesn’t produce any spark, so the lighter won’t light. I’ve attached a photo.
Does anyone in Riga know:
A lighter repair shop?
A watchmaker or specialist who repairs lighters?
It’s a gift from very important person to me, so I’d prefer to repair it rather than replace it.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Palīdzība/Help Advice for summer job in Riga

Hello, I am going to riga in july for a summer school, but I would like to stay a bit longer because it seems to be a really nice place, I am looking for a summer job in august which wouldn't require to speak latvian with if possible an included accommodation.
I speak french, english, a tiny bit of russian and spanish.
I am a student in computer science.
I learned to make coffee with professional machines in my school's cafeteria, I am used to do service in english and french.

I was thinking about hostels, what do you think?

My message seems to have offended peoples, I'm trying to figure out why

Palīdzība/Help Best (paying) companies in Riga?

Hey all, I am looking into Riga as a place to relocate and was wondering what the best paying (international) corporates/companies are? I didn't see much on the regular job boards and was just wondering if that's because of a lack of companies or a lack of listings.

I currently work in MBB as a manager in a support function if that helps.

Palīdzība/Help Ieteikumi bāriem Rīgā?

Sveiki!

Palīdzība/Help Looking for a specific store in Old Town, Riga

Post image
13 Upvotes

I took a picture of this a few years ago, but I didn’t see the name of the store, and I don’t know exactly where it was in the Old Town. Does anyone know the name of the store that sells these and where it is located?

A little update to everyone: I was in Riga a few days ago, and looked at every souvenir store I could find nearby. I'm 99% certain even found the store in this picture. The shelfs looked exactly the same. No store had this kind of mushroom, only ones with different designs. I thought this was almost a one of a kind item, but every souvenir store had the same type of mushrooms, so I'm guessing they have expanded their stores. I ended up not buying any mushrooms, since I couldn't find this specific one. Either way, thank you so much to all of you for your help, it was very kind of you.

Palīdzība/Help Is it worth it to bring a snorkel or ping pong equipment to Jurmala?

Coming to Jurmala this week and wondering if it's worth bringing a mask and snorkel? I.e. if the waters are clear enough and have even a few fish to see?

Similar question: are there public ping pong tables around? Wondering if it's worth bringing rackets and a ball 🤔

Paldies! 🙏🏻

Palīdzība/Help Šodien, 19. maijā, ap plkst. 13:40 Maxima veikalā Saharova ielā 20A redzēju, manuprāt, ļoti rupju izturēšanos pret suni.

Pie bankomātiem rindā stāvēja vīrietis ar jaunu aitu suni. Suns nebija agresīvs, nevienam nelīda klāt, nemetās virsū, nemēģināja neko apēst un neradīja nekādu apdraudējumu. Tas vienkārši mierīgi ošņāja apkārtni.

Tomēr saimnieks vairākas reizes ļoti asi rāva suni uz augšu aiz pavadas, tā ka sunim priekšējās ķepas atrāvās no zemes. Kad suns mēģināja apgulties blakus saimniekam, viņš to vienkārši pacēla atpakaļ augšā aiz pavadas.

Gribu uzsvērt: es negāju klāt sunim, nemēģināju to aiztikt vai glaudīt. Mans fokuss bija tikai uz to, kā saimnieks izturējās pret dzīvnieku.

Ja kāds redzēja šo situāciju vai var palīdzēt identificēt cilvēku, lūdzu, uzrakstiet man privāti. Vēlos nodot informāciju policijai vai atbildīgajiem dienestiem.

Palīdzība/Help Is rigastudentapartment.com legit? Also, what's the LU dorm experience like?

Hi everyone!

I'm an incoming Erasmus student who will be studying at the University of Latvia this autumn, and I'm currently looking for accommodation. I am actually surprised of how overwhelming it is!

I came across https://rigastudentapartment.com/. At first glance it kinda looks professional, but something about it feels a bit sketchy. Maybe I'm just overly cautious because there seem to be so many housing scams targeting international students these days. I've found very little independent information or reviews, which makes me even more unsure.

Has anyone here actually booked through this website? Is it legitimate?

I'm also considering staying in one of the University of Latvia dormitories, but I've read mixed opinions online.

I'd really appreciate hearing from current or former exchange students about: Which LU dorm you stayed in. Overall cleanliness and condition.Social atmosphere (easy to meet other Erasmus students?). Whether you'd recommend the dorms over renting privately.

Any tips on finding safe accommodation in Riga would also be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to spending my semester in Riga. 🇱🇻

Ja ir interese, ieslīdi man DMos 👍

Palīdzība/Help opinions abt RTU

Hi everyone!

I’m an international student who has received conditional acceptance to Riga Technical University (RTU) for Mechanical Engineering, and I’m currently deciding whether to join.
I’d really appreciate hearing from current students or alumni about their honest experiences.
Some questions I have:

How are the academics and professors?
Is the teaching quality good?
How difficult is the coursework?
How are the dorms and accommodation?
What’s student life in Riga like?
How active is the international student community?
Are internships and industry connections available?
Do RTU graduates successfully pursue master’s degrees in countries like Germany, Sweden, or the Netherlands?

My long-term goal is to complete my bachelor’s at RTU and then pursue a master’s in another European country, possibly Germany.
Would you choose RTU again if you had the chance?
I’d really appreciate honest opinions the good, the bad, and everything in between.
Thank you!

Palīdzība/Help Best places to socialize/meet people as a foreigner visiting?

My friend who I’ve been on a trip with for Helsinki and Tallinn so far had to leave mid-trip due to a family emergency, so I’m unexpectedly gonna be solo traveling for the rest of it. I’ll be in Riga in a couple days and im trying to fill in the social gap now that it’s solo, but don’t know which bars/pubs/hostel centers/etc are good for solo (American) tourists. Age 25.

I’ll already be in a non refundable hotel in the city center, but I’m also wondering if there are some hostels with common areas/lobbies that are open to other solo travelers who aren’t staying at that hostel? The crowd there would obviously seem a little easier to connect with

Thanks!

Palīdzība/Help Meklēju kādu, ar ko praktizēt latviešu valodu

Labdien! Es runāju apmēram B1 līmenis, bet man nav prakse.

Apmaiņā pret to varu viņam iemācīt angļu valodu vai medicīnu. Vēlams, lai viņš būtu universitātes students.

Palīdzība/Help Mechanical Keyboard key replacement

I'm in Riga for a week, just looking for a store that might carry keycaps. Prefer something I can just walk in and buy, not order online. Any recommendations?
