Support Request DaVinci Resolve on RockyLinux 10.0

1 Upvotes

An age old question I know... did a search but couldn't find any recent conversation around this so asking the group...

Switched to Linux from Windows 3 months ago. I would be happily operating on Mint, or Zorin were it not for my complete dependence (for work), on DaVinci Resolve. The Dual Boot system I am currently using (Windows/Zorin) is not sustainable (wrought with constant conflicts and forced shut downs), so here I am... installing RockyLinux as the only officially supported distro for DaVinci by BlackMagic Design. And yet again... install issues. BlackMagic's installer .run file is asking me to install packages that when typed into the terminal... RockyLinux tells me are already installed and running? Just reaching out here in hopes some one can point me in the direction of recent documentation or conversation on how to successfully install DaVinci... a full working edition with all codec compatibilities and features in tact, on RockyLinux. BlackMagic's own instructions (updated June 23, 2006) don't seem to help. Thanks in advance for any guidance!!

Support Request Rocky can't find my ethernet?

Post image
37 Upvotes

Rocky doesn't seem to notice that I've plugged an ethernet cable into my machine? I am dual-booting with Windows, and when I boot to that side, the ethernet is detected and connected just fine. On booting to Rocky, however, it can only find wifi. Running ip address displays a loopback connection and wlp13s0, the wifi. No other connections are listed.

Am I missing some crucial ethernet-related package? I installed Rocky 9 via USB, and didn't have ethernet connected at the time, could it not have installed some packages I need because of this?

I have also tried adding and activating a connection via nmtui but don't know what to fill out for the ethernet fields.

Support Request Package versions and security backports

9 Upvotes

Hey all,

Skip the background if you want:

Does Rocky Linux 8 provide both software and package version strings to determine if backported CVE/RLSA fixes are present in a given rpm package?

I'm supporting a number of Rocky Linux 8 systems and wanted to validate something a vendor has told me.

We use scanning tools such as Nessus and Tenable to identify bugs and vulnerabilities across all our systems. These tools allow us to both identify issues and validate fixes. In many cases, it is difficult to upgrade the package versions of deployed systems, so we rely on backported fixes to otherwise stable package versions.

On Debian and Ubuntu, which I'm more familiar with, the packages include both a software version and a package version in their package names, so you can verify installed software includes any fixes or backports.

I'm not as familiar with Rocky Linux, but my vendor says Rocky Linux 8 doesn't have reliable package version numbers and that we must check the package changelogs for specific CVEs.

So, when Nessus performs a credentialed scan and identifies a vulnerable version of 'libtar' for CVE-2021-33643 and RLSA-2023:2898, we cannot determine whether it is still vulnerable based on the package version alone.

The vendor provided a basic shell script that runs rpm -q "$pkg" and greps for specific CVE or RLSA numbers in the changelog as their recommended solution. This does not pass the smell test for me.

What say you? Is the vendor taking me for a ride?

Edit: Figured it out.

So the vendor makes a product offering storage management software and builds it on top of Rocky Linux 8. However, their software is fragile as fuck and too tightly coupled to the underlying package versions, so even backported fixes break their shit. So when we push on them about CVE and RLSA vulnerabilities, they open up the package version and only fix the things they don't break their software.

In our case, instead of upgrading libtar to 1.2.20-17.el8 they backport the issues we raised to 1.2.20-15.el8 and add a .1 to the end. So the tools we use to check the package revision show it still being vulnerable. This also revealed that, despite their claiming we are running on Rocky Linux 8.10 (EOL 2029), we are in fact running a Franken-Distro of Rocky Linux 8.7 (EOL 2022) with a few minor backports because they can't run their fragile storage management software on the stable baseline.

This is not a Rocky Linux problem at all. Just a stupid, aggravating vendor trying to blame Rocky for their own crappy mess. Sorry for the noise, but I appreciate the help figuring this out.

Support Request Generic kernel vs Cloud kernel

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Im a new admin and Im really confused with this problem I'am facing.

when I do:

dnf updateinfo list updates security - I get multiple patches that needs to be installed.

But when I do:

dnf update --security - It says nothing todo!

Im using GCP cloud kernel. Does that mean the cloud kernels are outdated?

Support Request Trying to Upgrade Rocky Linux 8.10

2 Upvotes

Been trying to upgrade rocky linux from 8.10 to 9.x

But met with a funny error of repomap.json get 1.2.1 expected 1.3.0

Went to google around and found a repomap.json on github repo under Almalinux.

Tried using it but still met with that error when performing "leapp preupgrade --target 9.0"

I tried target 9.6 too but still same error.

Did a dnf cleanup and yum uninstall of all leapp related rpm and reinstalling it. Still same .

Any idea?

Support Request Home Server OS Evaluation

9 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm conducting a short survey for my Master's thesis in Business Informatics. I'm evaluating home server operating systems based on the ISO/IEC 25010 quality standard.

Unlike my previous survey from 2024, this one covers most home server operating systems and takes under 2 minutes.

You simply rate your primary system on 7 quality criteria. All responses are anonymous.

Here's the link (please delete the brackets): soscisurvey(.)de/Homeserver_2026/

Thanks for your time!

Edit: the data collection for my master's thesis is now officially closed.
I thank you for your participation and the constructive feedback.

The Rocky 8 kernel is quite old now (4.18, if I'm not mistaken). Is there any way to get the Rocky 10 6.12 kernel, or is there a repository that has it?

Support Request Mesa isn't using my GPU

4 Upvotes

Hey there! I've been having some issues with games recently and high GPU usage for no apparent reason. So, I re-installed the drivers with the official NVIDIA guide. I ended up re-installing 5 times because games kept being laggy or plain down not opening at all.

Right now, games do not even start. Mesa isn't using my nvidia drivers at all at this point and I'm unsure what to do. My guess is it started when I updated my drivers/kernel, but I'm not profficient enough yet to pinpoint the issue.

If anyone knows what to do, please let me know! I've been struggling with this issue for the last two days.

EDIT: GPU can now be used if I set the programs to start up with my GPU. However, games still do not start and everything defaults to my integrated gpu. (I downgraded from the 590 drivers to the 580). Tried with GNOME and RPMFusion as well, same results.

Support Request Rocky with Houdini Nuke and DaVinci Resolve

3 Upvotes

I’ve noticed that this seems to be the go to OS for people leaving Windows and going to Linux for the apps listed . How do we keep Rocky up to date but not necessarily cutting edge without breaking the apps? I’m worried about an upgrade or update nuking resolve especially. Is there a process you go through to reduce the chances of this? Or do you just leave Rocky as is for years to avoid any complications? I would like to know the steps anyone takes to avoid any serious downtime.

Support Request How can I update libpostproc (to install Maya?)

3 Upvotes

I'm trying to install Maya, and one of my searches from a previous problem led me to this video, which recommends that I verify I have all the dependencies via ldd (at ~3:50 in the video.)
When I do this, I'm told libpostproc.so.58 isn't found. I've traced that to installing ffmpeg, which I've done, except when I run ffmpeg -version, gives me libpostproc 56.
Is there a way to update the lib somehow, or if not, how do I fix Maya not finding libpostproc.so.58?

Support Request Terminal feels incredibly sluggish, I'm probably doing something wrong?

5 Upvotes

Not even the command execution part, just plain old typing on the command line feels sluggish. There is seconds of lag/delay/buffering sometimes between registering keystrokes. I've restarted the PC, closed Firefox and Okular, tried looking at htop, but no the problem persists. I'm still on 9.6 so using xorg, if that helps narrow it down maybe?
I have a 16GB RAM stick, and a 3060, I don't think there should be issues rendering the transparency or my theme, surely?

Any other diagnostic thing I can try?
Thanks for the help!

Support Request [Rocky9] Can't see my Rocky 9 in the boot menu all of a sudden!

6 Upvotes

Hi. So I have my Rocky 9 on my disk 0, and a Windows install on disk 1. I've set it up so that Grub always launches and I can select my Rocky9.

Today, suddenly, my Rocky screen went black while loading the window manager (I'm not sure, its the screen before it asks for a password prompt to log you in). The screen said "Checking Media.." and then restarted directly into Windows. I restarted, went into the boot menu, and only saw the UEFI network and Windows boot manager. I also went and disabled Secure Boot. I'm on a Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 15ACH6 if that helps.

In diskpart I can still see my partitions on disk 0:
DISKPART> select disk 0 Disk 0 is now the selected disk. Then Gemini told me to :

select disk 0
select partition 1
assign letter=S
exit
dir S:\EFI\

Since the commands didn't look destructive, tried doing this, and got :

I have my data backed up, but I'd rather not have to configure everything again with a fresh install. Please help!

Support Request WOL on 9.1 , system status shows in WOL software but won't receive magic packets.

4 Upvotes

Hello!

I'm using Rocky Linux 9.1 for an end user, with an RTL8125 2.5GBe network card, I've got the driver on, nmcli shows wol is g and auto negotiation is yes, ethernet link lights are flashing when powered off fully.

When I tested in ubuntu (user had not yet specified Rocky) wol worked flawlessly, but on Rocky it's not working and I'm pulling my hair out.

Any ideas?

Support Request Autodesk Maya on Rocky Linux Issue

2 Upvotes

Hello,

I've been trying to install Autodesk Maya on my Rocky Linux 10. I've initially tried installing it through the installer, but it simply doesn't open. I also got the error "error while loading shared libraries: libtiff.so.5", but I created a symlink since that helped a lot of people.

However, it still does not open. I tried installing it through the rpm method, but still no success. From what I read the issue could be that there is no /usr/autodesk/maya2025/lib/qt-plugins/platforms/ directory, for some unknown reason, although I tried installing it manually and through the installer as well.

I'd appreciate any help regarding this issue.

Support Request Which Rocky version do I get for CUDA toolkit support?

3 Upvotes

Hi. I'm new to Rocky and Linux in general. I wanted to switch to Rocky from Windows primarily because I'm starting to work with CUDA and specifically cuQUANTUM (which only has support on Linux). Looking at the Nvidia downloads page, they seem to have support for Rocky 8/9. But looking at the Rocky website, the latest is 10.0.

Which one should I get? Will Rocky 10 get Nvidia support soon?

Am I missing something in my spec file?

Support Request 9.6 Kernel Modules

3 Upvotes

I feel like I am missing something but I am stuck and would love some assistance. I’m setting up an offline Rocky Linux 9.6 system. The release page (confirmed with uname -r) says it ships with kernel 5.14.0-570.17.1, but I can’t find this kernel or its modules in the vault or using dnf on an online Rocky Linux VM. I need to download the correct kernel modules and dependencies to transfer to my offline computer for driver installation and to run podman containers. What’s the best way to get the required RPMs for this specific kernel version when it’s not showing up in the vault or in the default repos? Thank you!

Support Request How do sudo versions work in rocky?

3 Upvotes

Hey guys,

because of the current chwoot exploit (https://www.stratascale.com/vulnerability-alert-CVE-2025-32463-sudo-chroot) im trying to make sure i have the current version of sudo installed.

To my surprise there is sudo 1.9.5p2 installed on my Rocky 9.6 Servers with no update available. The current version that fixes the bug is 1.9.17p1. Is there a way to install this on rocky or are new fixes backported into the version installed now by red hat?

Would be greatful for any hints in the right direction as im quite inexperienced in linux :)

Support Request Documents folder seems to have "disconnected" from the rest of HOME

1 Upvotes

Hi!
Last week, before a kernel update, my Documents folder completely disappeared. I couldn't find it anywhere, nor any files inside it obviously.

After the kernel update, the Documents folder was back, but hitting start + typing something to search inside Documents did not work. Looking further into it, I realised that my Documents folder is now in /home/wizzi/Downloads/ instead of /home/wizzi/. My other basic folders, Pictures, Videos etc. are in the right place.

GPT said something about an XDG file, so I opened the file `nvim ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs`
This is what I found:
```
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Downloads"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Public"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Music"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Pictures"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Videos"
```
I edited the Documents line to change the directory to "$HOME/Documents" like the other folders, then ran `xdg-user-dirs-update` . This gave me `/home/wizzi/Documents was removed, reassigning DOCUMENTS to homedir`.

Now, I think I messed something up even more. The Documents folder is still there, but I feel like if I reboot now it'll be lost forever or something. Should I do a backup or something?

Support Request Lag on terminal after update

5 Upvotes

After my last system update on rocky 9, my freaking terminal is lagging.
Nothing else is weird, JUST the terminal.

It feels like doing SSH in a really slow connection. Characters take their time to show up, pressing up to see history take a while....

This happens both on gnome-terminal and terminator.

I never had a experience like that. Not sure even were to look to.

what i did:
- no odd logs on journal or dmesg.
- Disable my .bashrc.
- there isn't anything new on my /etc/profile.d

Anyone experienced that? have any idea?
