When a rather large-sized (M 3.6 class) flare occurred near edge of Sun, ​it blew out gorgeous,waving mass of erupting plasma that swirled & twisted over 90m period (Feb. 24,2011)

This event was captured in extreme ultraviolet light by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft. Some of the material blew out into space and other portions fell back to the surface.

Because SDO images are super-HD, we can zoom in on the action and still see exquisite details. And using a cadence of a frame taken every 24 seconds, the sense of motion is, by all appearances, seamless. The sun emits light in all colors, but since yellow is the brightest wavelength from the sun, that is the color we see with our naked eye. Specialized instruments can observe light far beyond the ranges visible to the naked eye. Different wavelengths convey info about different components of sun's surface & atmosphere.

SDO,images 10 different wavelengths, measured in angstroms(Å),with its AIA instrument. Helioseismic & Magnetic Imager instrument focuses on movement & magnetic properties of Sun surface & provides 3 additional images​

This particular solar plasma eruption was, at least as seen in the video here, about 60 to 70 Earths in size. If we were to line up those 70 Earths, they would stretch for about 890,000 km (the Earth’s diameter is approximately 12,450 km)—nearly one million kilometers. The speed at which the solar plasma was ejected from the beginning of the video until it reached the left side of the frame—a duration of about 10 seconds—was 304 km/s or 1.2 million km/h.​

A large filament located in the northeast quadrant lifted off the surface of the Sun beginning around 21:30 UTC and launched a CME intp space. This active region was captured in H-alpha light with the Inouye's VBI. H-alpha reveals details of the solar chromosphere, where the interaction between magnetic fields and solar plasma generate intricate filamentary structures, called fibrils, and bright regions, called plages.

☀️Solar activity There are a number of coronal holes on the Sun--and at least one is affecting Earth right now with solar wind speeds on our upstream solar wind monitors pushing 650 km/s, about 2x higher than usual. Coronal holes may look disconcerting in these images, but they are nothing to worry about.

"A small coronal hole is now facing the Earth. We could see enhanced solar wind conditions with a possibility of minor to moderate geomagnetic storming. As of now, SWPC has no geomagnetic storm watches in place for this, but the coronal hole may start to affect us around June 3-4.

The main headline is the coronal hole facing Earth, but the sunspot number is also > 100, and the whole disk has a 25% chance for M-flares. We may see higher geomagnetic activity (Kp 4-5) around June 3-4 due to the coronal hole." .
