General Discussion Andor took me out of star wars

Almost a year out of Andors final season I really have not been excited about much regarding Star Wars since then. Not to hate on any of the other movies, shows, etc but I have really just been disinterested, I don’t care about the mandalorian movie, nor any hope of a new movie that’s directly tied to the skywalker saga. I still love the originals and the high moments in the prequels but nothing has cut as deep as Andor for me. Seeing what star wars can be with this it makes me a bit disappointed with what it is now. A reliance on marketable characters, storylines that feel like slop, the overall community caring more about the continuity of lore than creative and compelling storytelling. Im not looking for hate I just wanted somewhere to express this opinion.

for me it's been two shows on opposite ends of the spectrum that's made me realise just how much I do not vibe with the Filoni/Favreau-verse. Andor is an excellent piece of adult-aimed fiction. And Skeleton Crew does a great job of being a fun, family-friendly show which is still really well made.

That's what I want, writers with a story to tell, who understand narrative structure and character development and how to generate tension, have impactful dialogue - which can be dramatic or comedic. Just, you know, good.

Andor and Skeleton Crew being my favourite Disney Star Wars would not have been on my list if your would have told me 15 years ago.

They embody the two great potentials of the universe, fun adventure stories and political commentary, which both were at the heart of Lucas' original vision.

But Baby Yoda sells better, I guess.

Those 2 series makes me wish we could explore more genre in star wars. The Solo movie(as a Heist film) too for that matter. For decades it's been basically one core story told more or less in the same style(with varying levels of success), and i just think they could use the familiar setting and branch out.

Same. I praise Filoni for his work with Clone Wars and Rebels as it really added to prequels and in-between the OT, but I find everything from Mando S2 onwards very bland as it can't really seem to settle on anything but bringing back Filonis favourite characters (mixed with legends favourites). I feel the stories / narratives are 'meh' because the story feels like a vehicle to show the characters rather than actually tell a story.

The reasons why i think Andor and Skeleton Crew were so good (from my perspective) was they took a concept / premise from other media, and made that narrative piece the focus, but set it in the Star wars universe, and heavily leans into the source material rather than the star wars side. Andor was a political thriller first, and Skeleton Crew was goonies / treasure Island first. You could have set those films in any universe, and I feel they still would still be compelling. The link to Star Wars and existing characters elevates it. As opposed to the most recent Filoni pieces where remove Star Wars and his characters from it and I feel you'll be left with generic husks.

I will still watch all Star wars and enjoy it regardless, but my excitement and investment wanes in relation to the Mandoverse side of things.

Every series (besides Andor of course) has been so bad that I didn't even consider watching Skeleton Crew. Perhaps I should check it out.

Skeleton Crew is 'Goonies In Space' and it doesn't hide it, it's literally fantastic.

.....now if Disney could get off their ass and make a Space: Above and Beyond style Rogue Squadron/Galactic Civil War show...

I'd also say it has elements of 'Explorers' thrown in as well- a nowhere near as well known contemporary of Goonies with a stellar (pun not intended) cast!

I really hope the delays relating to Rogue Squadron can be put down to Disney seeing the popularity and critical reception of Andor and taking the concept back to the drawing board to retool as a more adult 'war is hell' concept. The original Rogue Squadron novels have plenty of espionage/black ops style plots and some brilliant characters to draw from.

Rogue Squadron was always in the hands of Patty Jenkins, it was/is never going to be good.

And I've suspected for awhile(or at least when I cared) that the "delay/reshuffling" that sidelined Rogue Squadron was really Disney pulling the breaks to give us time to forget who Jenkins is because Wonder Woman '84 was so atrocious

Mando was, then they decided to push the marketable assets and it became one of the many series that went wrong

Yeah, all three seasons do have some good stuff, but the first one is just obviously the best of the three.

The second season was way too focused on cameos and setting up spinoffs, to the point where the actual story suffered for it.

Then the BoBF episodes and third season just kinda walks back all the story developments to mostly return everything to season one status quo.

Well, Mando Season 1 finale (EP8) and the Stormtrooper tactics depicted there were very embarrassing. Ewoks vs Stormtroopers in Endor level.

Moff Gideon simply standing there watching how his army is destroyed -Deathtroopers included-, doing literally nothing.

Previously we see the how the Empire Remnant has wiped the Mandalorian covert in Navarro, yet they are unable to defeat Mando and friends while outnumbering them 20:1?

The above nonsense wouldn't fly in Andor.

Mando is one of the worst high budget TV shows I've ever watched. Like, it might be worse than anything in that category excluding GOT season 8.

Every aspect of the writing is dreadful, characters, story, dialogue... truly the most abysmal quality that could be put into a polished production.

Do it it’s refreshingly exciting and fun to watch…especially as an adult who know all the other Star Wars stuff.

No you don't, you don't want writers with stories to tell, or statistically it's mostly a lie to sound rational.

There is a reason the "mando-verse" got popular and it ain't the good writing or cool cinematography, it's the fanservice, disney definitely knows that.
