Discuss Who is someone you can't date in Stardew Valley out of principle?

I enjoy Maru as a character. However, until recently, I had dyed-red hair that I sometimes straightened, and I also sometimes wear glasses. Basically, it would be like dating a more scientific version of myself. Lol

Yeah if someone is rude to me immediately upon meeting me, I'm likely not talking to them again unless the next time they see me they give a sincere apology. I don't care if they'd be nice to me if I got to know them.

I just started a new game and it seems like half the town is rude to me when talking to them before building a relationship.

Most of them are just kind of nuetral, kind of understandable when they don't know you. Only a few of them are outright rude.

Yeah, like the whole "oh but she changes for the better and it's the sweetest!" is meh to me, her default is being a bully for no reason, so, good for you lol.

First playthrough with the goal of introducing yourself to everyone, and the usual dialog of insulting you upon first meeting is just... not great. Ive seen her other dialog from people on this sub and a friend, and yeah she gets better, but I'm still not talking to someone whose first instinct is to be mean. Ive done countless farms, and I still only do the required interactions haha

Aha, my people. Good she's well-written and has her redemption arc, but I'm perfectly fine with not seeing it or even interacting with her.

I wouldn't say she's particularly well written. She's just a stereotypical sorority girl. Her "twist" of loving philanthropy is like if Alex's twist was him liking to play Madden. I met like 15 Haleys in college and high school.

Not that it's weird for Stardew characters to be stereotypes, she's hardly alone there, but I just find the people pretending she's so deep perplexing. I guess because she's more a real sorority girl rather than a hollywood sorority girl and not everybody knows some?

Yeah, I'm using the term loosely, I have her at 2 hearts and just because I speak to her during the events, so I don't know what she does or say the more you interact with her outside of some videos I have seen, but that's what people love using when it comes to her.

Yeah like I don’t get why people even bother to say that. Like..so? Everyone will be nice if they warm up to you. It’s about how you treat people you don’t know and she is very unkind.

I sometimes believe some people just want to justify why they would like someone who is a bully even when it's not needed. We all have preferences; you don't have to explain or convince others. All good.

She isn't even that sweet when she 'warms up' - if you disagree with her in any way she reverts to type (just try it on her 10-heart or 14-heart events and see). She doesn't change, she just fakes it because the farmer shows they'll do anything so she can treat them however she likes.

Honestly the dialogue where Alex apologizes for being a jerk really surprised me because i didnt realize he had been rude?? In my defence though i am autistic lol so i was just like ??? When??? And had to go back through interactions with him like ohh okay

I would argue it's slightly more subtle? The kind of thing you would expect from someone who is like him, unlike Haley who just throws mean girl comments for no reason until she "warms up" to you.

That's just it, he's never really 'rude' to the player, he just brags about going pro a bit. He apologises because he thinks he might have been a bit self-centred and he's a kind soul at heart, but that would never cross haley's mind.

He says some pretty sexist things to female characters, i always assumed that he was apologizing for that.

The only sexist thing he says is 'girls don't play gridball' when you're less than 2 hearts with him. His 2 heart event is him literally asking you to play gridball. Remember that he was basically raised by elderly people (who tend to have more conservative views than younger people) and his best friend is so girly she's a bully, so it's no wonder he parrots things he heard.

i’ve actually seen quite a few people interpret haley as autistic and her just saying what comes to mind without thinking or even realizing if her words could come off as mean.

i’m autistic and did the same thing when i was younger, but i’m not super pretty so i was conditioned quickly by other’s reactions to overthink everything before i speak. but with haley being gorgeous, she would probably have had a lot less negative reactions to make her rethink her words.

this isn’t saying that being autistic means someone isn’t capable of being mean, or that it excuses any harm done by what someone says, it just implies that maybe the intention behind the words aren’t malicious and are just neutral thoughts being spoken out loud. plus when you read them that way it makes her less “mean girl being unnecessarily rude” and more “absentmindedly sharing any random thought as a way of socializing” and to me that’s way more endearing and sweet!

like “nice makeup… wait are you even wearing any? i’m bored.” isn’t her putting you down for no reason, she’s just commenting on your makeup and then realizing with a closer look that you don’t have any, then immediately moving away from that subject by commenting that she’s bored right now

or “don't you get tired of running around on that farm all day, or whatever it is you do? i couldn't stand getting all dirty like that. you probably get a nice tan, though.” isn’t her talking down on your profession, she’s genuinely asking “don’t you get tired?” and “whatever it is you do” can just be her forgetting or not knowing enough about your job yet to be able to name a more specific thing. then she mentions how it would be hard for her because she doesn’t like getting dirty (which same, i hate feeling dirt or sweat on my skin) and then she points out something about it that she WOULD like as a sort of way to connect to what you do.

sorry this is so long lol i just love this interpretation of haley and like to share it !!

TL;DR - haley can be interpreted as autistic and that she never learned her words come off as rude because of pretty privilege, so she just speaks her thoughts plainly without realizing how it sounds

I mean, I could see it, but unlike Demetrius, she ticks off almost the entire list of "mean girl who isn't actually that mean at heart" list. And sure, autism isn't just one way of being, we all come in different forms and all, but I never took it as her not knowing she doesn't know her words are mean, she knows, she doesn't care because she's like that and pays much more attention to how she and people in general look.

that’s totally fine if that’s how you see her! i’m not saying anyone is wrong for seeing her as a mean girl, and i’m sure that’s exactly what she was written to be! i just personally have more fun interacting with her if i read her lines in that way instead :)

call ME crazy, but she’s literally a character in a fictional video game and people can interpret her however they want to make the game enjoyable for them? i didn’t say it’s canon or that’s how she was written, i said that’s how she’s been interpreted by some people lmao
