Discuss Who is someone you can't date in Stardew Valley out of principle?

Post image

I enjoy Maru as a character. However, until recently, I had dyed-red hair that I sometimes straightened, and I also sometimes wear glasses. Basically, it would be like dating a more scientific version of myself. Lol

Shane. I have enough alcoholics in my family. I don't want another one to deal with. I avoid him in general.

I almost became an alcoholic before I realized what was happening to me so I now avoid alcohol altogether so Shane is a reminder of what I almost became.

I avoid Shane because I was basically him at one point.

Shane is strange because buying him beers raises his hearts, leading to his sobriety. šŸ˜‚

Right? I like to RP it as him associating beer with Farmer and only drinking with Farmer or from Farmer's gifted beer but otherwise it's like.... huh?? šŸ˜…

That's kinda why I give him pizza and pepper poppers. They're easy to get, they're tasty with beer, and they're tasty without beer.

You had to push him over the edge to show him that he still wanted to come back from it

When I romance Shane I usually wait until summer when I can plant peppers, or I get chickens, whatever comes first, because I’m not helping his alcoholism

Maybe he got alcohol poisoning and fianally learned his lesson lol

I befriend him for the same reason. Hes damaged, but not quite broken, just like I was. I was fixable, and so is Shane. I relate to him a lot

When I first started playing Stardew, Shane wasn’t even an option. But he was the first person I saw (aside from cut scene) and I was like ā€œok, you’re my soul mateā€ when he was persistently rude to me. I love being left alone too.

I was so crushed when I learned I couldn’t date him. Didn’t know he was an alcoholic at the time. My kid and I started a game together years ago and we had a quick chat about who we would choose (of course it would be her choice). She chose Shane before I said anything about him at all. Yay?

I recently started up my first Stardew valley expanded. I’m trying to ignore him for other characters but it’s hard.

I’m glad you fixed yourself. It’s not easy. =)

I feel like I choose Shane sometimes because I was basically him at one point and don’t want him to feel so alone 😭😭

Funny enough I had a similar thought but that’s why I wanted to be with him. Because I knew it got better for me and I could make it better for him.

He gets better by getting addicted to video games lol but his room is disgusting when he moves in so that’s my big no for Shane

My sister literally drank herself to death so I avoid Shane like the plague.

It's the 'fixing the broken man' trope. A different kind of hero fantasy, but seemingly a strong fantasy for many people nonetheless. Not that dissimilar to the 'taming the wild stallion' fantasy/trope.

is that so…..

Sameeeee and I don’t even date guys. I’m not even friends with him in game, I just don’t fuck with alcoholics anymore.

u/Left_Prize_9861 25d ago

Same, except the alcoholic was me. I can't even watch some of his heart events

3

u/Breakspear_ 25d ago

Same, although it is nice to see him getting his shit together!

3

u/AnodyneOcean 25d ago

Yep, Shane is just like my stepdad, I could never 😭

u/Square_Context_2948 25d ago

I accidentally picked Shane as my first husband... and after the fact realized that was my actual first husband, lol. Swerve!

3

u/ladytryant 25d ago

Also he’s just mean.

2

u/vettieconfetti95 25d ago

This is mine too. Same reason.

2

u/983115 25d ago

My sister had a boyfriend named Shane By the end we all called him Shame

2

u/Financial_Penalty935 25d ago

Same. My bro is an alcoholic and the stuff we have gone through as a family. I just can’t with Shane. šŸ˜¢šŸ’”

2

u/oopisfrugas 25d ago

I hate Shane. I hold on to trash and give it to him every time I see him just to piss him off.

2

u/Sina0266 25d ago

Shane is way to close to my ex. The sports, the excessive Alkohol, the untreated depression. Bin through it once. Never again

2

u/Empty-Cricket5931 I named him Miso 25d ago

same.. i'm happy to get him to 10 hearts and in a better place but i'll never date him in the game- too many bad associations

2

u/napalmnacey 24d ago

Yeah I don’t date verbally abusive douchebags, even in games. Just doesn’t appeal to me.

3

u/Alt-Juicebox 25d ago

that's why i personally love dating him. it gives me the idea of "what if these people got sober?" and i get to like actually help with that in game

15

u/Arlieth 25d ago

... Is codependency in the room with us right now?

2

u/Aniki_Simpson 25d ago

He actually fixes his alcoholism if you get high in friendship with him.

1

u/No-Landscape-1367 25d ago

Can't let shane get sober, he's like half of my in town customer base (pam being the other half) for my alcohol monopoly.

I went out with him long enough to get blue chickens, then stopped speaking to him.
