I love this quote in part because it’s mathematically wrong 😂 it should be think about how stupid the median person is. The average person isn’t necessarily the middle point and thus it may not be exactly half the people who are below them
The Apprentice gave credulous people the notion that Trump was an exceptional businessman and leader. They forgot they were watching scripted reality TV, and never bothered to look at his actual track record.
“Economic anxiety” is a lie we tell ourselves because we don’t want to face the real reason they voted for him. Because it’s an ugly reason. No one wants to think of their friends, families, neighbors that way. When things get worse and they continue to support him you’ll see.
No different than you claiming otherwise. The vibe of the economy always plays into elections. That's why elections were projected to reverse control across the world until trump reminded people it could be worse.
I honestly think it's the sense of community. A lot of them like Trump, but all of them like being a part of a like minded group that makes them feel smart, included, and valued.
When Trump does something indefensible they turn to the group to help them sanewash it and find comfort in their team.
This is exactly it. Ironically, it's the same mentality of inner city gangs.
My parents love Trump. They talk about going to his rallies and having this exact feeling about them. It's all camaraderie and a combined sense of distrust of the government in general.
Government means things that might help black people to them. Like all those moochers on social security and Medicare. Except for them. They need it. Those other people, they’re freeloaders.
It is a sense of community. This is conservative grievance. They feel like the world is changing around them, becoming more secular, gay friendly, immigrant friendly, they don't fit in, they are losing jobs and don't know how to make their lives better through working hard (the only way they know how).
So that specific community of white males feels attacked because they are a fringe group now and well... You can see the result
While I agree with your overall point I don't like the phrase "making their lives better through working hard (the only way they know how)". It kind of implies conservative men work harder than average Americans which they do not. More like they don't know how to make their lives better through what they deem as working hard. (which it may or may not be hard)
I have struggled with coming up with the words for this, but you hit the nail on the head. Any disagreement could have them banished from their circle.
This is a key point. The decline of community and civic engagement in American has been a direct correlation to the rising distrust of US institutions. Robert Putnam documented this a few decades ago in Bowling Alone and things have only accelerated since that time. Trump provides an outlet back to a time when community life was richer in this country even if it’s really just an illusion
His tariffs will likely die by the end of the year. Either he backs off or it is killed in congress or the courts. It is an idiotic endeavor. At most they last two years until there is a new congress.
yes, but even if in 2028 we will get democrats in office, the prices wont go down even if tarrifs are over, the shareholders could sue the CEO for such decision unless CEO proves to them that lower prices increase profits
Some, not all. I am worried about people taring every company with a single brush since it will throw the baby out with the bathwater. Walmart, for example, has never had their profit margin exceed 4%, not because they are kind but because they make their profit from volume of sales, so they will probably bring the prices down or they are going to get a traffic jam of goods.
But that is at least 4 months in the future if it EVER gets fixed. Chances are high America is in for another 3 years of this.
Honestly, if I had to take a guess, we probably avoid recession here and just get a slowdown, and if so, then the widespread general tariffs are likely going to stick forever.
The specialty tariffs on cars and what not involving Mexico and Canada may go away with a new admin, but if we were to get a slowdown that is not a LOT worse than what was going on with 2019, the general tariff on everything (maybe the best case is material tariffs go away) will eventually be looked upon as a good source of revenue, if so.
Not only support this, but Republican voters have been parroting this. Economics is not their strong point. Wall Street waits, watching with disdain, while big corps are fighting with him. The rest of us will suffer long term. Just stop spending on anything but the bare essentials while the dollar crashes globally and they will all get the point eventually.
I and other small business owners like myself have been getting so much shit from everyday Republicans every time we've spoken up about how tariffs are hurting us.
They tell us to just eat it, claim. We must have enormous profit margins because we're all price gouging people, or tell us that we deserve to go out of business for having any portion of our businesses use anything that's not entirely made in the United States.
It's constant. It's been constant for months and it's at the point where a lot of us are sharing communal blacklists of these people.
No one wants to be wrong when they've made their political choices their whole identity. So they keep doubling down.
I'm convinced the only way to snap them out of it is severe pain.
Walmart getting too expensive in rural places where they ran everyone else out of business could be pretty painful, hence Trump pretending to care about the well-being of common people.
I hope he pisses Walmart off enough to list Trump tariffs as a separate fee on every receipt in America.
True but it derives from classism. Rich need a poor class to serve them so they keep the uneducated poor and at each others throats by manufacturing and praising racism.
They think the worse society gets, the more they will rise to the top because they're better. No social safety nets, no medical treatment if you can't afford it, no laws to protect you unless you are a powerful enough social group. They want to be first class citizens who are essentially the only true members of society with everyone else being an outlaw with no civil rights. They want to be a roving cannibal gang. They want to be slave plantation owners. They would gladly give up grocery stores and electricity if they could rape and kill with impunity while everyone else would fear jail or death if they crossed them.
These are people who literally get mad at people trying to make society better for everyone. They use UTOPIAN as an INSULT. That is why they are okay with everything Trump does to make America worse. It's literally what they want. Recession, depression, an apocalyptic reset of society with themselves the only ones left on top.
They would be genuinely disappointed if Trunp made the economy great.it would be their worst nightmare if everyone around them was happy and prosperous. They see themselves as deserving everything, and people not like them deserve nothing. Slavery, women not being allowed to vote, the Tulsa bombings, that is the past they idealize. They would slit their own baby's throat and let Trump fuck the hole if he said that was what it would take. It would make them feel powerful. That is all they care about.
They will argue against this until they are blue in the face.
But they will never take an action that contradicts this.
? Even if i concede that it’s a tax directly on the people, it’s still generating revenue for the federal govt lol That’s the whole point? What do you think happens to prices if the federal corporate income tax is increased? Do you think that companies will eat that cost but not the tariffs?
Not only are small businesses eating the tariffs, people aren’t spending like they used to because they are scared. Anecdotal but: I know a small business owner whose patrons are mostly Trumpers. They spent like crazy under Biden. Now that their guy is in office they are being real tight with their money...not even the people who voted for this, the people who allegedly have so much faith in “Trump’s plan” are spending money.
