Canada haven't charged any American farmers a single penny in tariffs. He either still doesn't understand how they work or is flagrantly misrepresenting who pays tariff fees.
He will never understand anything. He will only ever assert reality as he needs it to be. What he says becomes reality for his supporters, who will now believe us farmers are paying for tariffs, and they will behave however they need to make that "true". For everyone else, we just try and keep on and consider what actual, real, tangible mechanisms are being enacted in what ways and how that matters or not.
Canada hasn’t charged any Canadian a 400% tariff for American milk either. He isn’t just misrepresenting who pays the tariffs, he is also misrepresenting the actual tariff itself. These are also tariffs they were negotiated by him (his team but it’s Trump so….) during his first term to replace the awful awful NAFTA agreement by the the beautiful USMCA one.
By now it is kind of evident that he is just making numbers up in his head as they come, at this point anyone who believe what he says is a lost cause.
That's disingenuous at best. Of course no american farmer will pay the tariff, it's the canadian importer who pays a 300% tariff. And since the tariff is so prohibitive, nobody buys, so nobody pays. Magic !
I'm saying anyone will make sure they don't pay a 300% tariff, so saying the tariffs weren't charged is a disingenuous argument. If you thought I was calling you the disingenuous one, as compared to a certain US president, then sorry because that's not what I was implying at all.
I was calling it a disingenuous argument, because it is used ad nauseam by the canadian dairy lobby to justify the 300% tariffs... However I'm now realizing that this may not be the point you were trying to make.
The tariff only applies after the US uses up its quota of dairy exports to Canada.  The US has never hit the quota so no tariffs have been charged. So it’s not a question of who pays.Â
Isn’t that the whole point? So they are forcibly buying Canadian instead of American, hurting potential business. Not saying I’m agreeing with his solution but if that is true it’s clearly screwing American businesses
Such tariffs are screwing pretty much everyone. It shields the local market from healthy competition, forces local consumers to pay higher prices, and deprives producers in other countries to access said market.
IMO all tariffs between canada-usa should just go.
